Account-wide achievements won't be available for "quite some time"

Blizzard's developers are keenly aware of our desire for such functionality, and today on the Blizzard forums, Blizzard promised that it's something they're working on. Just don't expect it any time soon, and don't expect any additional account-wide functionality like account-wide reputations or professions. So says blue poster Wryxian:
We do like the idea of account-wide achievements and it is something we have liked for a while. However we don't currently have the tech to be able to implement them as we'd like to, and probably won't have that for quite some time.
Account-wide professions or reputations are not something that is currently on our to-do list. If we were to think about that kind of thing, we'd have to carefully consider such a change as it has potential to heavily favour those of us who enjoy playing multiple alts. People who prefer just playing one character might not really see that as fair.

Given how soon Blizzard typically means when it says "soon," we probably shouldn't be too optimistic when trying to interpret "quite some time" into real-world weeks and months. Perhaps in time for the next expansion? Perhaps something our grandchildren will be able to enjoy?

I would love this.
In terms of "Quite some time"
...
Most likely it will just be in the next MMO :(

Or they could trump the Mayans and have it come out in 2012.
Mayans: Time for the apocalypse!
Everyone: Eek!
Blizz: Account Wide Achievements!
Everyone: Woot! Wait... what were we doing... I feel it was important...
Mayans: Drat! Curse you Blizzard! And your little Gnomes too!

I would just be happy with our BOA's mailable cross-server like they said the was looking into doing a yr ago :-(
pancakes Feb 23rd 2011 8:49PM
They're still looking into it. Looking is a very strenuous process.
Baba Feb 24th 2011 5:07AM
Tbh Blizzard could fulfil this in a very crude way right now. Simply arrange it so that the completion of an achievement mails a BoA item to the character that achieved it. Then you can mail this item around your alts, and when they right-click it it'll grant them that achievement (rewarding another of the same achievement item in the mail for the next alt, etc etc.)
If they didn't want this for every achievement, they could simply do it for ones that reward a mount.
yujie.max Feb 23rd 2011 7:10PM
Oh, finally!
Past the achievement and their corresponding points, does that mean any achievement rewards will be awarded to all characters in the account?
Like, you know, Violet Proto-Drake? :D
MusedMoose Feb 23rd 2011 9:03PM
Man, I hope so. Major kudos to those who've managed to do "Long, Strange Trip" on multiple characters; I just finished it with one and wouldn't care to have to do all of it again.
...but having that darn nifty proto-drake on all my alts, someday, would be very nifty. ^_^
Robert Feb 23rd 2011 7:13PM
I don't see how this wouldn't be fair to people that only like to play one character.
Tim Feb 23rd 2011 7:29PM
exactly if they only play 1 character they already have account wide achievements what do they care? That comment makes no sense to me.
wutsconflag Feb 23rd 2011 7:36PM
The comment you are referring to was referring to account wide professions/reputations - something that would heavily favor a player who plays multiple characters (and can therefore have access to all professions) over someone who plays a single character (and will therefore only have two).
It wasn't in regards to achievements, from what I understand.
Jehosaphat Feb 23rd 2011 7:40PM
That bit was in regard to account-wide professions.
Jebediah54 Feb 23rd 2011 7:45PM
Imagine if you have someone with 5 level 85s looking to get exalted with Baradin's Wardens. That person would be able to do all of the dailies 5 times, and thus get 5 times the rep that someone with only one character at 85 would get.
Dboy Feb 23rd 2011 8:06PM
@Jebediah54
And put in 5 times the work.
The easiest fix to this is to say that reputation status (Friendly, Honoured, etc) is account-wide, whereas the degree within each status (1200/21000) is character based.
Any change to a character's reputation status will automatically change all other characters' reputation status with that faction (for better or worse, so people can't cheat themselves into 'The Insane' title).
Jack Mynock Feb 23rd 2011 8:42PM
@Dboy
Unless I'm misunderstanding Jebediah's scenario, you'd be getting 5x rep gains per character. So, you'd actually be getting 25x rep gains for 5x the work.
N-train Feb 23rd 2011 8:46PM
@Dboy-
But that strikes to the heart of the issue the Blue Poster was actually addressing, a system that favors those with multiple alts. I have one 85, so if there are 5 TB dailies that each give me 200 rep (just throwing out numbers), the maximum rep I can possibly achieve in one day is 1000 (tabards aside). With someone with 3 85s (in your system), they could gain 3000 rep, putting themselves far ahead of me for no other reason then they had some alts.
He can get to exalted 3 times as quickly as me, and on three different characters at once? How is that fair?
The fact that there is a set number of dailies is there to prevent exactly the above. Tabards aside, the cap on daily quests and on faction-specific quests are there to ensure that those without many hours to play per day can actually compete with those who have a lot of time to burn.
That, and you'd have to adjust your reputation numbers, because someone getting 3000 rep per day (assuming they start at honored, tabards aside) can make it to exalted (with three characters, no less) in 11 days, whereas it would take the guy with 1 85 over a month.
Dboy Feb 23rd 2011 9:06PM
@Jack
I think your maths is a little out there, mate.
1 character * 5 dailies = approx 1250 rep;
3 characters * 5 dailies each (15) = approx 3750 rep
Therefore each character gives one additional set of daily reputation, as N-train has stated.
@N-train
I understand the premise here, but I don't think you read/understood my solution regarding reputation status changes vs reputation degree/fraction changes. Have a look through it again and tell me what you think :)
Tim Feb 23rd 2011 9:10PM
so make the dailies account wide as well therefor you can only do the dailies once a day per account of coarse this is ONLY if they have account based reps. But if someone is willing to put in more work than you and level up multiple characters and do the dailies multiple times how is it cheating you any? You can either do the same or go at a slower pace no harm no foul.
I cant do heroics but I can do the daily regular and Im good with having a shot albeit at a slower pace at the same gear as people who can get items in 1 day, they put in more time they deserve faster rewards
gewalt Feb 23rd 2011 11:30PM
youre all completely missing the obvious solution. make all rep dailies account wide.
as in, you can only do the daily once per day per account.
there, no double rep problems anymore.
wow, that was hard.
Jebediah54 Feb 24th 2011 12:09AM
It seems as though my post might have been misunderstood. What I was trying to say was that a person that has 5 characters that share rep, they'd be able to get all 5 characters to exalted much faster than someone that just runs those dailies once per day, and thus get all the epics from them in 1/5 of the days. I don't mean that someone that puts in more work shouldn't get rewarded for it, I'm just saying that it wouldn't be right for Blizz to make it seem like you have to have multiple 85s to be competitive at progression (although, at this point, there's been ample time to get to exalted with Baradin's Wardens).
However, as Tim said, they could fix that advantage with account-wide dailies, but at that point they'd be cutting off a significant portion of income for the player base.
Xayíde Feb 24th 2011 7:44AM
@gewalt
And you are not seeing the obvious problem to your obvious solution: Some dailies, TB included, award more than just rep. Would you miss out on tokens to gear up your alts? What about money?
wow that was clever
Moving on:
DBoy's got it I think.
