Illidan surviving the battle with Arthas was a retcon in any case. He shouldn't even have been alive for TBC. I guess being run through at the foot of the frozen throne was merely a setback.
(And having typed that paragraph, I'm suddenly sad that the last two expansions had awesome bad guys. Cataclysm has a dragon that sort of wanders around and rarely and arbitrarily kills lowbies)
