can someone explain to why green quality gems are still vendoring for nearly twice as much as blue quality gems?

My best guess is that due to green gems being used to make blue gems (via transmuting), this vendor cost (9g for a cut green gem) is in place to give them a minimum value, which in turn prevents the market being flooded by cheap transmuted blue gems. Blue gems don't need this as they have higher value due to both the increased rarity (from prospecting) and the inherent value given to them in terms of transmute mats.

That's a nice theory, which I wish I could believe, but I'm almost certain it's been a massive glaring typo in the code that nobody at Blizzard noticed because the AH is such an afterthought for them.

basil, that's a crazy typo if that indeed is the case. Also, vendor prices are set for each item, it's not like there is a batch price set for all green quality cut gems. They would have to make 6 individual typos for that to happen. Also, wrath-era cut blue quality gems vendor for more than cataclysm-era blue gems. I can't imagine that being a typo either. Cutting and vendoring gems is a way to get gems off the market and for enterprising JC's to make a bit of gold with some time invested. It's really no different than ore that is priced below the cost of vendoring a bar, although the JC vendoring tends to be more profitable.More importantly than a floor for green gems, this puts a floor under ore, which I think is blizzard's main goal. They want ore farmers to be rewarded, and there is little chance of ore farmers selling, say, elementium ore below 18 silver while prospecting gems is so profitable. You might laugh at such a small price for ore, but if it gets farmed to death like saronite, it could easily drop that low if it were not for other professions getting a guaranteed profit at certain benchmark levels for the ore.p.s. incoming elementium shuffle

Pure and simple... JEWELCRAFTER DAILIES...I'll bet you bottom-dollar that the Nightstones, Zephyr's & Jaspers are selling for crazy prices, because those three green gems are needed for the JC dailies, 3 of each, almost every damn day, by every JC worth his salt on every server. There's a lot of JCs out there who don't prospect their own gems for the dailies and they'll buy them off AH... throw in supply-demand mechanics and those three green gems are easily some of the most expensive raw gems outside the inferno ruby that you'll see posted on the AH.
