Spiritual Guidance: Revisiting the hybrid tax

When I first sat down to write, I had decided my column this week was going to be all about patch 4.1.0 and the PTR. Once I started looking through all the priest class changes, though ... well, there's not much there. That's not to say there aren't any changes. There are some tweaks to Power Word: Shield (which I do use all the time), and Inner Fire no longer has a duration (which is great). It's just that there are no changes to our damage-dealing spells in the mix.
Perhaps that's a good thing. Our boomkin friends are getting a pretty ugly-looking nerf to Starsurge in patch 4.1.0, which surprised me a little bit. Admittedly, I'm no expert on balance druids, but from what I've seen on the DPS meters, their damage didn't seem stratospheric. In fact, I usually see boomkins trailing shadow priests across the board.
The whole thing got me thinking. Why are boomkins being nerfed if they're not topping the meters? Is it a "hybrid tax" thing? Does the hybrid tax even still exist in Cataclysm? And what does it all mean for shadow priests in a post-4.1.0 world?
Revisiting the hybrid tax
One of my first articles here at WoW Insider was about the hybrid tax. For those unfamiliar with what the hybrid tax is, it's a pretty simple (institutionalized) concept that says pure DPS classes should do more damage than hybrid DPS classes. As the logic goes, a shadow priest can stop DPSing, change specs and heal; a warlock or mage can't. Because shadow priests have more utility (or so the theory goes), shadow priests should do less damage.
How much less? In January 2010, right after ICC was released, shadow priests paid a hybrid tax of 6.29%. That is, when compared to mages, warlocks, and hunters, a hybrid DPS spec like a shadow priest should do 6.29% less damage.
It's a simple concept, but it's a terribly controversial one. A hybrid tax is, at its base, a utility tax. We're "punished" for having utility (read: a healing off spec) that warlocks and hunters don't. Shadow priests suffer it, boomkin suffer it, elemental shaman suffer it. We can argue all day long that shadow priests almost never wind up healing, but that's irrelevant. The hybrid tax is just a way of life. Right?
Maybe -- but then again, maybe not. Given that a major theme in Cataclysm has been the homogenization of the classes, is there really a significant utility gap anymore? And beyond that ... what's the current value of the hybrid tax? Does it even still exist?
SimulationCrafting the hybrid tax
All throughout February, I've been talking about the SimulationCraft program. It's nothing new -- it's been the theorycrafting standard for shadow priests for the last few years.
But it's not just for shadow priests. SimulationCraft can model any class and spec World of Warcraft has to offer. It's terrific for making gearing decisions. It's also a natural tool for finding out exactly where we stand in comparison to other classes:

More important than the raw numbers are the relative numbers: Shadow priests are, at least in theory, the strongest of the hybrid DPS classes. (Take that, Tyler Caraway.) We're still performing behind most of the pure damage classes. Especially hunters. The big, stupid jerks.
If we combine and take the average of all the pure DPS specs, we get 27,505 damage per second -- slightly higher than our 27,226. That's a mere 1.0% difference. If we limit our calculations to only the top performing of the pure DPS specs, the hybrid tax increases to 4.3%.
So, you know that underpowered Renew that you never wind up using? It's costing you a little over 1,000 points of damage per second, on average. In theory.
Reality versus theorycrafting: StateofDPS.com
There's a major drawback to theorycrafting: The numbers you get in the lab are often different from the numbers you get in the real world. The site stateofdps.com, which pulls data from the top performers at World of Logs, shows something of a different picture over the last few days:

Obviously, that throws a bit of a wrench in our hybrid tax calculations. It's hard to calculate what doesn't exist.
So, wait, is there a hybrid tax or not?
The final judgment as to whether or not the hybrid tax exists in Cataclysm is still up for debate, of course, and we could see some major changes coming with patch 4.1.0. For now, though, we have to deal with reality, and that reality (at least for me) is this: Shadow priests are one of the strongest DPS specs out there right now. It's not an easy spec to master, but once you do, it's an incredibly powerful one.
That's not to say that the hybrid tax can't and won't make a comeback. Warlocks are slated for a flat DPS buff in patch 4.1.0, which should bump their DPS nicely. And, as we already stated, boomkin are in for a DPS nerf -- a spec that's already underperforming shadow priests by just about every metric. Patch 4.1.0 could just as easily contain more buffs for pure DPS classes and more nerfs for hybrid classes.
So are shadow priests in for nerfs in patch 4.1.0? It's clearly too early to tell, but it really depends on Blizzard's core class design philosophy. Are classes really balanced around best-of-the-best DPS -- that is, around progression raiding? Or are classes balanced around a more typical DPS player, a philosophy that wants to find a middle ground between the hard-to-master shadow priest spec and an easier-to-play boomkin spec?
We'll know the answers in the next couple of weeks, as more players participate in the patch 4.1.0 PTR. My gut feeling, though? Minor nerfs for shadow priests are likely still on the way.

I find it odd to describe Mind Blast as a "main nuke." Your main nuke is the button you hit most, your equivalent to a Fire Mage's Fireball or Elemental's Lightning Bolt. Pretty sure for a Shadow Priest that'd be Mind Flay.
Of course, with all the dot damage y'all fling around, you should expect your nukes to do a bit less than, say, an Arcane Mage who is dot free.

Moonkin base damage is most likely lower. Thus they scale faster, while your priest gets more bang per buck off a point of int most likely.
(Spells scaling is better on Priest, While Stat is better on Moonkin)
100% Guess, but would make sense

With the recent buffs to mind blast, you *should,* in theory, be getting more bang for you buck in each Mind Blast. The numbers on the higher end you're describing are most likely your 3x stacked shadow orb and/or Dark Archangel MBs. Recent changes to mastery have inflated MB numbers if you have the mastery to go with it, but if you were avoiding it pre-4.0.6 (as you should have, since it was broken) and added any morepoints into that stat you wouldn't see much of a difference.
Also, if you find you're not getting 3x (or even 2x) shadow orbs before your MB is off CD, you can take out talent points in improved MB to put somewhere else that may give you more utility. Ultimately, you want to be casting MB with full shadow orb procs, but casting it on every CD should still give significant dps.

...and HAVE NOT* added any more points into that stat you wouldn't see much of a difference.

You know, I think being hybrid is tax enough in itself. If you can tank/dps/heal and you're in a progression guild, then you are expected to be specced and geared and ready to swap mid raid if needed. So I may start out as boomkin and then be called upon to heal. That means I normally can't have a PVE spec and a PVP spec so I do PVP in a PVE spec and don't perform as well as those with pure PVP specs. That's our tax, why make us perform less well in our PVE spec also?

Because you have options that I, as a Hunter or Warlock, do not. I either DPS or ... I DPS. (And before you say something like "Well, you should have rolled some other class." think carefully. Do you really want more competition on your gear?)
Roan Mar 2nd 2011 1:41PM
Fox, your graphs are not even close to correct. Don't post stuff you don't understand at all.
Balance Druids at the bottom in full 372? What are they itemizing for Spirit or something?
Haste-stacked full 372 balance druids are above and beyond all other DPS. Shadow Priests are right behind them.
How do I know?
Because I'm a full 372 Balance druid that's 13/13. This entire post is absolute garbage.
Perpetuating bad information is why your pugs suck. Because casuals read this junk and actually believe it.
Simcraft cannot properly model true helter-skelter since there's 0 heroic tank and spanks and you have to do heroics to get 372 gear.
Good job, Fox, you just made a bunch of 12 year olds think Shadow Priests are bad.

Y'know, Roan, your post might be illustrating the difference between theorycrafting and reality.

I've always disagreed with the concept of a hybrid tax. Here's why: the talent trees are designed so that I can only perform one of the roles at a time. I can't tank and heal simultaneously. I can't heal as well as a dedicated healer while simultaneously dpsing as well as a dedicated dps.
The hypothetical fear is that if there were no hybrid tax every raid would be druids and paladins. If we need to penalize druids and paladins in all their roles in order to get people to play rogues and warlocks then that just means there's something wrong with the rogue and warlock classes. A class should be fun to play on its own terms, not because it's "better" than other classes. Druid kitty, and ret, and rogue dps should be about equal. You should be able to choose the spec you like because you like it, for the unique snowflake that it is, not because you're avoiding a tax.

Druid tears are sweet to me. This game has been to easy for them for too long

Just ferals, my friend. just ferals.

Clearly you didn't level as a balance druid pre-BC as I did.
What a fun it was as a "mage" that got a clearcasting proc by using melee.
During wrath we had to try and get an eclipse by stacking crit and hoping it would proc when we needed it.
Oh yes, we've had it so easy.

Resto druids have been adequate to strong for years. Currently adequate but trending slightly stronger.
Balance druids have been mostly weak for years, exceedingly weak in PvP. Currently stronger than the balance druid average, although with a decent nerf now incoming they will be trending lower.
Cat druids have historically been mostly average, but until recently the complicated John Madden-esque play style allowed a wider variation in efficiency based on player skill than was the case with most specs. Currently adequate after a strong start to Cataclysm but still trending downward, especially in PvP, due to a rapid-fire series of across the board nerfs and a concurrent rise in fortunes of the class with which they share a play style, rogues.
Bear druids. Rare since early Wrath for far too many reasons to get into here. Adequate tanks since early BC, especially on certain fights, but currently the least played tank. Difficult to nail down a trend for them, as their current strength, single target threat, is being nerfed while their greatest weakness, AoE threat, is being buffed.

The other side of the hybrid tax, that isn't mentioned is this: the healing classes used to be closer to their dps offspecs in earlier expansions, but now in a post-wrath (ie, cataclysmic world) a boomkin heals poorly compared to a tree, er resto druid, and a shadow priest heals poorly compared to their disc/holy cousins. Ditto with elemental shammies (though rain is still pretty cool)
Thus, we are paying a tax on a service which, if we chose to use, would not only cripple our dps but NOT be VERY helpful!
It's like saying 'you have a 1992 Saab in your garage. You're going to have to pay more to drive your current car - even though the 1992 Saab doesn't go fast anymore and you don't drive it'
I think that with the grand health pools and the nerfing of off-spec-heals the hyrbrid tax too should be nerfed. (Back in the Burning Crusade when my Boomkin off healed routinely, the tax was justified).
Love,
Bruincub

I cannot count the number of 5-man groups that I (as a spriest) have saved from a wipe by popping Divine Hymn then Prayer of Mending, and back to shadowform for DPS. It gives a boost to party healing in a clutch situation.
TonyKP Mar 3rd 2011 11:03AM
I think Blizzard's point of view is more that a hybrid can *spec* into another role, not that they can perform it in their current spec.
Brasson Mar 2nd 2011 1:48PM
Theorycrafting cannot calculate the DPS increase from our furious indignation at years of hybrid taxes.
Doomkin forever!
spooner Mar 2nd 2011 1:53PM
I am a semi-serious raider and understand where you are coming from.
However, I didnt see a single mention of the pvp aspect, as warlock i cannot stop dpsing and heal myself up. Nothing is more irritating than having a target near dead and having the pally/druid/priest heal themselves up.
IMO if you want to play a hybrid class and are specced dps, your heals should be locked out until you switch specs. Then you should be able to compete with the "pure" classes. And before i get flamed for the inevitable "well, i have to drop shadow form/i cant heal in cat form. I mean switch to a healing spec. If you are unwilling to do that then I dont believe you have the right to complain about your insignificant and unproven "hybrid tax".
