Breakfast Topic: Do you still play your first character?

For many, World of Warcraft was the first (and to some, the only) MMO we have ever played. In WoW, our first step into Azeroth is the level 1 character we choose for the first time. That race and class combination can be the reason you fell in love with WoW, or it may the reason you never made it past the 10-day trial. Luckily, we aren't committed to just one class, and we can take each class for a test run until we find the one we like.
With the number of race and class combinations available today, it can be hard to find people who still play their first gnome warrior or night elf priest. That gnome warrior may have become a human warrior when race changes became available, or the gnome was sent into the nether. The night elf priest may now be a worgen priest. Some people still play the first class they ever made. Others have a menagerie of alts because they love to play every class.
I myself made a gnome rogue when I first started to play WoW. My friends played Alliance, so my choices were already narrowed down. I looked over each of the races, decided that humans were too boring. The night elves resembled hippies, which didn't suit me. It came down to the dwarves and the gnomes. I looked at the gnomes first, and when I looked at a gnome rogue, I visualized what it might be like to play one. The thought of a pint-sized terror stealthily moving through the shadows, popping out and stabbing you in the knees, then vanishing again, made me laugh. A few weeks later, I created a dwarf hunter that fast became my main. My rogue is still around; he just doesn't see very much action aside from an occasional Arathi Basin match.
Do you still play the first character you ever created? Has he or she gone through a race change or even a faction change?

My first character was my undead warlock, which I still play as my main. I'm not entirely sure why I chose that race or class - I was only intending on playing the free trial a bit - but I enjoyed it enough to carry on playing intermittently. By the time I quit Dark Age of Camelot and started playing WoW as my only MMO, my warlock was in the mid 40s and it seemed silly to even consider rolling a new character. Since then, every time I come back to WoW it's always to bring my warlock back up to speed - I've played some alts and even got one as far as 80 on another server, but for whatever reason my warlock will always be my main. His first talent path was Affliction, and he remains Affliction to this day.

My first character was also a Forsaken Warlock, but I chose the race/class combo because:
a) the person that convinced me to start playing was Horde
and
b) after discussing the races and classes with him it sounded like the best fit for how I wanted things to die :D
I played for about 4 months or so (getting gang raped by bored Alliance rogues every 5 minutes) before getting so pissed that I deleted every other toon I had on that server (sending all their stuff and gold to him, I'm not stupid) and going to a brand new PvE server as Alliance. I rolled up 10 new characters, my 10th being my Main and all time favorite (she is now my 3rd slot character, I delete a lot of characters, most recently a level 70 Druid so that I could reroll him as a Worgen :p ).
My undead Warlock has since switched to a different pvp realm. He hit 58 in Vanilla, 64 in Burning Crusade, 73 in Wrath of the Lich King, and has yet to be touched in Cataclysm (too busy with my primary server's characters, raiding and getting achievements on my Warrior, gearing up my Warlock, Shaman, Hunter, Death Knight, leveling my Rogue, Mage, new Druid, and Gnome Priest. I'll probably get back to him sometime before the next expansion lol).

My first character was also a forsaken warlock but it was on the open beta so I can't really play him anymore. However in one of the following stress tests they did I made a human warlock to try it out and I felt like I identified with him better and so when the game went live I made a slightly different human warlock and he has always and will always be by main...

not only that i am playing it, it is the only one max lvl char in four years... cant imagine wow without that dwarf..

Not voting because the options are too limited, but yes, I do. A blood elf priest, I still play from time to time. His levelling took the longest also, about two and a half years till first levelcap... Which was by the time 80.

I kind of agree about the limited options. My first toon (troll mage) was my main throughout Vanilla. He saw everything from Lucifron through Huhuran before TBC came out. After he dinged 70, though, I rolled a Paladin who then became my focus for most of that expansion. She raided off and on through T5 before I took a long hiatus from the game. She was my main in WotLK.
After she dinged 85 in the first week of Cata, though, I turned my attention back to my mage. I've been focusing on him ever since.

Human combat rogue has been my main since day one. No race changes and when I went to the barber shop for the achieve, the only thing I did was to remove her nose ring.
Otherwise, she looks exactly the same as the day I rolled her except the gear.
I get invested in toons and feel guilty playing alts. It's like I'm cheating on Cally.

Ooh! This sounds like me, it's like I wrote it myself, right down to the detail of the removed nosering at the barbershop! My human combat rogue was my first character, and remains my raiding main to this day, 4 years later. She looks exactly the same as the day I rolled her. Yes I can say that I'm attached to her and sometimes think she's a person (like "tomorrow I'll buy that valor epic for Char"), and I'm not even a roleplayer

The first character i rolled was a Tauren druid, fast forward 4 years and he is still my main. I also still play my Tauren shaman regularly which was the second character i ever rolled. after those two i cycle through my various alts when they peak my interest.

Technically, my first character was a troll hunter named Drazzil (mostly Blizzard spelled backwards) but he only lasted a day or two before I rolled my longtime main (and now alt) Dalrick, my gnome rogue.

Heh. The first character I played a decent amount was a human warlock, back in vanilla in 2005. Got her all the way to level 36, which seemed like a massive feat at the time, especially when you didn't get a mount at all until 40. Say what you want about the changes making the game too easy, but when you decide to level in Desolace and you can only get there on foot? Yeah. Earlier mounts seem like a great idea. ^_^
Mortenebra Mar 15th 2011 10:21AM
Amen to that. My first character was also a human warlock! I was so stoked when I got my lesser felsteed at 40. I actually went and found out how to take screenshots so I could keep taking pictures of my pretty pony. Then came the grind for my epic felsteed. The sheer awesomeness of it was exhilarating.
Also... Felwood on a non-epic riding mount? It takes fooooooorrreeeeeeeveeeeerrrrrr.... lol I used to get excited about flight paths because it meant not having to spend 30 minutes riding from one end of a zone to another!
Alas... my warlock is now gone due to some RL mishaps. Let's just leave it at, "Crappy ex-boyfriends suck."

I started out with a Night Elf Hunter at launch and abandoned him at 70 when Lich King came out. Every other hunter was playing their toon way better than I ever could so I just quit and stuck to tanking.
But just last week, instead of considering a Rift purchase, I decided to try WoW from another perspective. I played on a pvp server, messed with a horde toon, and then I decided to give the Hunter class another try after so many years and it has been an absolute blast! Just dinged 80 in about 3-4 days. Finally looking forward to some Cata instances now.

I stopped playing my 1st char, a night elf hunter for the same reason. She was stuck at 60 for ages and then 70 :)
I know everyone disrespects hunters (or is that so 2005? :p) but I find it easier tanking or healing 25mans than playing a hunter well. :)

Years of gameplay, raid experience, and time vested with my character make me hesitant to switch, even though I might prefer another class. Some of it is nostalgia, but there's also the social history and achievement awards that cannot be ported between characters. People recognize my main's name, not my alts. I'm not doing "Long, Strange Trip," again.
If Blizzard ever makes achievements and raid history account-wide, I might consider switching, but those kind of major design changes have their own drawbacks.
So for now I stick with my main.

First character was an Undead warrior. Got him to 20 then made an Orc Hunter. Fell in love with the Hunter class, but i have since moved form that server (I started there becuase a friend played there, but when he quit wow i saw no reason to stay on a dead server).
Currently im rocking a Dwarf Hunter on the most populated EU server, and i couldnt be happier.
Necromann Mar 15th 2011 8:16AM
The first character I created on my own account is still my main.
Chad Mar 15th 2011 8:18AM
1st char is my bank mule. But, at least he's a swift hunter!
Aaron Mar 15th 2011 8:19AM
I changed him from a gnome to a dwarf, but yes I still play him and I love him muchly. =D
Telwar Mar 15th 2011 8:20AM
My dwarf paladin sits proudly at the top of my character list, and I still consider him my main.
