Breakfast Topic: Do you play other games besides WoW?

2011 looks to be a great year for gamers. The return of Duke Nukem. Portal 2. BioWare's trifecta of Dragon Age 2, Mass Effect 3 and The Old Republic. A new Final Fantasy. A new Legend of Zelda (and a remake of the greatest game ever made, Ocarina of Time -- flame on, but you know it's true). The return of Kid Icarus. The already-released Dead Space 2. There is no shortage of great stuff to play. And all the while, sitting smugly on my desktop and the desktop of 12 million others worldwide, is that little golden "W."
When the Steam holiday sales rolled around, I found myself drowning in a sea of backlogged games. The past five years that I've played WoW, I have seen very little of games outside of it. So when I should get sucked into Mass Effect, I realized there was a massive (no pun intended) collection of great games out there I had missed! I must play them all. The challenge then was playing these other games and still playing WoW -- a balancing act I have yet to master.
With the smorgasbord of excellence awaiting gamers in 2011, how will you find yourself sneaking time outside of Azeroth? Will you succumb to the deluge of games and break away from Azeroth entirely for a time, or will you find ways to incorporate WoW and other games into your gaming schedule?

As my copy of Pokemon Black arrived yesterday there will be a lot of time devoted to that, I'm also currently playing Kirby's Epic Yarn and DA:O in preparation for 2, oh yeah and Magicka multiplayer adventure with my boyfriend. I also have Little Big Planet 2 and MvC3 for the PS3 waiting.
Yeah I don't think I could ever only play one game, or only one platform, I'm just an all round gamer, I don't watch TV I play video games.

I've been enjoying some Maffia II and some really, really, really old school: Transport Tycoon Deluxe (open ttd)... Yep, you've read it right.
But most of my time is spend inside the golden 'W'.

Love Transport Tycoon Deluxe! I have Locomotion as well. Haven't played either for far too long. Tried the beta for Cites In Motion but couldn't really get into it...
Currently playing Rift when I'm not 10-man raiding. Level 36 Defiant Justicar main-spec/Inquisitor off-spec.

I work full time and have two little kids (1 and 3) -- I have time for one game, so WoW is it and has been for 6 years. There's so much to do in Azeroth that doesn't require hours of commitment that I won't be able to finish everything I want to do before the next expansion comes out.

My situation exactly! 1 and 3 year old. I got Force Unleashes and Epic Mickey for Wii for Christmas and have played exactly one level of both combined. I come nowhere near reaching my wow goals so I never go after other games.

WoW is my one and only game, too. That's great for me because I love WoW and, over the last five years, I've saved a ton of money not buying other games (or spending money on most other forms of entertainment either).

Theres no other game. World of Warcraft is the air i´m breathing. The food im eating.
Syggy Mar 7th 2011 11:44AM
You think that's *air* you're breathing?

But then comes that awkward moment, as, you sit in front of the fridge alone, your family member or friend enters:
THEM: "Hey, what are you doing? I thought you were going to get a snack."
YOU: "No, I said I was gonna raid the fridge."
THEM: "Well why don't you open it?"
YOU: "Our tank is AFK, and we need a Rogue who knows how to Sap."
THEM: "Erm...ok...can I just put this butter in...?"
YOU: "NO, you'll reset the instance!"
THEM: "..."
YOU: "There's some chocolate in there, hopefully nobody ninja loots it."

There are other games?
Basil Berntsen Mar 7th 2011 9:23AM
Nope. Move along.
Rezai Mar 7th 2011 11:08AM
Of course there are other games. There is Warcraft, Warcraft II and umm......uhhhhh. Warcraft III!

I have tons of free time. I used to have several hobbies, play more games, watch more sports etc. etc. Since WoW it's been all WoW. I look forward to the day when there is no WoW. Like a convict looks forward to parole. By then I will probably be institutionalized and no longer any good to society. Damn them. "They put you away for life and that's exactly what they take"

i understand that blizzard has made several other games; i personally enjoy playing diablo 2 on a regular basis.
i am also aware of some older games, such as pong, and asteroids. i believe these may have been made a long time ago, before blizzard was founded.
aside from these ancient examples, i am not aware of any other games.

One game I'm really getting into recently is DC Universe Online. The combat system is really different--you specialize in a weapon choice that you can combine with your power-set, making for all sorts of fun combat style choices: fire brawling, mental hand blaster, ice rifle, whatever you want! I just love how you can interchange all the weapons with every power set and have it work.
But more specifically is the way that the moves handle. All of the weapon moves you use work like combos: hold left click, for example, will be a melee charge attack. A hold right will be a charged blast, just left/right will be a quick melee/ranged attack. Then take for example right+right+right and you get two normal ranged attacks with a boosted third after it--there are a lot of attacks, tons of combos, and I find it very interesting to learn all of them.

the husband already has a level 17 something or another on RIFT. The more I watch him play over his shoulder the more I'm tempted to purchase the download.
But, I've never been a gamer before WoW so I'm not sure I'd be able to transition to another game, no matter how shiny and awesome
mamasama Mar 7th 2011 8:20AM
And anyway, when I asked my husband what class his character in RIFT was, he replied,
"Paladin."
"But, you have a pet." I protested.
He then said with a little too much glee, "I knoooooow!"

Rift is really amazing. I feel it is very polished for how new it is and the way the class combinations work is amazing.
For anyone not familiar w/ Rift: you pick an archtype (Warrior, Rogue, Cleric, Mage) Then you pick 3 specializations, which you can pick form anything for that class. In WoW terms you might make a ranged caster giving him the lock affliction tree, the mage fire tree, and the priest discipline tree. You unlock the higher level spells from a tree by spending points in it. So to unlock say power word: sheild you may have to invest 20 points in the discipline tree. It works out well and makes for a lot of fun trying different combinations.

Yep, got to level 22 in Rift last night. It was mind boggling when I stopped in Iron Tombs (the first instance) and realized my Tank was a rogue, my Healer was a rogue [bard], melee DPS was straight rogue and I.... Me and my Dire Wolf as a Ranger was a rogue. Last guy was a melee DPS.. Cleric.

It's a great game, and has pulled nearly my entire WoW guild over.
And don't worry about picking up a new game, that's one thing Trion has done well with this game: its default keys are nearly identical to the WoW set, just pick a class and go.
My one caution is that it has many temptations for those that have short attention spans. A fedex quest took me 1.5 hours yesterday because I stopped at every rift and invasion along the way.
