Encrypted Text: Customizing Power Auras for your rogue

Rogues hate unpredictability. Chance is what the others will try to stand on, and a well-prepared rogue will pull that pillar out from under them. Rogues perform at their peak efficiency when they're setting the tempo. While it may seem like chaos to the uninitiated, a veteran rogue is always in control. In order to properly manage our energy, combo points, and cooldowns, we need to stay several steps ahead of our opponents.
Our talent trees and rotations reflect our love of predictability. Aside from the occasional talent like Ruthlessness, we don't rely on chance for anything. In the past, chance has encroached on our playstyle in a few areas, but those have largely been eliminated. Cloak of Shadows and Sap are now guarantees, and we don't have to hope that we get lucky with Initiative or Vanish. Our rotation is in always our control.
In order to make good decisions, you need to have good information. As I mentioned last week, I love having information thrown at me. I can break it all down, and then make the right decisions. The issue with this strategy is that I often need to react to some event quickly. If there's a spell I need to interrupt, I make sure to plan ahead and add it to Gnosis -- that interrupt is handled. But what about other events, like losing an important buff or forgetting a key cooldown?
Enter Power Auras, the solution for the absentminded.
Power Auras is an alerting system
The basic concept of Power Auras is that it can alert you when something happens. The two key words in that sentence are "alert" and "something," as they're the two things you'll end up configuring. You set a parameter (or several), which can be almost anything, and when that's satisfied, a custom alert is triggered to let you know what happened. The design is simple, but the results are powerful. By quickly drawing your attention to only important events, you can ensure that you're never caught unprepared.
I use Power Auras for three main purposes: reminding me when I'm forgetting something, notifying me that something is available, and warning me about special abilities. My two favorite reminders are my Backstab alert and my Blade Flurry toggle. The Blade Flurry toggle displays an icon in my field of view whenever Blade Flurry is active, which helps me remember to turn it off when I'm attacking a single target. The Backstab alert displays an icon on the screen whenever my target is below 35%, which helps me to remember that I should be using Backstab instead of Mutilate. Let's walk through configuring the Backstab alert.

The first step in defining a new alert in Power Auras is to figure out when you want it to occur. I want my Backstab alert to pop up when my target is below 35%, so I choose the Health activation option, then drag the slider bar to 35%. Now, I don't want the icon to appear when my life is low, only when my target's life is low. In order to make it focus on my enemy, I only select the Enemy Target checkbox.
That's all there is to configuring this alert. I let Power Auras know that I want to see the dagger icon when my enemy target is below 35% life, I pick the cool icon I want to see, and I'm done. Here's what it looks like in action:

The last way that I use Power Auras to alert me is also one of its unique features. There are a lot of mods that can help you keep track of Slice and Dice or one of your cooldowns, but keeping track of what your enemy is up to is rare to find in an addon. Power Auras can track buffs or abilities used by your adversaries, which makes it great for avoiding key abilities.
For example, I like to know whenever my PvP opponents have used a cooldown, as I can react by using one of my cooldowns to counter. A mage's Arcane Power is one such cooldown, as it usually means some very powerful spells are going to be on their way to me shortly. The activation concept is simple, and the configuration is very similar to the Slice and Dice timer. The big difference is that I select Enemy Target again for the activation, instead of "Cast by Me." Whenever my targets gain Arcane Power, I'm alerted instantly.

You can get even more creative with your Power Auras configuration, and there's nothing wrong with adding a little flare to your UI. My only recommendation is that you keep the informational alerts small and to the side, and leave the big, centered space for really important stuff. Being quickly notified about the most important events is key, and if your screen is clogged up with tons of icons, you'll miss it.

I'm a big fan of IceHUD for a lot of these purposes, but i can see where PA has some advantages.

^ My current IceHUD setup for Sub.
Bars for Recup, Energy, SnD, Rupture and CPs at the bottom. All the most important information right there in the middle of my screen.

I love IceHUD, too. The custom bars are a great feature, and really easy to set up. I'm going to copy you and make a few more custom bars, and perhaps drop my class timer add-on.
I have already made bars to count stacks of deadly poison, and time crippling. Also, for those that don't know, you can put markers on the energy bar to let you know when you have enough for a particular ability. Mine are set for mutilate and envenom. I also set a marker at 75% of the enemy cast bar so that it is easy to wait for the last possible second to interrupt.
I've tried PA, and it is really cool and useful, but for me, IceHUD is the way to go.

I might have to try this there are some of those fights where my S&D falls off because of bad timing or w/e and sometimes i forget to put it back up, thanks for the great read im gonna def try this.

At some point addon's just become crutches and cheats imo. Power auras sounds like one to me.
You wonder where the stigma of easy-mode WoW comes from.
Saeadame Mar 16th 2011 3:48PM
Obviously Blizz doesn't think so, seeing as they added "Spell Alerts" (basically, Power Auras for some procs and abilities) into the actual game.
talkingmike Mar 16th 2011 3:53PM
Think of it this way: you are simply moving information from a place where it was more obscured to a place where it is more visible.
You can look at your own buffs to determine the time left on each of your abilities. You can glance at the unitframe of your target to determine the health remaining. You can select a unit and look at its buffs to determine if it has an existing powerup. All of this is available in the standard UI. PowerAuras and other addons really just makes it easier to notice.
You may see it as a crutch; other people see it as a way to be more effective.

For the most part, Power Auras takes what information is already available and allows you to customize how it is displayed on the screen.
fouruuus Mar 16th 2011 4:05PM
Steve_S, I respectfully disagree. I don't believe power auras are "cheating" because they don't give you any information that isn't already available to you. However, rather than scanning through 10 buffs or debuffs to find one you want or trying to guess if an enemy with 41786 out of 117675 is really below 35% or not, you can make a simple shape appear on your screen instead. This game throws A TON of info at you, and the quicker you can react to it, the better you perform.

Any time where we can get some tips on how to grow as rogues in our control of our cds and others in pvp?
Dugmet Mar 16th 2011 3:52PM
I use Power Auras for a couple of things...
01. When poison expires and I need to refresh my blades.
02. When the target health drops to 35% as a reminder to switch from mutilate to backstab
03. When my health drops to 15% -- a small image of Jesus Christ appears above my head to "save me".
Saeadame Mar 16th 2011 3:53PM
Power Auras is great =). Some characters I don't use it for much, but with the more complicated priority rotations it can be extremely helpful - particularly if you don't play that character as your main. I'm a healer main, and I find switching to a melee dps alt like trying to transplant my brain, sometimes. PA is great, since it will help me remember what I'm supposed to do when I'm going "oh god, how does this work again? You mean I have to be in melee range?!?! AHHHHH WHY DO I PLAY MELEE CLASSES GRR"
Then I get the hang of it again and remember why it's so much fun.

thaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaat is sooo cooooool
and Im not even a rogue
its really cool how you centralized the theme of rogue combat into one word/phrase: readyforanything

Good article! Power Auras are awesome for tracking buffs/debuffs in a very noticeable way. One thing about your article that isn't mentioned, but I think is important is that you can use the actual WOW icons as well as the custom ones demonstrated in your article. Now, some people might prefer a giant skull popping up with a timer for when SND is falling, but I play quite a few chars and if I don't play my rogue for a month, I might not remember exactly WTF a giant skull means any more. This is why I default to the WOW icons for most buff/debuff type Power Auras. Here is an example that anyone can import for SND:
Basic SND:
Version:4.16; icon:Ability_Rogue_SliceDice; buffname:Slice and Dice; x:146; customname:Slice and Dice; texture:54; customtex:true; combat:true; size:0.16; y:61; timer.UpdatePing:true; timer.enabled:true; timer.cents:false; timer.y:71; timer.x:136; timer.Seconds99:true
Fly over portion (happens at 5 secs left.. I use both):
Version:4.16; InvertAuraBelow:5; anim1:4; icon:Ability_Rogue_SliceDice; buffname:Slice and Dice; begin:8; x:6; customname:Slice and Dice; texture:54; speed:1.2; stacksOperator:=; customtex:true; combat:true; size:0.16; y:61

PowerAuras and NeedToKnow are my go to mods for all things indication. Between the two, I have no problem tracking everything a Rogue needs to know.
Sky Mar 16th 2011 5:47PM
Chase can you do a similar thing for Holy Pallies? As someone who is relatively new to holy pally healing, sometimes I have trouble monitoring my procs and cooldowns. Something like this would really help.
Bambislayer Mar 16th 2011 8:15PM
i stopped using poweraura's when i discovered weakaura's. does what PA can plus more. and alot simpler to set up imo
Edymnion Mar 16th 2011 9:54PM
My rogue's power aura setup is the most complex of any of my toons. At any given time I have up:
1) Slice and Dice Timer
2) Combo Points
3) Rupture Timer
4) Recuperation Timer
5) Left and Right Hand Poison Status
6) Bandit's Guile Status
7) Kick Status
8) Low HP Warning
All done up in a nice interlocking set of auras that wrap around my character so that I can see everything I need without having to look at buffs/debuffs/enemy frames/action bars. Its all right there in the middle of my screen ready to go.
Its true for GI Joe, and its true for Rogues. Knowing is Half the Battle!
ahsanali Mar 16th 2011 10:37PM
Amongst other things, I use it for combo point tracking. I draw a horde symbol in yellow, each point forming one quarter of it. The fifth point adds the rhombus in the center and makes it all go red. Love the flavor it adds to my UI!

I'm a paladin myself, but I assume it works for us as well. However, no matter how I mess with Power Auras, I can't get the damned Auras to display correctly. I want to set them up so that they display when I don't have Seal of Truth and Blessing of Kings activated, but I can't get them to only display when I don't have these buffs applied. Any chance someone could help me a bit?
Chase Christian Mar 16th 2011 11:40PM
You need to invert the Activation. There should be a checkbox that inverts the activation, so that it will show when active instead of inactive. Actually, that box is probably already checked, and you need to uncheck it. I will probably cover this in my holy paladin column next week!
