I actually didn't get into new Who until the Catherine Tate era. I watched because I thought she would be AWFUL, and some how she got me hooked. Then I went back and watched Eccleston Era through to the end of season 4 and have been watching ever since. End of series 4 has me in floods of tears every damn time. Donna is ridiculously awesome.

I do love Matt Smith and I enjoy Karen's work, but they're both still lacking the gravitas of the older actors. However Matt is definitely inhabiting the role, in a very Tom Baker style and I think he is only going to get better. He is maybe also let down a little bit by the ...fairytale emphasis of S Moffat, the current show runner who is a brilliant writer but a little bit inconsistent for a whole series.
