It has been my understanding (and I thought Blizz put out blue posts about this) that 1-80 Heirloom gear stops giving XP bonus at 80.000, not 80.999, hence they would NOT help you lvl to 81.

Its possible i'm mistaken, but I could've sworn I read a blue post stating Heirloom gear ceases giving XP bonuses the minute you hit 80, and doesn't give you one point more of XP on your way to 81.
