Lunch Topic: What animal should Blizzard add to the WoW bestiary?
This Breakfast Lunch Topic has been brought to you by Seed, the AOL guest writer program that brings your words to WoW Insider's pages.
The world of Azeroth is filled with creatures great and small, and a multitude of animal types are represented, both realistic and fantastic. From the beginning, we've had real-world animals such as lions, tigers, bears, ostriches, spiders, bats, hyenas, vultures, and wolves alongside mythological creatures like dragons, centaurs, werewolves, and demons. The Burning Crusade expansion added moths and wasps, dragonhawks and warp stalkers; Wrath brought in rhinoceroses, mammoths, giant worms, and minotaurs; and now, with Cataclysm, we've seen the inclusion of monkeys, mastiffs, eels, fish, sharks, and the much-anticipated fox.
Blizzard is broadening the World of Warcraft bestiary with each new expansion, but there are plenty of animal types left to draw from. How about a tamable sugar glider or a chinchilla vanity pet? Speaking of vanity pets, I'd love to see some of them turned into game mobs. Who wouldn't want to fight (or tame!) a mutant rabbit or Rodent of Unusual Size? With the addition of Vashj'ir, Blizzard has already opened the door for any number of sea creature models. How about a manta ray to join the existing whales and sea turtles?
Is your favorite animal or mythical creature represented in World of Warcraft? What would you like to see added to WoW's bestiary?

Yuck. goldfish in a bowel would be rather...
On second thought, my Undead might LIKE that one.
Faith Trust Mar 16th 2011 12:30PM
an Invisible Pink Unicorn!
Candina@WH Mar 16th 2011 12:42PM
But that is already in the game. Perhaps you are not 'pure of heart' enough to see it.
Balgus Mar 16th 2011 12:34PM
I want birds. but not just any birds. i want birds on the ground. that fly away when you run into them. can you just imagine running into a town on your horse straight into a bunch of birds and they freak out and fly away?

The Stormwind Statues would not be happy.
Xaklo Mar 16th 2011 3:13PM
Pretty sure they have those in the Worgen starting area already.

There is a shocking lack of mermaids in WoW. I guess you could include mermen as well to the list.
Noyou Mar 16th 2011 2:33PM
Naga are kind of mermaidish. Salty however and more arms then they need.
Lemons Mar 16th 2011 12:36PM
Hippos! I'm surprised there aren't in in Uldum tbh.

My face just lit up. Brilliant!

A manticore. They could basically add anything under that name so I would look forward to a surprise.
hicks Mar 16th 2011 3:36PM
Manticore Hound. Heh.

What do you think Wind Riders are?
Protip: They aren't wyverns, not by classic fantasy/mythology descriptions of wyverns.

There are already a variety of different cats available as vanity pets and while Hunters can have a mastiff I can't think of any dog vanity pets except the corehound pup which isn't really the same so that would be nice. I apologize if they exist already and I'm just not remembering them.
As for mounts I think a large bird of the non mechanical type or Kangaroo would be fun.
s.scott.staten Mar 16th 2011 1:31PM
The Perky Pug is already in game.
arixian Mar 16th 2011 1:39PM
Ah yes the perky pug I knew there had to be one but just couldn't think of it. Still given the number of cat vanity pets there's room for more dogs.
Starsmore Mar 16th 2011 1:38PM
Didn't Mastiffs get added in Cataclysm, too?
I know the Scarlet rejects in Western Plaguelands are running around with some new dog for their companions. I've killed enough of them farming Archaeology.
arixian Mar 16th 2011 1:41PM
Starsmore - yes Mastiff's were added as creatures and as hunter pets but not as vanity pets that I am aware of.
NekoDaimyo Mar 16th 2011 4:21PM
The main difference between dog in-game pets, and cats, is that all those cats work with one shared model, with different textures. Recolor the cat model, you've got a believable different breed of cat. Recolor the pug, and you've just got a weird-ass lookin' pug.
All I'm really getting at is that different dog breeds look a lot different than your average variety of cat breeds, and would each require their own model. Many dogs are also larger than your average non-combat/mini pet.
Wolfshanze Mar 16th 2011 12:41PM
A Swallow.
How else are we supposed to get our coconuts transported from Uldum to Eastern Kingdoms?
