Speculation: The War of the Ancients' connection to Patch 4.1's legendary staff

The War of the Ancients was the time when the Dragon Soul, and subsequently the Demon Soul, was forged by Neltharion (now Deathwing) and used as an ultimate weapon against the Burning Legion, the night elves, and the dragonflights all at once. The Dragon Soul held the power of the four flights and, potentially, the ability to hurt Deathwing himself. At the time of the War of the Ancients, Malygos, Ysera, and Nozdormu were all incredibly powerful aspects.
Three of the staff's stages mention two specific states -- the Arcane Orb and the Branch. Also, coincidentally, an item called the Timeless Eye has emerged from the datamined information. Each of these pieces relates in some way to Malygos, Ysera, and Nozdormu, respectively. The Arcane Orb is obviously tied to Malygos in some way (and, potentially, the new event at Coldarra featuring a new blue dragon), because he is the aspect of the arcane. The Branch, reminiscent of the world trees, could be linked to Ysera. The Timeless Eye is linked to Nozdormu, not only because of the time aspect, but his eyes are quite literally gemstones. In addition, the markings on the staff's base on the fabric are draconic runes, which could very easily be linked to the War of the Ancients and the greatest time of the dragons. These runes are also all over the Nexus.
All of these pieces lead to the potential conclusion that the new legendary staff is a combination of three of the four aspects' power that was also part of the Dragon/Demon Soul. Alexstrasza's influence could come from using the fire of the Red Dragonflight to forge the staff or potentially in some new piece that was stolen by Ragnaros or whatnot. Suffice to say, a lot of this speculation leads us to believe that War of the Ancients will be sooner than later, especially with this new information and speculation.

I'm hoping some creative use of Mind Control will - before it gets hotfixed - allow for the killing of Broxigar.
Lucasman Feb 28th 2011 3:20PM
Rhonin yes, Brox....no.
Fletcher Feb 28th 2011 3:24PM
*I'm* hoping that none of Knaak's characters appear in the War of the Ancients raid at all.
Nopunin10did Feb 28th 2011 3:30PM
I'm still hoping we get sent back in time to undo ALL the Knaak characters and ensure their version of events is no longer part of Warcraft canon.

"except for Smourne"
Am I the only one that thought that it was time to start roasting marsh mellows in the cold of Northrend for this Legendary treat?
Anathemys Feb 28th 2011 6:15PM
I'm hoping for at least fifteen Back to the Future references.
MusedMoose Feb 28th 2011 7:34PM
Y'know what I'm hoping for? I'm hoping that the War of the Ancients raid reveals that the dragon who sent Rhonin & Friends back in time was actually... wait for it... one of the Infinite Dragonflight in disguise. So that the entire purpose of the raid is to fix the dual timeline that Rhonin caused and make it so that it never happened. No more confusion, no more orc taking out Sargeras by hitting his toe with a piece of wood, and no more mage with a raptor army.
I would raid my ass off to do this if it turned out that way.

@Moose: That is totally my personal canon now. I salute you.

@Moose
Congratulations, you have just fixed the headache I've had ever since I read that book. Thank you, thank you, THANK YOU!
Seriously though, that book gave me SEVERAL headaches. And then a headache over how many headaches I had. And then it just all fell apart...

Why is it necessary for every caster epic to be assembled?
Jack Spicer Feb 28th 2011 3:21PM
*Legendary*
loop_not_defined Feb 28th 2011 3:30PM
If you don't count Burning Crusade, which Legendary hasn't had "Some Assembly Required"?
Nina Katarina Feb 28th 2011 3:31PM
Val'anyr was assembled, Shadowmourne was assembled. I think that Blizz likes the assembly mechanism to make obtaining the epic more of an effort and less of a 'pray to the goddess of RNG'.
Shoggoth Feb 28th 2011 3:31PM
Only the BC legendaries were drops. The other five have been crafted.
So there's a pretty decent precedent for crafting any legendary, not just the caster ones.
J. Feb 28th 2011 3:32PM
As opposed to collecting the parts for Thunderfury, the Hand of Rag, or Shadow's Edge before it becomes Shadowmourne?
Fletcher Feb 28th 2011 3:33PM
Back in BC legendaries just dropped, and it sucked; it rewarded luck rather than effort. The assemblage method means that persistence, skill, and teamwork is rewarded, rather than rewarding having Illidan on farm.
Jason Feb 28th 2011 3:33PM
With the exception of the Warglaives & the bow from Sunwell Plateau every Legendary has required assembly.
Nopunin10did Feb 28th 2011 3:34PM
It's a way to even out the amount of work a raid does to create it. If it was just dropped, intact, then some raids would be lucky enough to get it on their first try, while others would farm for a year and see nothing.
By making it an assembly process, you guarantee that any guild that creates it has dedicated a significant amount of time to do so.

What's the "legend" in a legendary if there is no quest to forge it? The best of weapons are not just stock, they are hand crafted and through quests like World of Warcraft has create an experience for the player thus "Legend".
Scooter Feb 28th 2011 3:46PM
Easy, it's to make it exclusive. Combined I'd bet there's been less than 15,000 occurrences of completed legendary items.
Personally I hope they make this one easier to obtain than the other legendary weapons or at least include an epic quest chain behind it with rewards like Shadowmourne. I don't know about you but as a caster I was pissed to not be able to do the quest line when there was so much awesome loot to be had.
