The Ballad of the Noob was suggested to us by Sarah Nichols. Because this is an old, old video, dating way back to 2006, it's fairly reasonable that many of our current readers have never seen it, which makes it an especially great recommendation.
Sure, the video isn't a snazzy as a lot of current stuff. The vocal performance, however, is absolutely fantastic. The story is simple and easy to follow. A noob is cruising Elwynn when he encounters a high-level Horde player. The Horde player makes a deal; if the noob can win a duel, the Horde player will give up all his gear.
This is the kind of high-quality storytelling we don't see enough of. Thanks to Sarah for the great reminder. Interested in the wide world of machinima? We have new movies every weekday here on WoW Moviewatch! Have suggestions for machinima we ought to feature? Toss us an email at moviewatch@wowinsider.com.
If you read the story about the video, both characters were real, about 70% of the footage on an actual server, and once she wrote the song, she got one of her friends to do the best "Johnny Cash impression" he could do.
Comments on that video, and the uploaded copies, invariably devolve into "Horde can't trade with Alliance!" and "You can't trade BOP items!"
Leading to the creator posting a note on the video "We know, it's just for humor, ok?"
She stopped doing Snacky's Journal because she got a job at an animation studio. If I remember her bio correctly, she used to work at Disney. Or she was going to go to work for Disney, can't remember which.
Ah, I remember this video (took me until he met the undead to remember it :p). I'd love to get more videos along the lines of this (hey at least there seems to be a decline in blood elf rap videos).
This is definitely a classic... probably the second WoW Machinima I ever watched. (The first being The internet is for Porn)
When are we going to be getting some of the NEWER videos featured though? It seems this column doesn't actually post much that isn't at least a year old. There are loads of new Machinimakers out there who would KILL for the exposure!
Watch "Big Blue Dress" sometime. See the comments on the video about "Holy crap that Mage does low damage! He's only critting for 2000(ish)!"
That was level 60. Before all the gear we have today.
The morons don't get it. Then I see comments like "Hacker!", or "Private server! He's flying and casting Pyroblast!" They have never encountered a Mage using Slowfall, doing PoM, jumping off something, then hitting them with a Pyroblast.
I've only watched a tiny handful of WoW machinima altogether, but I definitely remember this one... my boyfriend made me watch it within just a day or two of first starting the game.
I loved it back then, and I think it holds up to the test of time perfectly well!

I wish she'd make more videos.

Is this the same creator that is responsible for "Snackies Journal," or is it just under the same production banner?
I LOVED Snacky's journal and wish more of those would come out as well. :)

Same woman.

I remember watching this ages ago. What a great video.

Aw man, I LOVE this video. I was so excited to see it featured here.
My brother still occasionally recites it. And of course I join in where I remember the words. =D

But are they prepared to kill a LEVEL SIXTY !?
Tri Feb 18th 2011 11:23AM
Interesting.. my first ever machinima was ALSO "The internet is for porn" xD

First time seeing that video for me, and I've been watching WoW machinima since 2007. Awesome video and a great performance.
By the way, was anyone else expecting a Devil Went Down to Georgia parody based on the description here?
JungleEmber Feb 19th 2011 4:36AM
It's actually a 'Boy Named Sue' by Johnny Cash parody if my ears don't deceive me
Synchronizor Feb 19th 2011 1:57PM
No, I realize that it's not a Devil Went Down to Georgia parody, the description here just made it sound like that kind of dynamic.
Dreyja Feb 17th 2011 2:01PM
Oh I am so happy to see this one pop back up again. I love the idea of a noob pulling one over on some 'L33T player, entirely by accident.
Fun story with great executions. I have to share this one out on facebook again. :)
Thanks for including it.

I've seen this on several occasions over the years, and it' always a good watch.
What stood out to me this time was the amount of HP of the lv 60. LOL, 4k! Was that all we had back in vanilla?!
Mihn Feb 17th 2011 4:04PM
I remember when I first reached 4k on my rogue, I was ecstatic. Yes, it was a lot.

That was fantastic, I was smiling the whole time I was watching. :)
