Addon Spotlight: Never miss reputation with Auto Tabard

It's Addon Spotlight time, ladies and gentlemen. As I sit here at death's door from the terrible PAX pox with which I have so unceremoniously been bestowed, I try to eek out words and phrases, maybe a quip or two, before death's cold embrace takes me. I feel as though my short time on this earth and in this existence was worth it, however, because I got to tell you about Auto Tabard.
Saving your sanity
I have never been more upset with myself then when I forget to equip a reputation tabard in heroics. In Wrath of the Lich King, stepping into a heroic sans tabard was a horrid offense. In Cataclysm, with gearing up slightly more difficult, reputations matter. You want to squeeze every single point of reputation out of your heroic runs that you possibly can until every little green bar is topped off because, like me, you hate empty bars.
Now, with all of my Cataclysm reputations at exalted, my bag is free of tabards that would have otherwise just been taking up space (except for the Ramkahen tabard, which is clearly the best tabard). My reputation days are (sadly) over until the next big patch or content push brings me more reputations to grind. No more bars to watch, no more agonizing over how much reputation is left to go. No, I am out of this particular game -- but I bring to you my secret weapon.

Auto Tabard
Auto Tabard is a genius little utility that automatically makes sure that you have a specified reputation tabard equipped when you enter a heroic dungeon. As long as you've got the tabard in your inventory, you should be set. Install the addon, type /AT, and select what reputation you want to be earning. Simple, easy, and effective. You can select your "main" Northrend faction (Alliance Vanguard or Horde Expedition for Alliance and Horde, respectively) to disable the addon and have no tabard on. If your currently selected faction is at exalted, the addon will prompt you to choose a new tabard, so as to not waste that precious, precious reputation.

Currently, the addon only supports Wrath and Cataclysm heroics for auto-equipping tabards upon zone entrance, not the race factions/vanilla dungeons. I'd love to see those added, however, since reputation gains in the new old world are pretty important these days. Suffice to say, for players hitting Cataclysm heroics, this is a pretty effective tool for making sure you never waste a single kill's worth of reputation in your heroics. They can already be painful as it is sometimes -- why not let Auto Tabard worry about reputation for you?

_Cursor lights up my life
What's that? A second addon approaches! Before I get to the recommendation, I need to tell the story that accompanies the addon suggestion _Cursor. Sit back, relax, and laugh at my misery.
_Cursor was a staple addon in my UI for a long, long time. After some nefarious crashing or breaking or something, this little addon found its way out of the cage a
nd escaped, free to roam the wilds and leave my cursor bland and boring. Was I happy? Not really, but as addons go, you get used to them or you don't, and _Cursor's influence faded away.Smash cut to Sunday -- I am the Onyxia tank for my 10-man during the Nefarion encounter in Blackwing Descent. Our priest is nice enough to drop me a lightwell around Onyxia to facilitate easier breath healing and let my pet druid healer take some of the weight off. Well, the problem with Lightwells is that you have to click said Lightwell, and this particular Lightwell was in a very naughty place on Onyxia. My little Lightwell, font of healing prowess and lovely, happy healing energy, was under Onyxia. My cursor, however, was everywhere but near the lightwell, as Onyxia's massive frame took up a good portion of my screen, since I've got her in the corner.
Suddenly, I remembered _Cursor. After the fight, I went back and redownloaded the addon and gave it 30 seconds of configuring. I could easily track my cursor again, blue sparkles and all.
For those of you who are new to _Cursor, the addon simply attaches a mouse trail to your cursor, allowing you to easily spot where your cursor is on screen. This addon is great for helping you click Lightwells, finding your cursor in hectic fights, helping you click Lightwells, targeting and clicking during PvP, helping you click Lightwells, hitting utility bars or cooldowns, and helping you click Lightwells. There are tons of options, different types of trails and colors, but I always stick with regular old blue.
Are you the type of person who benefits from mouse trails? If so, _Cursor is for you. It saved my life, and when I move my cursor around real fast, I feel like an awesome wizard.

Quick mailbag, shall we?
Mat,
I was wondering if there is an addon I can get that would let me know if any of my totems expired or have been destroyed?
Thanks and keep up the good work,
Ed
Thanks for the email, Ed. I admittedly have not played my shaman in a good long while, but when I did, I had three different ways to track my totems.
- First, you can use a dedicated addon like TotemTimers. This addon works one very specific function: it times your totems.
- Second, you could use a cooldown timer like Sexycooldown to time your totems, as well as other shaman abilities you wish to track.
- Third, most unit frame mods have a shaman totem timer built in that you can activate. I know that SUF unit frames had a built-in bar, and I would sometimes just have that activated to check the time left on my totems.

Maybe I'm doing it wrong, but my leveling Resto Shammy heals mostly with mouse clicks and Vuhdo. I've been using _Cursor for some time. I love it! It's no fun being a Mouse Healer and losing your cursor in combat!
Yay _cursor!
Ohhh... shiny
Twonk Mar 17th 2011 2:21PM
_Curser is freaking amazing. I've been using it for a while; I never lose my pointer in raids.
It's also fun to whizz around the UI when you're idle.

Totem Timers is probably the one addon I cannot do without on my shaman.
Necromann Mar 17th 2011 2:09PM
But does it help you click on lightwells?
mischief.in.wa Mar 17th 2011 2:13PM
Oh on the subject of totems... I've also been looking for a "Someone smashed your totem" addon. So far no luck.
Dashifen Mar 17th 2011 2:27PM
If you're not using your focus frame, you could focus a totem and use an add-on like Power Auras Classic to show an aura when your focus is at zero health. Granted, it'll only work on one totem, but if you pick the important one or just assume that if one got whacked, the other three can't be that far behind, it might work out until you find a better solution.
John Mar 17th 2011 2:35PM
TotemTimers has a scrolling combat text announcement along the lines of "Searing Totem has been destroyed."
Doesn't say by what, and it gives the announcement when the totems despawn due to you going out of range as well as when they get killed. But, it's good to know.
The message is "has expired" if the totem just times out.
Badgelooter Mar 17th 2011 2:44PM
Couldn't you configure PowerAuras to notify you upon cancellation of the totems' individual buffs?
mischief.in.wa Mar 17th 2011 2:59PM
Badgelooter -- I've tried Power Auras, but I cant seem to get it to work. It's probably me.
icepyro Mar 17th 2011 6:09PM
You can specify totems in power auras. I have an icon whenever Searing totem is not up. I'm fairly sure I can make more auras to have it be a bit more intelligent, but I haven't done that yet. I'm not home or I'd paste code, but I know it can be done.
Quez Mar 17th 2011 10:05PM
I just configured my power auras for every totem I use last night.
They show up with a text aura in a nice row where I can see it on the side of my screen. They each have a timer as well. I set up an additional aura to show a glowy texture around me whenever stoneclaw shield is up. Very awesome addon. Takes a bit of messing with to get how you want it, but its worth it in the end.
I also use an aura for riptide's CD and things like blood fury and procs like tidal waves and heartsong enchant, and in enhancement, I have a 5 stack searing totem debuff that pops directly above the maelstrom alert. I love it.

"As I sit here at death's door from the terrible PAX pox with which I have so unceremoniously been bestowed"
Don't let Rossi read that, then you will never get him to come to an event :P
Joseph Smith Mar 17th 2011 2:38PM
Rossi doesn't need to hear that to be excused. Rossi does what Rossi wants!
The Dewd Mar 17th 2011 2:28PM
I suppose you could try to use something like Power Auras to let you know if you've lost a totem buff - but that could just as easily mean you outranged it or dropped the wrong totem. Some sort of hybridized version of Power Auras mated with Totem Timers would be best - if it exists.
wutsconflag Mar 17th 2011 2:43PM
Best tabard ever?
Tabard of the Shattered Sun.
Camo Mar 17th 2011 4:00PM
There is nothing like the good old Purple Illidari.
Kialla Mar 17th 2011 4:25PM
Shattered Sun tabard will always be the best! I always have it on my shammy when she's not wearing a robe texture.
Killik Mar 17th 2011 5:59PM
Illidari tabard looks great on female characters. But makes my male tauren warrior look like he's wearing a glowing green bra.
Nipah Mar 17th 2011 8:16PM
My Shaman is partial to the Earthen Ring tabard... that and whatever the one you get for having a bunch of other tabards is called... *looks it up* Tabard of the Achiever.

Otherwise, I think I always had my Kurenai tabard on before Cata.
Sir Broose Mar 17th 2011 2:48PM
I have GOT to stop reading this column before I completely overload my system with cool add-ons.
