Addon Spotlight: 2 addons by Shackleford

Sometimes when I am out looking for new addons for the Spotlight, I find an author rather than any one addon. Many addon authors are not one-timers -- they've got a few addons under their belts because they either love the work or just can't get enough out of punishing themselves. Suffice to say, we are very appreciative of their work, and really, where would we be without them?
Today's Addon Spotlight focuses on two cool utilities from Shackleford, addon author to the stars (maybe). I am a big fan of little utilities, since most of these little wonders sit idly by, performing their functions with nary a whisper or whimper. Things just happen. If you don't already know them, may I introduce CalendarHUD and WeaponUP.
CalendarHUD
CalendarHUD is a very simple tool that places little numbers next to the calendar icon on your minimap. The top number shows how many activities you've got for that given day, while the left and right numbers represent the number of available guild sign-up events and the number of pending invitations you have, respectively. You've also got a new, more visible 15-minute alarm before any events are going to take place.

The WoW calendar is one of those user interface features that I was never big on until late Wrath. Over time, the in-game calendar transformed into an amazing tool, one that makes raiding easier, permits inviting without an external program, and allows tracking of an otherwise unwieldy amount of people. WoW's calendar is a piece of the UI that needs to make its way into the nomenclature of the MMO genre in a bigger way.
That's why CalendarHUD is a nice touch to the built-in calendar -- a couple of simple tweaks makes the calendar even better. Pending invites is huge for me, since I rarely pop in and out of the calendar, just peeking in to see what new items have been added. At a glance, I already know how many new things to look for.
Download CalendarHUD at [Curse] or [WoWInterface].
WeaponUp
Have I talked about WeaponUP in the past? I'm not entirely sure. However, I can tell you something that I do almost on a regular, daily basis. Do you go into random heroics, dungeons, combat, PvP, or any other gear-dependent in-game experience wielding a fishing pole or some other roleplaying item that really wouldn't put a dent in even the freshest level 1? It happens all the time to me. Oh, and what happens when you're attacked while you're fishing, your hands fumbling around the keyboard for your equipment swap macro or rifling through your bags for the weapon that you totally forgot what the items looks like?
WeaponUp is your safety net. The addon equips your weapons from whatever gear set that you configure using the in-game equipment manager. I'm a personal fan of the in-game equipment manager, so this addon fits nicely right along side it. When you enter combat without a suitable weapon, WeaponUp swings (ha-ha) into action. The addon even supports quickly equipping your weapon if you are attacked during fishing escapades, equipping or dequipping (new word) your Argent lance if you are still punishing yourself by jousting for some reason.
The addon does require you to be using the in-game equipment manager, and you'll first have to let the addon know what set you want it to use. All you have to do is type /wu setname, where setname is, well, the set you want to use.
I am more than a fan of WeaponUp -- I'm a convert.
Download WeaponUp at [Curse] or [WoWInterface].
Shackleford, thank you for these awesome little tools. Check out Shackleford's pages on Curse or WoWInterface. Do drop him a line and let him know that you like his work.
Speaking of letting people know that you like their work, I am really liking this whole "spotlight an addon author" deal. If you have any addon author that you would like to see as part of Addon Spotlight, drop me an email and we can see about making that happen. The addon community works hard, and we should show them a little bit of love. Send your recommendation emails to mat@wowinsider.com.
Mailbag!

Thanks for the email, Bacchus. There are plenty of addons out there that will do the bottom black bar for you. I am a fan of making one yourself with kgPanels, and I've outlined how to do a simple black bar in my kgPanels Addon Spotlight. There's also Sunn - Viewport Art, a very popular addon that allows you to change the size of the rendered screen and put textures or artwork in the new empty space. Commenters will be lauding their favorites too, I am sure.Hey Mat!
Quick question to see if you happen to know of any decent mods that could put a black bar on the bottom portion of my screen to act as a background for all my addons, currently I can just see behind it all which looks a little displeasing, if I can figure that out I plan to submit my UI!
Thanks for any help you can offer in advance.
-Bacchus
The type of addon you use will also be dependent on whether you want to change the resolution of your game window with a view port addon or just add the black bar. If you're just going in to add the bar and keep the resolution the same, I'd go with a simple kgPanels solution.
There is a one-word answer to this question, but I'm not going to give you the easy answer. Instead, I will allow the point to languish a bit while you settle into your chair for a nice, long discussion about alt addons and how it would be a wonderful thing to be able to see all of your alt's items, banks and inventories and get a quick handle on his skills, reputations, bag usage and even equipment.Mat:
A question for add-on spotlight if I might...
Like many players, I have a bank alt with his own guild. Is there an add-on that would let my other characters (who are in different guilds) check the inventory of my bank alt? It would eliminate the need to log in and out multiple times when I'm engineering, or jewelcrafting etc. Thanks in advance. Great column!
Dryas
Wouldn't that all be so amazing to have in one simple addon?
Altaholic.
See you guys next week -- and if you're at PAX East, I'm probably seeing you tomorrow.

I always love these teeny addons that do a small, specialised task, because, more often than not, they become the addons you can't live without.
Derrek Mar 10th 2011 5:28PM
Oh aye.
Math, Misspelled, FluidFrames, the list goes on to infinity.

I've actually been having issues with Altoholic. I tried to set it up again the other day and it just kept blowing up on me. (Not to mention showing old gold ammounts for my main and not updating anything with new toons.)
A simpler addon to use I find is BagSync. When used with Combuctor (and amazing bag addon) it makes it so all you have to do is click your portrait on the bag frame and you get a dropdown of all toons on that server that it has seen. You can then view all their bags from there. It also adds a notation in your tooltips of how much of an item you have in your bags, your bank, your alts, and your guild banks. As both total and individual numbers. If all you want is to know your items BagSync is my recommendation. If you want more though (and don't have issues with it) Altoholic does EVERYTHING you could ever want and probably more.

IIRC, there was a point where the author changed formats or something(TM). and it caused the new model to blow up if that old data was around.
I suggest removing the addon from the addons folder completely (delete it and it's companion, DataStore). Delete the data for it from /WTF/Account//SavedVariables (delete anything Altoholic* or DataStore*). Then re-download and re-install the addon.
That ought to solve the blowing up AND the showing of old data. You will have to re-log in to any character to want it to know about, but it should stop blowing up.

I moved from Altoholic to Armory a few months ago. Couldn't be happier with the change.

I give Armory a vote as well.
Shows you the character pane for all your chars, with their proffesions on the right.
When you mouse-over an item, it tells you how many you have in any of your character's inventory, equiped, mail, auctions, bank, etc. (and guild bank ofcourse)

Sunn - Viewport Art is really great. No more mass of bars at the bottom covering your characters feet so you cant tell if youre standing in fire, plus, since its lowering the actual area rendered, it can actually improve performance.
Theres still a bug with it and sunshafts though, but a small price to pay.
Heres my UI built around sunn art from a few months ago, it customized slightly for each toon, but i dont see any shots in my imageshack acct from my shammy or DK.

Sunn also bugs out if you have the new water enabled.
Cyno01 Mar 10th 2011 10:39PM
She fixed that w/ one of the early patches I think, Hasn't been an issue for a while, I was glad to be able to turn the new water effects on finally.

One of the cool things you can do with viewport if you have multiple monitors and a supporting video card is to span your monitors so windows sees them as 1 monitor then use viewport to shrink the wow render window back down to 1 monitor. This allows you to put all of your non essential ui elements on a 2nd monitor. Like maps, raid strats, inventory etc.
Lyrd Mar 11th 2011 12:33PM
It doesn't even have to be an even black bar. Here's what I do with sunnart.

Altoholic is the mutts!
Got a trade cooldown coming up on an alt?
It'll tell you.
Mail about to expire on an alt?
It'll tell you.
Alts on another server?
Doesn't matter!
(but there's only one 'a' in Altoholic - like ALCoholic, ie someone addicted to ALCohol, ALToholics are addicted to ALTs :))
Kurtis Mar 10th 2011 6:46PM
So I assume that, if something is the "mutts", that is good?
sayling Mar 10th 2011 7:22PM
Sorry, my bad, it's a (London) English colloquialism...
Mutt's = Mutt's nuts
Mutt = dog
nuts = well, I'll leave that to you to work out*
*actually, better not - as the complete phrase may be a colloqialism in itself! See http://www.phrases.org.uk/meanings/dog's%20bollocks.html
Vaufe Mar 10th 2011 7:33PM
@Kurtis: I believe "mutts" is slang for "Dogs Bollacks" which is slang for "a good thing."
And on the OP's topic, personally I hate suffix "aholic." Alcoholics are addicted to alcohol. Are altaholics addicted to altahol?
Better get some chocahol this evening for my chocoholic wife.

Bagnon will also show you the bags (and bank slots) of your alts.
Also: Outfitter will reequip weapons when you enter combat. I know there's an in-game version, but I can't live without that automatic lance equipping!

Is there any chance of an RP addon round-up? Of late (by a loose definition of 'of late') some really excellent new ones have come onto the scene, like Mary-Sue and TotalRP2. Not to mention that MyRoleplay has been more or less completely overhauled.
I know it's not the usual focus, but I'd love a good discussion of the pros and cons of them.
Saeadame Mar 10th 2011 5:52PM
I think they would probably discuss that kind of thing in All the World's a Stage. I know there was an article about RP addons not that long ago in that section (or at least, I can remember it, so it's within the last 9 months or so).
Sean Riley Mar 10th 2011 5:57PM
Potentially, yeah, but then I'd also love to see a more technically focused look at them. :) It could go either way.
Revynn Mar 10th 2011 5:46PM
Semi off topic, but I figure this is as good a place to ask as any.
Ready check goes out and I start glancing through my buffs to make sure I have everything I need.
Food . . .
Flask . . .
Fel Armor . . .
Pet out and not on passive . . .
Kings . . .
Might . . .
Dark Intent passed out . . .
. . . . Ok, I think I'm ready.
"You were away from keyboard for a Ready Check"
Dangit.
Is there an addon that can semi-automate this, like some sort of in-game checklist based on class and raid comp?
