Chris, the old titles were not removed so old players could have something to cherish. Blizzard had every intention to keep the original PVP titles available for the entirety of WoW's life.

They removed the titles, and the whole system that rewarded those titles, because the system was broken and rewarded incredibly degenerative gameplay.

The titles disappeared *only* because the system was broken. Now they have a better system, so the titles are back. That's it.
