The OverAchiever: The Oceanographer

I could almost hate fishing, and I suspect most players do. It's a fairly passive activity that requires your attention in 20-second bursts, playing havoc with your ability to tab out and write articles/watch Chuck/throw foil balls for the cat. Blizzard made some noise a while back about changing the profession to be more like its incarnation in games like Animal Crossing, but nothing really big has happened in Cataclysm. I can only assume that Blizzard hasn't come to a decision on what it wants to do. In the meantime, it seems content to torture us as much as possible with the profession's existing mechanics.
Case in point: The Oceanographer and The Limnologist, two achievements introduced in Cataclysm that, while not part of the "Salty" meta, are a siren call to masochistic fishermen everywhere. Today we're going to tackle The Oceanographer, which will keep you in coastal areas for the most part.

Most of the fish that you'll need to catch for The Oceanographer are not terribly rare, but there's one fish that promises to reacquaint you with the term "screaming nightmare." There are also two seasonal fish here, but this is less a problem than you might think.
Beginning the search
The Oceanographer requires significant travel time, but you can save yourself a lot of work by condensing the catches you'll need to make into the fewest zones possible. I've organized all 33 fish by what I feel is the most efficient way to get this achievement done with the least amount of digital shoe leather wastage.
If you're any kind of fisherman at all, you're probably not starting this achievement from scratch, but if you are --
- Fly to the Cape of Stranglethorn and park yourself on Jaguero Island. While here, you can catch the Big-Mouth Clam, the Raw Rockscale Cod, the Raw Glossy Mightfish, and the Raw Spotted Yellowtail. After you catch these, fly north to run alongside the Cape itself until you find pools of Firefin Snapper and Oily Blackmouth. It might be necessary to run along the western edge of the coast in order to find both or to fish out other pools until the one you need spawns. However, both are fairly common pools in old Azeroth, so if your luck is poor, just make a mental note to pick up a pool elsewhere.
- Fly north to Northern Stranglethorn. Strictly speaking, this isn't really necessary as you can easily pick up the Raw Rainbow Fin Albacore in lots of other zones, but eh -- it's a pretty minor detour from the Cape.
- Fly north to Westfall. This is another minor detour that's not hugely necessary to make, but Westfall's close, and you can pick up the Raw Slitherskin Mackerel off the coast.
- Fly southeast until you reach the coast of the Blasted Lands. While here, fish up the Darkclaw Lobster, the Large Raw Mightfish, the Raw Summer Bass/Winter Squid (see note below), and the Stonescale Eel. After you've got these, head for the river in the Tainted Forest for the Raw Sunscale Salmon (please note that this can only be caught between noon and 6 p.m. server time), the Raw Whitescale Salmon, and the Bloated Salmon (see note below). What these three fish are doing in the same waters you'll be fishing up the Raw Nightfin Snapper for The Limnologist, I have no idea, but just take the gift and run.
The Raw Summer Bass and Winter Squid are seasonal fish, but for a good half of the year (and happily for us, in a stretch that's approaching as I write this), you can catch both at the same time. Neither is rare while available:
- December through February Winter Squid only
- March through May Both
- June through August Raw Summer Bass only
- September through November Both
Sorry, folks; this is the achievement's biggest hurdle. The Bloated Salmon's drop rate is, for lack of a better word, miserable. You'll see it estimated at <1% on most data sites, but what that really means is that it's probably a 1 in 1,000 catch at best. The one benefit of fishing for it in the Tainted Forest is that you'll also have a shot at the 29 Pound Salmon if you, like me, are still arse out of luck on One That Didn't Get Away.
Resigned yourself to the long slog? Let's assume for the moment that you're the luckiest bastard in existence and you nailed a Bloated Salmon on your first try. Assuming you've kept up with the guide so far, we've knocked 16 of the 33 fish off the list in four zones with minimum travel time. At this point, we're going to make a quick trip up north to get one more:
- Fly north to the Badlands. While here, fish up the Raw Redgill. You may actually be able to catch this in the same channel where you caught the two Salmon in the Blasted Lands, but I haven't personally confirmed this.
- Backtrack to the Blasted Lands. Once you're back, head for the portal to Outland and then take a taxi or fly to Shattrath.
- Head for the Isle of Quel'Danas. Fish up the Giant Sunfish, the Bloated Giant Sunfish, and the Jaggal Clam. Afterwards, I would recommend hearthing to wherever you're headquartered in old Azeroth. Assuming you've previously unlocked it, you can do the Know Your Ley Lines daily in order to get a free teleport back to Shattrath, but that probably won't do you any good with the removal of portals from the city.
- Vashj'ir This one's a bit interesting in that the Abyssal Clam has to be looted rather than fished. if you've leveled in Vashj'ir at all, you've almost certainly gotten a million of these already, but if you haven't, a quick swim around the Shimmering Expanse and a few kills should net you one. Again, any time spent leveling here previously almost certainly means you won't have to make another trip out here because the Clam is such a common drop.
- Twilight Highlands It's generally most convenient to catch the Murglesnout, Algaefin Rockfish, and the Deepsea Sagefish all in one session along the coast here.
- Tol Barad While you can catch the Fathom Eel along the coast in Uldum as well (and you'll need to if you're not 85 yet and can't go to Tol Barad), it's almost always faster just to port to TB and fish an eel up from one of the many pools there.
- Darkshore Catch the Darkshore Grouper along the coast here.
You should be able to knock off all the fish here quite easily in just two zones. Moving west to east:
- Borean Tundra The Imperial Manta Ray, the Borean Man O' War, and the Darkwater Clam can all be caught here. The first two can be caught in their own pools if you want, but the Clam is an open water catch. You'll almost certainly nab a Pygmy Suckerfish if you hit a school. Odds are pretty decent that you'll also grab a Moonglow Cuttlefish while you're here, but if you don't, you can just catch one in the Frozen Sea.
- The Frozen Sea If you don't remember where this is, you'll find it along the southern coast of Northrend. If you're looking for a particular spot, my own personal favorite is the Titan ruins off the coast of Dragonblight. Fish up the Deep Sea Monsterbelly, the Rockfin Grouper, and -- if you didn't get one randomly in the Borean Tundra -- a Moonglow Cuttlefish. You can find both Monsterbelly and Cuttlefish schools in The Frozen Sea if you want, but otherwise, all three fish can also be nabbed from open water.

I'm sure you wrote this article before the patch 4.1 stuff, but as data-mined by MMO-Champion very recently both the Oceanographer and the Limnologist have thankfully been slightly nerfed.
For example, the Bloated Salmon is NOT required for the Oceanographer in patch 4.1 (Of course that would happen as soon as you decide to write an article about it :P).
jealouspirate Feb 24th 2011 6:08PM
In case I wasn't clear, these nerfs in 4.1 are absolutely a positive change. Some of those Bloated Fish like the salmon are, as you said, a complete nightmare. It certainly made no sense to have a list of 32 relatively common catches with 1 painfully rare one.

This isn't the first time in recent memory that Blizzard has basically made bits from the OverAchiever irrelevant between writing and publishing. I think they're out to get Allison.
Cephas Feb 24th 2011 7:22PM
Frankly, it was a dumb idea to ever require the bloated fish. The idea is that as a limnologist or oceanographer your goal is to collect a specimen of every species of fish. You shouldn't care if the dumb fish is bloated or not. It's a welcome change from Blizzard and it's just unfortunate that the announcement made this article outdated before it even got published.
lilfoot Feb 24th 2011 6:06PM
According to MMO-champion, this achievement will only require 31 fish instead of 33 in Patch 4.1. No more agonizing hours trying to catch bloated fish!
LynMars Feb 24th 2011 6:17PM
I did this one about a week ago, only missing the summer bass and the bloated fish; i should get the achievement instantly on login when the patch drops.
Limnologist might still take a bit of work as that requires multiple bloated fish...
One thing, thankfully, is that many zones share fish, so there's not as much travel as it might seem to get most of these.
Solitha Feb 25th 2011 3:32AM
3 of the 5 bloated fish for The Limnologist are slated for removal in 4.1 as well, leaving only the Bloated Trout and the Bloated Smallfish.
uttermoonman Feb 24th 2011 6:32PM
What we need are more debris fields to fish in with epic drops. Only then will you see Fishing become a worthwhile profession.
As for now, gold spammers are the only thing in this game that's worse than fishing!!!
Eberron Feb 24th 2011 7:14PM
Naw, you can get addons/scripts that won't cost your account to solve most of the gold spammer problems. XD
wutsconflag Feb 24th 2011 7:45PM
The problem is, the moment you add in the ability to get epic drops from fishing, you open up the can of worms that Archaeology did. (Go read the official professions forums if you're unfamiliar with what I'm talking about. They are absolutely chock full of people complaining that their grind has given them whatever item they feel they should have had ages ago, how it's ruined the game, and how they're quitting because of it.)
No, I think fishing is fine the way it is. I don't need epics. Just give me a beer, and some time fishing, and I can be happy.
Arbolamante Feb 24th 2011 11:55PM
No, they put in archaeology to make fishing seem fast-paced!
Martinvb Feb 24th 2011 6:39PM
The salmon are found in a limnologist zone because salmon are anadromous -- they spawn in fresh water but spend most of their lives in salt water.
Rajah Feb 24th 2011 11:12PM
Likely I'll get downvoted for saying this, but I'm disappointed that these achievements are being nerfed so radically in patch 4.1. Removing the rare bloated fish from the requirements changes the character of these achievements completely. As things stand right now, these achievements can be earned only by those with a combination of incredible patience and/or luck. This is precisely what WoW Fishing is all about, patience and luck. These achievements will change from something that only those most dedicated to Fishing will earn to something any casual fisherman/woman can knock out with an hour or so of effort.
Yes, I've already completed all of The Limnologist and The Oceanographer except for the Summer Bass. Based on my observations and those I've seen posted at El's Anglin', I think the actual drop rates for Bloated Salmon and Bloated Redgill are probably between about 1/2,000 and 1/5,000. The other rare bloated fish currently required for The Limnologist are likely on the order of 1/1,000. I'd be less disappointed if they had increased the drop rates for Bloated Salmon and Bloated Redgill to be closer to those of the other bloated fish, about 0.1%, but left all the bloated fish as requirements for these achievements. That would at least require some effort and not let people completely cheese it.
frozndevl Feb 24th 2011 11:19PM
I have to agree, as someone that is slowly working on the bloated fish as well. Some achieves should stay difficult. What they should change is remove the necessary win of the Fishing tournaments from the Salty title, allowing only 104 ppl per year to potentially get the title on a server kind of sucks.
Seaborn Feb 25th 2011 2:58AM
I'm with you on being a little disappointed. Some things need to be extremely rare but something that a person can do on their own. I felt like I achieved something when I got the Salty title. I have since taken several friends to the Sunday derby to show/help them win.
That said I also think epics should come from certain kinds of pools. The turtle mount is something that I have been trying to get since it went live. I stopped counting at 15,000 fish and that was long before cata patch. Real long time before actually. Yet I still am trying since it drops in the Cata zones too. I must admit that fishing has brought me some extremely valuable drops from crates etc. I think the best so far was the tailoring pattern for the purple shirt. Sold it for 5k back when that was an insane amount of gold.
I would love to see another Salty type title know that they are nerfing the other two.
Damn that turtle!!!!!!!!
threesixteen Feb 25th 2011 1:01PM
@rajah.
^^
this is essentially the key complaint for all of WoW. Players that actually tried and succeeded in acquiring/completeing super difficult/challenging tasks then see that months later, they're efforts are rendered meaningless when the nerfs kick in to give all the whiners a chance to have the same achievements with little of the same sweat/tears. Really is a wrong-headed way to go about things.
Obviously i would love to have every cool thing in the game; but what's the point in an "everything for everyone" paradigm? We don't cater to layabouts in life, we don't coddle the weak in competitions, why should we do it in WoW?
And for those that say something is "too hard"; if one person has achieved something, it's not too hard. It's you that isn't working hard enough.
BB Crisp Feb 25th 2011 1:01PM
I have to say, I really don't want them to reduce the difficulty of fishing achievements and I would hate for them to remove requirements for the "Salty" title as frozndevl suggests. I worked long, long, long and hard on most every fishing achievement I've gotten and I always wear my "Salty" title with the utmost pride. It represents the greatest amount of time that I've ever dedicated to a single title.
It also makes me nervous when I see people talking about how Blizzard needs to "fix" fishing. From every developer post I've ever read, fishing is functioning exactly as intended. It isn't supposed to be exciting. It's supposed to be fishing. Nat Pagle says it best:
"If you ask me, the best part about fishing is its slow pace. It gives one time to think, to reflect on past events and to plan for future ones. Oh, and it's also a great excuse to drink. Heavily."
John Feb 24th 2011 11:35PM
you'd think that when the NORTHERN part of the globe is in Winter, the SOUTHERN hemisphere would be Summer.
Saeadame Feb 25th 2011 3:45AM
That would be kinda cool.
The Wanderer Feb 25th 2011 7:49PM
What makes you think it isn't? I don't remember ever seeing a globe of Azeroth depicting the continents we know; isn't it possible that the entire Azeroth-bound game we've seen so far (aside from the "single huge continent in the distant past", maybe) is set entirely in the northern hemisphere?
It would certainly seem to explain the hot climates (jungles, deserts) in the south and the colder ones (at least Winterspring... plus of course Northrend) in the north, if nothing else.
