Breakfast Topic: Has Deathwing caught up with you yet?

It's just another day of questing for this frost mage, flying all over Twilight Highlands to get Fading into Twilight
Another day, another dollar -- this one being earned in Uldum. As I'm following Indi -- er, Harrison Jones all over the endless rolling sand dunes and speaking to cat people who somehow speak Common after being secluded for eons, I meet my newest archnemesis again. I actually see him coming this time, lurking in the distance, attempting to creep his behemoth body up behind me. There's no achievement this time, just a dead body amongst the flames.
All right, Deathwing, you've destroyed my homeland and you've killed me twice; I'm throwing down my gaunt -- cloth gloves! This is war.
Where were you when Deathwing struck? Has he gotten you more than once? Perhaps you feel, as I do, that there should be an achievement each time he strikes you down.

I am yet to see him and I haven't even seen anyone in my guild receive the achievment either which is a little worrying... unless I missed it because i ignore guild achis in general O_o

I was getting my dk to 85 (finally) in the Twilight Highlands, when suddenly, the skies turned red and blood rained down from the sky!!! (Ok, so no blood, but still...)
In the distance, I saw an outline, flying unstoppably towards me.
I clicked. It was Deathwing.
I was terrified! I fly towards him as fast as my gryphon could take me, but by then he was already heading a different way! I flew to the ground, looking for the flames that would inevitably burn away my very skin!
But I had escaped.
"GOD DAMN YOU DEATHWING!!!", I yelled!

It's strange, I've been playing since Cata and have never once been killed by him.
I do Archaeology every day, and level 2 alts, yet still no Deathwing...
Felinae Mar 3rd 2011 5:24PM
In beta I was doing Archeology in Wetlands and suddenly the world went red and the dragon started flying overhead - I fled. I got away in time and patted myself on the back. I week later it was announced there was an achievement for being killed by him.
I finally got the achievement on live a few weeks ago. I was effectively afk doing some guild invites and promotions while standing around in Twilight Highlands, I noticed the achievement pop up in guild chat, looked across and found I was dead.
My husband, how is one of the aforementioned achievement hounds, despite having got the Professor title and spent hours farming elementals around the world, still doesn't have the achievement.

What is this I don't even. I've never even heard of this stuff, is this some kind of elaborate april fool's joke?
Neyssa Mar 3rd 2011 8:14AM
Nope its not a joke. Deathwing casually flies around Azeroth, and if you are (un)lucky enough to get in his way, you die. To make up for this unlucky thing, Blizz grants you an achievment (I think its called I stood in Fire). Most people (achiement fanatics) are looking for a chance to die to the great dragon, but you cannot predict where he will show up. I have not seen him either, but even if I would, I would avoid him (and hope to get a 'Not stood in fire' achievment before the next expansion :D)

Look in your achievements tab under Exploration and then under Cataclysm. You'll find the achievement there.

It may as well be a joke. I've played nearly every day since Cata came out and still haven't seen this mythical dragon anywhere. >.
Marcosius Mar 3rd 2011 10:50AM
Well my amazement stemmed from the fact that I've never been killed by him, nor have heard anyone else talking about it before this article... Granted I have spent much less time playing the game since Cata than I once did - still a good 7-10 hours every week.

It's no joke. Blizz makes DW fly around in random zones. There's an achievement if he burns you.
But, some of us who've never , ever seen him are gwetting nervous blizz will pull the plug on his random flying and those of us who can not/do not raid will never see him.
I can live without ever killing the Lich King or doing any raid content in all of WoW, from vanilla to Cata, but I am going to raise one hellava stinkbug if I don't even get to SEE Deathwing before the end.

for those wanting to see him in game who like me havent been set on fire, do the twilight highlands quests. There is a pretty awesome cutscence / flying dragon in game battle where you help some dragons attempt totake on deathwing. You can see him in all his glory battling it out with another dragon. Also im sure there are some lowbie quests that also have deathwing in it. Not to mention he is the big dragon staring you in the face when you turn the game on.

On my main- a Draenie hunter, I was parked on the edge of the Twilight Highlands, minding my own business, when suddenly the sky darkened. I looked all around me, seeking out those famous wings of death. I found him, coming from the Eastern sea. The Dragon lit fire to everything around, including myself, and I got the achievement.
On my tank- a Night Elf Death Knight, I was in the Twilight Highlands, helping my boyfriend complete the CoC. He was about to start the next boss when the sky went red. I yelled to him not to start the boss, and mounted up. I franticly looked all about, and then I saw him. Deathwing had the nerve to be in the next section over. He dare not burn me?! So I chased him, flying as fast as I could straight into the Dragon's body. I landed after the long fall down dead as can be, but I got the achievement. The rest of the group wondered that happened to me, as they remained safely out of harms way, the pansies.

As awesome is that story is you set off my pet peeve flag. It's Draenei. Awesome that you were able to catch him.
For those looking to run him down once you hear he is in a particular zone- he only stays 10-15 seconds tops. If you see the tell tale red sky you know you are close. I'm batting .250 vs Deathwing. Saw red sky 4 times killed once. Happy hunting!
Dantis Mar 3rd 2011 8:11AM
I've seen his aftermath a few times. The only time it actually killed me was in Tanaris while afk, and the one time I got jumped in TwiHi it bugged and I didn't die. Pretty anticlimactic on all accounts.
blissfire Mar 4th 2011 4:10AM
Me too, I got the achievement but was still alive, probably because I was just passing through the zone on a flight path (maybe he can't kill you on a taxi?). I did get the achieve, though, so.
Mostly I was put out because I was tabbed out at the time and didn't even see it happen. Boo. :(
Karoc Mar 3rd 2011 8:12AM
Deathwing has not yet chosen to grace me with his achievement yet. Indeed it seems the dragon aspect's sole purpose is to give it to everyone. I've missed him about several times, sometimes in the same zone multiple times in the same day or within an hour or two of each other.

I was in uldum right after turning a quest. "hmm. blood red sky. calm before the storm type thing for the battle. very nice phasing." bam! i dropped dead instantly. and then my achievement popped. my guild said grats and i was still thinking how a 400 foot dragon snuck up on me.

Noo! I have managed to evade Deathwing, yet I have been trying to be everywhere possible that he might strike. When the shattering patch first launched, I started a night elf mage. Questing through teldrassil, darkshore, auberdine... these places surely he'd come through (again) to wreak havoc - but alas no! On my main, whom I first logged into so that I could see the damage... and got the achievement for surveying the damage. I was everywhere, no Deathwing. In the days, weeks, months after Cataclysm I've been everywhere. My main leveled to 85 and is now leveling archeology, flying all over azeroth.. no sign of him. My latest alt, which for the record has gotten higher level than any other alt I have, just hit 71 yesterday and saw no signs of him. My friend got the achievement during the week between the shattering and the cataclysm release. I think she's been toasted twice since, all 3 times in different places. Her mom evaded Deathing as he tore through the Wetlands - she moved a step forward (putting her toon near the edge of the marsh) - and everything BEHIND her was roasty-toasted while she stood there. THAT should be some kind of acheivement - "I saw the fire and lived to tell", I dunno. As far as I know, she's never been killed by him. On my Horde server, with my new alt, I've seen guildies get toasted. Not sure if they'll ever stop this from happening, but I hope I manage to run into him at least once! I mean thats not too much to ask from a dragon who wants to wipe out the world. :)

I can't wait till Deathwing becomes a raidable boss. He owes me a few repair bills. First time was in Burning Steppes. Guildies that were not on didn't believe when I told them Deathwing had killed me till I linked the achievement. I think I was the first in my guild to get it and I am not even an achievement junkie like some of my other guildmates.
