Raid Rx: Raid healing horror stories that taught us a thing or two

A new PTR build went online a few days ago. We're getting closer and closer to a release. Two weeks, perhaps? End of March? Ides of March even? Who knows?
The Spirit Link totem has officially been added on the PTR. I've never heard Joe Perez squawk with so much glee before after using it in Zul'Aman. If you want to read more details on the totem, go read up on Joe's post about it. Other than a shortened cooldown on Tranquility for resto druids, still nothing on the defensive front.
Chakra for priests now lasts a really long time! In fact, it lasts so long that the effect won't go away until it is canceled. I liked the whole Chakra volleying mechanic. It was an interesting way to add additional thought for holy priests. The last big change I want to note is the pushback protection that druids and priests are getting. Divine Hymn, Hymn of Hope, and Tranquility now have 100% pushback protection from damage. For those that didn't know, a pushback effect is caused when you take damage. When you cast a spell, it might take a little longer than normal because you've been hit by an enemy. This causes the casting bar to move back slightly.
This week, I want to share some healing stories. Some will make you laugh; some will make you cry; and some will simply make you plant your face in your palm.
Lessons in dual-spec keybinding
The first lesson I have is one that's related to your UI. Try to maintain as much consistency as you can between your dual specs, especially when it comes to keybinds. If you don't, you'll regret it later.
Back when dual spec had just come out, I didn't switch specs often (if at all). We decided to clear out Naxxramas. We needed some additional enchanting mats, and we had an hour left to kill in our raid night. Even though a number of us had gained the Undying, we always wanted to go back and try for a shot at the Immortal. Normally, when most guilds attempt these Immortal runs, they do the hardest stuff first. They go after the Instructor; in the event someone dies on that encounter, they can simply reset the instance or pass leadership to another player and try it again.
But nope, not us. We were playing it cool. We had set no expectations. As we slowly progressed through the the other wings (not the Military Wing), each one of us noted that no one had died yet. No one wanted to say it. No one wanted to jinx our record. Deep down inside, I was thinking it, and I know others were. You don't go 9 bosses with no one dying without that type of realization.
Figures someone would go out on a limb and say, "Hey, no one died yet. We might be able to get Immortal!"
Cue the groans and facepalms.
So we got to Instructor Razuvious, and I switched out to my second spec (and I can't remember the precise reason why). I had a feeling something was going wrong. Yet I had handled the Mind Control numerous times. I could not foresee why this time was going to be any different. What I failed to notice is that Mind Control wasn't technically on my bar. That same key for Mind Control in my first spec ended up being Devouring Plague. So without even looking, when I reached out to hit Mind Control, I ended up placing a DoT on the mob, which started the encounter. I scrambled but couldn't get the spell off from my spell book in time. The adds crushed two players before I could regain control, but by then it was far too late.
Always make sure your binds are as consistent as possible between both specs.
You mad, bro?
The next story I have is what inspired my efforts to really take a step back and analyze the whole sequence of events that lead to player deaths during raid encounters. During The Burning Crusade, I was the healing lead at the time, and we were working on that epic healing boss, Gurtogg Bloodboil. Our attempts at the time made my blood boil. We struggled that night because we kept losing the tank. I was at my wit's end.
When healing leads get to that point, that's when they start juggling healing assignments in the hope that something will click. Nope. We tried stacking healers; we tried cross assignments; we tried a whole variety of methods. But we still failed.
After the raid, the raid leader sat down with me, and I got chewed out because we weren't performing. I told him that it just wasn't possible. I ran out of tricks to try. I didn't know what we were doing wrong. I lost my mind because I didn't know what to do, and I became extremely upset.
The cause?
Turns out the tank didn't have his shield equipped. I didn't find out about this until days later.
I was mad, bro.
It could have happened to anyone
This raid healing horror story is by far my favorite. You may have heard this one before, but I still have to tell it anyway. That's largely because I wasn't at fault in any way, but it was one of those incredibly tense situations that just turned into a huge sigh of relief after we took the boss down.
We were working on the Lich King at the time. I believe it was one of earlier kills; therefore, I didn't really consider Lich King to be technically on farm just yet. We were still struggling a little with a few key phases. After breezing through phase 1 of the Lich King with no losses and surviving phase 2 with minimal casualties, we entered the final phase of the encounter. The ranged DPS was busy unloading spells on the Vile Spirits floating around in the air, as usual. Melee players were strafing and shuffling around the Lich King trying to gain position on him. Healers were doing everything in their power to assist in slowing down the damage from incoming spirits. Of course, the tanks were doing their job in dragging Lich King from one side to the other.
Things were going smoothly. Every player was stable. All of a sudden, I hear a frantic scream from one of my tanks, "Taunt! Taunt! I fell off the ledge!"
For a healer who runs through every worse case scenario in the book, a tank falling off the ledge had never been a situation that I had anticipated before. I actually had to take a moment and look up from of my frames to visually see for myself. Thank goodness, our second tank picked up the Lich King in time. We were able to get Lich King down that attempt, but the relief we felt when we hit that 10% washed right over us. We had a good laugh about it for a long time.
What about you? Do you have any hilarious stories to share, or a story with a lesson behind it?

The tank fell off the ledge? That hilarious. It would be horrible if you wiped, though.

Seen that happen on LK and on Kologarn more than once - pretty funny the first time, not so much the 2nd, 3rd, 4th, 5th...

my favourite version of this was pre fight ones
when a summoning stone goes up i used to summon myself - slow fall - run off
a warlock tried repeating it with teleport...
then got asked to show us again...
its got a cooldown :)

We were raiding Naxx 10 man. We were waiting to pull Razuvious because one of the tanks had gone afk for a few. My wife had just gotten the Ethereal Soul Trader and was purchasing items to see whet they did. Well, it turns out that the Ethereal Liqueur turns you into a fleshbeast and basically "fears" you.
Yup, you guessed it. She went straight into the training ring, pulling the boss, and killing us all. Gotta be careful drinking unknown substances ;)

With regards to the last story, when we were working on LK25, we were once at bout 50% in P3, with 2 people down, but it was going well. Someone called for an innervate, and the only available was that of the feral druid MTing the LK. She had once done it on putricide without taking a melee hit in caster form and thought it would work again, so upon the call she blew innervate then frantically spammed Bear Form - unfortunately LK got a hit in and the lack of armour provided the LK with a 200k hit on her. The OT was quick on the ball though and we continued into P3 ^^
Also note that the MT was actually an extremely good player, she just happened to think it was possible if well times and it backfired a tad :P At the very least it was one of the funniest tank deaths I've seen.

Maybe I run with crazy druids (actually I'm pretty sure that's a verifiable fact), but have seen druid tanks do this many a time. Unlike your tank, they tend to wait for the boss to start some cast, or hit the other tank, or during some other mechanic where they won't take a hit. But I seem to recall a few Barkskin casts of Rebirth or Innervate while they still had the boss' attention. At least they had their pants on. If they were REALLY picking on me they'd have done without those too.

I'll give you something from just last night.
Our 10-player group was in Bastion of Twilight, running the gauntlet just before Theralion & Valiona. I had only the night before finally assembled Tyrande's Favorite Doll (nearly 200 artifacts, if you're curious) and was so excited about it. I had it macro'd in with Wild Growth so I'd be sure to use it on every CD.
I backed up a little to get out of range of some AoE attack while I was healing, keeping an eye on the pack of mobs behind me so I wouldn't wander too close.
I forgot about the AoE aspect of Tyrande's Favorite Doll. Oops.
Somehow we managed not to wipe. Barely.

As a healer myself, lucky to have received this Trinket early into cata, I use vuhdo as my healing addon. This addon has the ability to auto trigger your own use trinkets everyone CD. Very handy feature considering my other Trinket is the Jar of Ancient Remedies which has an on use effect. I never have to worry about triggering my trinkets. Just be careful while around cc targets, not sure how many I have broke. :-)

My funny healing story:
"Well you're a paladin. You off-heal."
As I stand there with my big hammer, my boundless mana pool of 12, and a dumbfounded look on my face.
Lissanna Mar 11th 2011 4:43PM
what the heck is off-healing? lol
zainwolf Mar 11th 2011 5:18PM
Off-healing is something that elemental shamans and balance druids should be ready to do at any moment and no others. Ret pallies, feral druids and such should never be expected to heal, they don't have the mana for it, they don't have the spellpower for it and you'd be better off if they continue to dps in hopes of killing whatever it is before it's too late.
Of course if someone is screaming for you to off-heal, one thing you could do if you're not able to effectively off-heal is get far from the mob killing your tank then taunt it and run like hell. Gives the tank time to get cds back up and heals time to regen or others time to battle res, whatever the case might be.
Flexibility is win yet so many want to tunnel vision into things with a standard method and not adapt to the unexpected.
RetPallyJil Mar 11th 2011 5:25PM
Beats me, but I am a team player; I tried really really hard and the tank died anyway lol
That'll teach them, i guess!

If you watch Tehseus's videos, he offheals spectacularly. Though that's more of a burst tactic in PvP and wouldn't be sustainable, so a little off-topic.
Ret also has sheath of light so they have a decent whack of spellpower at least.

"For those that didn't know, a pushback effect is caused when you take damage. When you cast a spell, it might take a little longer than normal because you've been hit by an enemy. This causes the casting bar to move back slightly."
What you describe is for spells that have "cast time" before the spell goes off. Tranquility and Priest Hymn's are "channeled" (goes off instantly but has an effect that lasts the duration of your cast) Wen channeling, pushback effects actually have the opposite effect of what you describe and make your spell cast quicker (and thus the spell effect lasts a shorter time).
Wolfshanze Mar 11th 2011 3:57PM
Thanks for the explanation... I was pretty sure making the tranq cast last longer by pushback was not a bad thing at all (more pushback plz).
Your explanation is exactly what I needed to know for my resto druid.

The first raid I ever healed was an OS pug...not too difficult, I was the tank healer while 2 priests were on raid heals. We clear all three drakes, all the trash, and head towards the boss. Everyone buffs up, mana ups, and is ready for the pull, so the MT pulls, and we start the fight. Things are going smoothly, until suddenly one of the priests starts screaming "WTF, Im OOM," and then the other priest does the same...so I am left healing everything, people standing in flame walls, adds going nuts, and I forget to refresh beacon on the MT, and he dies, raid wipes. After the wipe, raid leader starts asking what happened, how did we fail, etc. Some DPS posted healing meters....with just two people on it, only one was a priest. Turns out the first priest to go OOM had messed up his healbot bindings...and had been casting Mass Dispel, PoH, and PW:F like crazy, and no one noticed the animation....
One of my first times in a raid, I was tanking it on my blood DK who was 79, in a guild run with a lvl 71 enh shaman and a lvl 70 boomkin doing the healing for kara. I wasn't totally aware of how seriously hard the raid would be....and then the boomkin posted healing meters and I had been doing a full 3rd of the total healing....
Last one:
Uld 10 man hard modes, I wanted to gear at the time, so i joined my friends PuG on my mage....they had already downed FL, and were on XT. When I joined the raid I had high hopes, until out first try in XT, we killed the heart...and then promptly wiped. Second attempt, we killed the heart...and then promptly wiped again. So I start asking whats going on, are we missing something...and the raid leader says THE healer is having mana problems....So I check the raid, apart from our prot pally OT, the ONLY other person there who can heal was the holy priest...(pally OT, DK MT, mage(me), warlock, 2 DKs, 1 rogue, 1 hunter and a warr)
Torr Mar 11th 2011 11:21PM
Ok, couldn't resist...especially since this happened to me an hour ago...
Ok, raid leader calls for heroism to be popped, but forgets to look at the debuff of the LAST time it was popped still on half the raid for about 30sec....and I mash the hero button, blowing the CD for zero effect on half of us. Wipe then ensues on boss....first time was Hodir I think...tonight was running a guildie thru kara .... had poped it on netherspite for quick kill...then tried to pop again on the shade.....couldn't figure out why nothing happened..
And another one:
A priest friend of mine was queued up for heroics as a DPS, I invited her to my mag's lair raid as heals, but she missed that message....we had already cleared the trash, just boss left. So we all got ready, with only me and 2 lvl 70 healers in quest gear healing(priest friend still in DPS spec), the pull starts, bosses health starts going down, but the damage everyone is taking is too much for us to keep up with, and one of the lvl 70 healers dies...and then the other....and we barely manage to down the boss with 4 out of 8 ppl left....my priest friend then asks if it would have been better had she been in holy....
This one is FUNNY:
As a joke, my GM suggested wo go raiding naked, or in clown suits(what I did, lunar robe plus a bunch of cool looking green armor I had), low level content, its put to a vote, between kara, ZG, AQ 20 and MC....MC is the lucky choice, so we all run in there, get ready to go and everything...charge first boss, and die. Everyone is asks what happened, why did we all die, no one knows, so we try again....and suddenly I notice that no one is healing....I take a look at all the people we brought: Me on my lock, a rogue, 2 mages, a hunter and a DK. No one could heal enough to keep us alive while naked or in clown suits...funniest MC zerg run ever tho, once we got a healer to come along.
pwn3d Mar 11th 2011 3:50PM
Why would you get "chewed out" for underperforming? Especially since all of the details of the encounter were not looked at? A HUGE detail was the tank did not have a shield equipped, but besides that point and more importantly it's a f*ing GAME!?!?! Its borderline psychopath behavior to rail on somebody over a very pointless video game. I really don't know why people get this emotionally invested over things like this. They must have removed all other important problems from their life to be upset about something like this.
solidus.obscura Mar 11th 2011 4:10PM
Couldn't agree more. But it does get annoying when one person decides to slack off and make it suck for 9 or 24 others. Folks need to realize that wow is not a job.
Nyold Mar 11th 2011 6:28PM
I think, what bothered me more is the fact that RL chewed you out without examining other things first. And simple examinations of the encounter would have revealed the tank forgetting his shield.
