Every week, WoW Insider brings you Encrypted Text for assassination, combat and subtlety rogues. Chase Christian will be your guide to the world of shadows every Wednesday. This week, we talk about an addon that solves the problem of missing interrupts.
Once, when experimenting on
my holy paladin (I'm a dirty traitor, I know), I healed through an entire heroic dungeon with my user interface disabled.
Matticus had recommended the exercise, as it allows you to focus on what's happening and your surroundings instead of little green bars. The experience was interesting, but I simply couldn't handle it. I'm an information junkie, and I want to know everything there is to know all at once. Why? Because knowledge is power, knowledge is the food of the soul, and knowing is half the battle.
With that said, there's still such a thing as too much information. I can set up my UI to have all sorts of numbers and statistics displayed everywhere, but it's not valuable unless I can interpret them. When you're in a high-stress situation like learning a new boss fight, you want to spend as little time as possible worrying about your UI. A good UI should make your rogue easier to play, not harder.
Let's get kicking
You've all heard
my spiel about Kicking before, and you understand the importance of interrupting.
Cataclysm's first tier of raiding is filled to the brim with fights that require good interrupts, with at least half of the bosses in each raid zone requiring interrupting. Rogues used to be the only horse in town when it came to interrupting, but now the other melee classes have interrupts they can use to assist us with, in addition to several ranged classes being able to stop spells too. We do have one thing they don't, though: experience. Because of this, it's very likely that we're going to be assigned to interrupt most of the time.
I talked about my favorite cast bar addon, Quartz, in
my general rogue addon article a while back. While Quartz does make it simple to configure and display cast bars for just about anything, it's missing one key feature: blacklisting/whitelisting. Every spell that's cast by my target will be shown to me, which means I'm stuck trying to read the text on the cast bar to see if I need to interrupt a given spell. Boss cast times are often so fast that between reading the spell, pushing
Kick, and latency, you can miss an interrupt or let a tick of a channeled spell be unleashed.
Pick your kicks
Gnosis solves that problem. As an aside,
gnosis means "knowledge" in Greek, which is incredibly appropriate. Now, Gnosis is a fully developed cast bar replacement addon, but you don't have to forsake your current cast bar addons to use Gnosis. Gnosis allows you to choose which spells are (or aren't) displayed, which lets you filter out unnecessary spells and focus on important ones. I simply create a brand new cast bar and dedicate it to only showing important spells. I add all of the spells I want to interrupt to the whitelist, and then the new cast bar only pops up when one of those spells is being cast. Along with
my fearless mage assistant, Machiyariko, I'll demonstrate how to either blacklist/whitelist
Arcane Blast.
First of all, don't use any of the default Gnosis setup wizards, unless you're going to replace your other cast bar addon. Start out by manually making a new cast bar, and give it a memorable name. I usually name my Gnosis bar something like "BIG BAD BOSS ABILITY." Once you've made your new bar, make sure to set the Unit field to Target (see second image) to ensure that it will only activate when your enemy is casting spells. Once that's completed, feel free to adjust the size, scale, and position of the bar wherever you like.

Under the "Hide castbar" menu, you can set the cast bar to blacklist all spells that you specify. These are spells that won't be shown when cast, so you'll see all other spells. This is what you'd use to block specific spells from showing up on your cast bar, which can be useful for spells that you can't interrupt or simply don't want to. If a spell on the blacklist is cast, the cast bar never appears, and you know you don't have to interrupt it. If any other spell is cast, then you'll see the bar. As you'll see below, Arcane Blast doesn't show up on the new bar, while
Flamestrike shows up as expected.
Whitelisting works in the opposite manner, so that only spells that you list will show up. I set Arcane Blast to be whitelisted, and now I can see it being cast in the following picture, on a huge cast bar that I can't miss. You can use this functionality to (for example) only display
Arcane Storm on
the Maloriak encounter. This ensures that you're alerted of the spell instantly and that you won't accidentally kick
Release Aberrations on accident.
By filtering out spells that our enemies are casting, we can ensure that we can both interrupt quickly and also interrupt only those spells that we care about.
Deadened, of
Black Temple fame, was a great addon that used to provide a very similar functionality, at least until it was discontinued. Gnosis has quickly risen to become one of my go-to addons for any sort of interrupting work, which we seem to have plenty of lately. Good interrupts will save the raid, while sloppy
Kicks are
a surefire way to wipe your raid. If you've got the reaction time of a ninja catching a fly with chopsticks, then perhaps Gnosis isn't for you. However, for the vast majority of players, Gnosis is a powerful tool that lets us do our job better. Feel free to ask any questions you have about Gnosis in the comments, and I'll do my best to assist.
Check back every Wednesday for the latest rogue strategies in Encrypted Text! We'll show you how to navigate Cataclysm
rogue basics, dig into new rogue mechanics, and gear up for heroics.

"I healed through an entire heroic dungeon with my user interface disabled. Matticus had recommended the exercise, as it allows you to focus on what's happening and your surroundings instead of little green bars. "
I don't understand how this is possible. You can't see your mana, you can't see your target's health. I full understand how it's logistically possible to cast the spells and select targets (and I like the idea of how it forces you to know what you're doing rather than rely on your UI), but...how do you know who to heal when? That part I just don't understand.

It was back in Wrath, where the only spell I'd cast was Holy Light.
When a tank got hit, I could see the boss hit them. When an add was on a player, I would see them getting beat up. When someone gets a debuff, they usually glow or have a spell effect on them. That was the entire point of the exercise: to see all of the little things that you would normally miss.
elvendude Mar 9th 2011 2:25PM
I see! Sounds like an interesting exercise. =)
Daynthebold Mar 9th 2011 2:31PM
@Christian
Did it help you with learning where your abilities are on your keyboard? I find myself frequently looking at my keybinds to hit the right one sometimes and am looking for ways to break out of that.

"It was back in Wrath, where the only spell I'd cast was Holy Light."
I'd imagine that exercise in more recent content is beyond difficult and you would have to be some sort of god to be able to do so in a heroic dungeon. Besides the content now pretty much requires you to be able to see the big picture, or you will die anyway.

I suggest you try it again, Chase. This time, let go your conscious self and act on instinct.
Your UIs can deceive you. Don't trust them.

Yes, and one should wear a blind fold and use the force.
tannerveo Mar 9th 2011 2:15PM
Mhmm.... my computer crashed and I was forced to play without any addons because I did not have time to reinstall before a raid. So I went without em, did a few BG's and suddenly I was without any addon except bagnon.
lol
I like this one though, it takes practice and is all about what you perfer. I like PvP without addons, and PvE to an extent, DBM feels somewhat maditory.

Wow your timing is great. As a rogue I was assigned to interrupt all of Halfus's Shadow Novas last night. This was the first time for me with Storm Rider active. At 50% I inadvertently kicked -- as a knee-jerk reaction to seeing the cast bar -- Halfus's first Furious Roar -- which threw the timing of my kick CD off and I could not interrupt the subsequent cast causing the raid to eat one. I use Quartz as well, and was thinking this morning about looking for a way to turn off or eliminate cast bars for spells that are not interruptible.

Speaking of Rogue UI's and mods and stuff...
What's a good addon that announces when a kick was successful? Or that a sap is about to fall from a target?
My current macro is kinds spammy.
Khirsah Mar 9th 2011 2:48PM
Check out sapper enhanced, and I Interrupted That! (I think that's what its called. Also, IceHUD has an option to announce these things. There is anothet, Ican't remember the name, but it telks you when it is your turn to kick, for times when you are sharing the duty with other rogues. I have not used that one, but it might have what you are looking for.
Khirsah Mar 9th 2011 3:01PM
Wow, my previous post was sloppy. I am not very good on the iphone keypad. I won't go through and correct all my fat-fingered mistakes, but if you have any trouble interpreting my add-on suggestions, just let me know.
Sorry to everyone that I subjected to that travesty, and to the English language itself.
felipe707 Mar 9th 2011 3:01PM
For interrupts, Interrupted is a great addon, it reports what spell you kicked in any way you want (/say, /party,/raid etc..)
Pretty useful, especially before the nerf on Halfuls =)
ekfxc Mar 9th 2011 3:03PM
I believe Sapper Enhanced is broken presently -- at least it was for me and feedback on Curse indicates others are having similar problems. Thanks for the tip about I Interrupted That!
Scott Clark Mar 9th 2011 3:37PM
I've used I Interrupted That!, That Just Happened and Elphie's Interrupt Say in the past.
Currently, I'm using Raeli's Spell Announce (and it seems to be growing in popularity, based on the number of players I see RSA announcements from). It's way simple to configure, and works out of the box with all sorts of interrupts, cooldowns and CC, and allows your messages to be customized and directed to different channels on a per-spell basis.
For Rogues, RSA is good for announcing when Sap goes up and falls off (and who the sap target is) as well as Kick (including listing what spell you interrupted or, if the Kick failed, it announces why) and even letting your Tricks target know that Tricks is active!
Izzy Mar 9th 2011 2:37PM
This would be even nicer if there were a few solid premade lists of white/blacklists. Having to add every single spell that each mob has seems a bit tedious. Sure it's not bad for raiding, but if you're talking about adding in herorics, a PvP set, etc, that's a ton of spells.
Hail Mar 9th 2011 3:13PM
One of the options in the screenshots is to enable it for main/offspec, so assuming you PvE and PvP with different specs, this shouldn't be an issue.
perasitewow Mar 9th 2011 2:42PM
Is there some method to import a list of known spells that need interrupting for raiding purposes? It would suck just a little having to find specific spell names for all bosses.
Kole Mar 9th 2011 2:46PM
This would be a great addon for both my rogue and my pally's rebuke and my DK's.........yeah I have too many toons...
But it is great that one addon can be utilized by several different classes.
mr.nice Mar 10th 2011 7:02AM
Any idea how well this works on a boss like Maloriak? I've got interrupt duty on the Arcane Storm (think thats the name) and I have it pretty much covered but something like this would make it a walk in the park.
Perhaps too easy... I actually quite like the stress of having to decide if the cast is storm or not and if it is then interrupt and if not then leave.
However on a tired night this could be a godsend.
Has anyone used this on Maloriak HC yet?
