New quests on the PTR point to legendary weapon's origin
More news, in the form of a few quests datamined from the PTR, has cropped up about the legendary staff that will be available this expansion. While we've talked about the possible links between the staff and the upcoming War of the Ancients raid, nothing had been confirmed. However, the quests seem to be pointing to something a little different.
In the quest A Legendary Engagement, players are sent to the Caverns of Time to speak to Anachronos. Anachronos is the acting "leader" of the Bronze Dragonflight in Nozdormu's absence; we first encountered him way back during the quest line to open the gates to Ahn'Qiraj. Oddly enough, it seems as though Anachronos requires your presence immediately -- something that's more than a little strange for a reclusive bronze dragon.
In the next quest, A Wrinkle in Time, Anachronos asks players to view "the future of Azeroth." This is quite possibly where the "camera bunny" mentioned in previous posts comes in -- Anachronos will give players a vision of Azeroth's future. What's interesting here is that Anachronos mentions that an event in the recent past has been obscured from his vision; whether he's talking about the same sort of time hiccups that sent Rhonin and Krasus back in time during the War of the Ancients, the Infinite Dragonflight, or something else is pretty unclear, but the implications are fascinating.
In the quest All Seeing Eye, players are asked to collect pieces so that Anachronos can construct a Timeless Eye to help him unravel the mystery of the obscured timeline. This quest requires collecting 25 Living Embers, items only available in the Firelands raid, and three Sands of Time, previously used only to construct the Vial of the Sands mount. Needless to say, this item is going to cost you a little bit of gold.
The last quest uncovered in the chain so far is On a Wing and a Prayer, which sends players with the completed Eye to Coldarra. Oddly enough, the Bronze Dragonflight discovered that the obscured vision apparently takes place over the Nexus. Now, back when that Caverns of Time caster legendary camera bunny was discovered, another camera bunny was also uncovered:
- Coldarra - Tarecgosa Intro - Camera 00
More importantly, when Malygos started the Nexus War, he was literally pulling the ley lines of Azeroth to Northrend. His actions weakened the mages of the world; this was mentioned in the Warcraft comics series when Jaina sought to create a new Council of Tirisfal. After Malygos' death, it is unclear whether those ley lines shifted back into place, whether they are still up there being used by the Blue Dragonflight, or whether they've simply begun to tear the magic of the world apart because nobody has paid any attention to them.
Regardless, the quest chain stops here, and no further information has been found. However, it's clear from the potential legendary staff video, above, that there are several iterations of the staff -- if the staff above is actually the legendary, that is. Keep in mind that the video above is just datamined information, and the staff pictured may not be the actual staff in game.
If it is real, however, we're looking at a staff like Atiesh -- one that will take more than one raid to complete. In the original formation of Atiesh, players were required to collect shards from Naxxramas-40, the head of the staff came from Kel'Thuzad, and the base of the staff required completing Ahn'Qiraj-40 to kill C'thun and retrieve the item.
Though there's no more information available, the staff, its existence, and the method of obtaining it remain a delightful mystery reminiscent of the Ashbringer.

Not all of us regularly go to MMOchamp. I appreciate that WoW.com posts it here too.
Also, do you really say things like, "Pft. CNN is so fail, the BBC already reported on that story"? Depending on what their specialty is, multiple media outlets will report on the same story, whether it's a real-world event of political upheaval or speculative news on a video game.

I want a damn legendary for my melee shammy

You don't know much about the class, do you
Iirdan Mar 17th 2011 10:45PM
Apparently you don't. Enhancement Shaman drooled over that weapon back in the day.
anbilow Mar 17th 2011 10:48PM
Give the guy a break, sure it looks really awesome and is great for e-peen, but if you saw an enhance shammie waving that around, or any two hander for that matter, he/she would most definitely not be doing it right.
Iirdan Mar 17th 2011 10:51PM
The point was that the legendary was perfectly viable for Enhancement Shaman back in the day; it was a joke. The problem is that Eldoron responded condescendingly, and also erroneously. It's never a good thing to be condescending, and even worse when it turns out that you're wrong on top of that.

You don't know much about vanilla WoW, do you?
Helston Mar 17th 2011 10:53PM
I really need to learn to hit refresh before checking out the comments.
anbilow Mar 17th 2011 11:15PM
Condescending or not, we don't really know how he meant to say that, you could be reading into a bit too much. Also, you did the exact same thing, even if it was just joke. I could quote you abut being condescending, but I'll suppress that urge.

this could be fixed by adding the word "current" in front of "melee shammy". whether this is a troll (this question has been asked many times and gotten many people angry) or a genuine question, it would be nice for another set of 1 handers for shaman/rogues/warriors/dks/MAYBE hunters if they feel like it I guess.
KingWolf14 Mar 18th 2011 2:15AM
oh leave Iirdan alone! he obviously gets offended very easily in forums, as he can obviously read the tone of someones voice via text. be wary of talking down to him! he might press caps lock and flame the whole forum down!
Eldoron Mar 18th 2011 7:20AM
Yay I win :D Okay I will ignore him in the future. Btw I wasn't trollin. And thinking that I want an item that went obsolete 5 years ago is a bit silly... That's like, "no we wont give you Shadowmourne, go get Sulfuras"...
Imnick Mar 18th 2011 9:00AM
Why enhancement shamans then over casters?
They don't have a current legendary either.
Zalvi24 Mar 17th 2011 8:40PM
just like all the other datamined info that is on this ptr will come in 4.2
Kurash Mar 17th 2011 8:50PM
Hm... Weird. The post to which I was referring is no longer here. Sorry, Zalvi24—this post wasn't intended to be a reply to you. :)
Michael Mar 17th 2011 9:06PM
Its not that they posted it from MMO champ, its that this is over a week old news and they post it now like it just was figured out
Soulhound Mar 17th 2011 8:55PM
I love how this info is here fresh ~2 weeks after it was frontpaged by mmo-champion.
Imnick Mar 17th 2011 9:13PM
I read MMO champion daily and didn't see this information about quests, so I am grateful
Salculd Mar 17th 2011 9:18PM
I've long been of the belief that this was probably going to be the expansion that gives the story of the Infinite Dragonflight's genesis. I can't help but think this might ultimately be connected to it in some capacity.
