We actually lost all of them at some point in Wrath. I can't remember the exact expansion. It's nice for the on character bag space, but I totally kept mine in the bank - you can't get them anymore I don't think.

Mine vanished from my bags entirely I think in 4.0 when all the class changes came down. I made a couple lowbie shamans, so it was fairly noticeable as I made them fairly late in Wrath and could still get the Earth totem quest and item, but couldn't get Fire a bit later when I went back to the character I'd kept and she had an empty space in her bag.

The totems are gained directly from the trainers now and don't have a "physical" item to carry anymore, nor require a quest so far as I can tell.

IIRC, we lost the totems when the patch to update talents to Cata hit.
There was a point there where I still had the totems in my bag... and couldn't delete them or move them to my bank. An attempt to delete resulted in "You cannot delete that item". An attempt to put it in the bank appeared successful, but upon closing and re-opening the bank and bag, it still appeared in my bag.
I figured that it was just a couple bag slots and left it for a while and finally put them in my bank. I don't know what fixed it. Either a hotfix, or a server reboot...

It used to be that the relic we carried would substitute for needing the 4 totems in our bags. Through me for a loop first time I saw it too.

@Skarrde: i know that the relic takes the place of those totems, that wasnt the question at all.

Your totems vanished because you didn't believe in them enough. You have no one to blame but yourself.

with the Inclusion of Call of totem spells, leveling Shaman were given a quest that turned all their totems into one (which could be put in the relic spot)
When 4.0 hit the powers that be just removed all the older ones

Your totems are missing?!?!? This means that this could all be a dream that someone else is controlling and you no longer have a way to test it! Leonardo DiCaprio would be ashamed of you right now!

4.0.1 removed all class quests and therefore all class quest items, which would be in this case your totems
