Patch 4.1 PTR: Hints of a new Hallow's End

The Forsaken have already carpet bombed Southshore with plague, so their annual ritual of tossing innocuous stinkbombs into town probably isn't going to have much of an impact anymore. We aren't sure how Blizzard is planning to update Hallow's End for Cataclysm yet, but the patch 4.1 data has some hints as to what we can expect this year -- at least the fun and games portion, if not the lore.
Mixed in with the latest additions to Wowhead's database are new versions of the Hallow's End masks. Rather than replacing your helm slot, it appears that the masks now go over your helm slot -- meaning your human female can wear her tauren male mask while raiding Blackwing Descent without losing the stats on her epic helm. As an added bonus, it appears the masks that aren't player races also supply a stat buff of their own. The Naga Masks, for example, are consumed on use and provide an intellect buff.
Hallow's End rewards are also likely moving over to a currency system, with the addition of Candy Coins. The aforementioned masks will likely be some of the items you can buy with these coins, but we haven't seen much beyond that.
Finally, and this one is a long shot, two very interesting spells have appeared in the data files: Greymane's Resolve and Decree of the Dark Lady, for the Alliance and the Horde, respectively. These spells, which scale with level, are buffs that replace elixirs or flasks for their duration. Either we have a worgen/Forsaken event in our future independent of Hallow's End (which we may speculate on at a later date), or the new story of Hallow's End will focus on a clash between the worgen and the Forsaken.
World of Warcraft: Cataclysm has destroyed Azeroth as we know it; nothing is the same! In WoW Insider's Guide to Cataclysm, you can find out everything you need to know about WoW's third expansion, from leveling up a new goblin or worgen to breaking news and strategies on endgame play.

I KNEW this would happen. the reigns dropped so often last year I figured they were completely redoing the holiday for the next year. possibly a new mount too? maybe a death camel
Starsmore Feb 26th 2011 6:47PM
And by so often, you mean absolutely never. Again.
Deathmoose Feb 26th 2011 7:02PM
hopefully a deathmoose

They only dropped "so often" for everyone else. I remember last year a group I was in got 3 mounts in the one run. I got an empty bag.
Mr. Tastix Feb 26th 2011 8:50PM
Why do people keep saying the mounts dropped often? The mounts drop rate never changed, it's been 1% for the past few years. Those who got it were -lucky-, that's it.
I wasn't lucky. :(

Damn, they dropped a lot last year? I didn't do anything for the holiday because I was knee-deep in grad school apps. :l

Aymuhdroowud Feb 26th 2011 3:06PM
Could be a buff you get while fighting or after defeating the Horseman.
Vani Feb 26th 2011 3:10PM
This would definitally flesh out what is essentially an outdated Holiday.
Worgen storyline progression FTW
Sunaseni Feb 26th 2011 3:10PM
Zombies versus werewolves on Halloween. Fitting.

"Candy Coin"?
And there I was just the other day thinking "You know, not enough holidays require you to grind some specific currency."
Drakkenfyre Feb 26th 2011 3:20PM
Thinking the same thing.
Great. now to get everything you could get before freely, you are going to have to get shitloads of coins.
I am going to be pissed if they take the random items in candy bags, and stick them on a vendor, and it ends up being like the Fire Festival or Brewfest, where you have to do the dailies every damn day or you can't get everything, or in the case of Brewfest, not even everything.

Heh, beats the hell out of the old system. Before the stupid love tokens, once an hour you could go up to guard, flirt with him/her, and you'd get a box that MIGHT contain what you need to complete the event. Don't want to wait an hour? you can flirt with up to 15 people to get another box, provided none of them turned you down, breaking your heart rendering unable to do jack until someone shared a friendship bracelet, which if memory serves was also a largely random thing.
The RNG was so bad blizzard had to nerf the candied heart achievement so you only needed a handful of the candied hearts (which yes, were random drops from a bag that was a random drop from a box)
I wear, you kids today with your holiday currency and your lfg holiday bosses don't know how good you got it...

"Great. now to get everything you could get before freely, you are going to have to get shitloads of coins."
It's not any different. You work towards something incrementally instead of farming for drops. Items you get from coins are just as "free" as items you got from drops.
