In Beyond the Dark Portal, Deathwing has a face off with Khadgar in Outland. Khadgar casts a spell that rips the metal plates from Deathwing's body. The results are messy and unpleasant. It's presumed that after this event, that's when Deathwing hides out in Deepholm -- to recover from the mess that Khadgar made of his hide.
