PTR Patch 4.1: New code hints at random dungeon change

What this seems to suggest is that instead of doing one random heroic dungeon per day to gain valor points, the system will be changed so that the first 7 random heroics you do, no matter which days, will grant valor points. This is an awesome change for those of us who do not play every day and instead like to stockpile our heroic dungeoneering on the weekend.LFD_RANDOM_REWARD_EXPLANATION1 = "The first seven random dungeons of this tier that you complete each week will earn you:";
Many of us weekend warriors have been asking for this very specific change to the random dungeon "highest tier" badges/points reward system since the beginning of the random heroic system. Hopefully this wonderful change makes it to live.

Good catch!
There are two tiers of heroics on the PTR right now: the current ones in one tier and the new two in a second. This sounds intriguing!

Thanks for the reply ahsanali. Now that you mention it, I totally remeber hearing about that (haven't had time to hit the ptr this round), so I guess this means that the two tiers could remain split when it goes to live. Should be interesting to see how this plays out.

Now how about allowing us to do 175 dailies each week? They can reset daily as normal but if you miss a day you can fit a few more in on the weekend.
MrJackSauce Mar 17th 2011 10:57PM
Interesting concept. Although, I don't think I would want to do the same quest 7 times in a row.
Cephas Mar 17th 2011 11:52PM
Oh, you mean daily quests! I was really confused there for a while.
Nyold Mar 17th 2011 9:48PM
Didn't they do something like this already with the daily quests? It used to be "kill 6 titanium vanguard today" type of quests daily, which means that's the heroic of the day. They got rid of those and replaced it with "this raid boss must die this week" type of weekly quests.
I welcome this change because I'm also a casual, it's just I was surprised that they actually went through with it. To be fair, they've kinda catered to us enough :P

I think the difference between the examples you're citing is that the switch from daily dungeon to weekly raid (which I believe came about as a result of the LFD) was one that had the ability to negatively impact players, albeit indirectly: the only "negative" result was that nonraiders weren't going to get the new badges from the weekly quest, putting them behind the raiders in badge progression (mind you, they were behind to begin with)
The shift from 1 daily to 7 weeklies has even less of an effect. Yes, there will be a group of players who get all 7 dungeons done in one day, but at the end of the week everyone will still have gained the same amount of VP. It's like comparing a CD with a DoT, if both did the same amount of damage. In the long term (raid boss) it really makes no difference.
TL;DR: I don't think the new change really counts as 'catering' since the noncasuals don't lose any of their advantage over the casuals

I can see why it'd look like the weekly raid replaced the daily heroic and regular dungeon quests, but it was actually an unconnected addition that just happened to use the same quest giver. The reason the daily dungeon quests disappeared was that their rewards were rolled into the LFG system for successful completion of your first instance of the day.

That code is implemented on the PTR.
windstalker668 Mar 17th 2011 11:13PM
It would be awesome if this extended to level 80+ regular dungeons as well. I am currently leveling another toon through the 80+ content and would love to run more dungeons, but the lower ones, besides gear, just aren't worth it really. I would like th be able to gain a bit of a stockpile of JP for hen I hit 85, by that point someone should know how to play their character, especially if they have done it through dungeons.
Cephas Mar 17th 2011 11:44PM
This is how "daily dungeons" work now across the board. I logged onto my PTR level 21 hunter just to make sure.

"If anything I'd say it might be _worse_ for DPS on weekends; the more "hardcore" players who do tanking/healing might "get it out of the way" earlier in the week, leaving lots of casual dps to wonder why queues went up hours on the weekends."
That's what I meant, yeah.
Bueas Mar 18th 2011 4:04AM
Oh WoW! This seems like a great addition. I've stopped playing Wow cuz I only got like 1-2 days to play wow each week. I might come back if they do the same thing for PvP.
Bob Mar 18th 2011 5:32AM
After 70+ comments I'm honestly shocked that not even ONE person thought of the negative impact this will have on people simply seeking JP's. E.g. I just leveled a Paladin to 85 and need to get him geared. Now, in order to get bonus Justice, I'll have to run EIGHT dungeons in a row. Otherwise I just continue to bank a measly 70 VP when I could be getting 140 JP.
This is only a 'win/win' for your main. Your alt is less happy about this change. Further, not everyone actually finds the raid tier of points as a blessing. On my alt, I'd love to be able to hold shift or something when I queue an just skip the VP's. Or perhaps down-rank them or something. Since the gear is only marginally better in terms of getting Heroics done and the dungeon-only rate for gaining VP's is depressingly slow, I'm genuinely surprised that not a single person considered that particular angle.
Wolfshanze Mar 18th 2011 8:56AM
I fail to see your concern. If you're worried about not stalking up JPs because you're getting VPs instead, you fail to grasp the fact that to get VPs your running HEROICS, which means you're STILL getting 70 JP per boss you kill in a heroic. If there's an average of 4 or 5 bosses per heroic run, you're netting 280 to 350 JP per run at the same time you're getting VPs.
Bob Mar 18th 2011 8:20PM
@Wolfshanze - If you're unclear about the difference between 280 and 420, then please loan me gold. I'll do the interest calculations...
Ominous Mar 18th 2011 7:03AM
Good news.
There have been several days when I've thought I had an extra hour to finish a heroic, remembered that the hour was eaten up in difference between my actual time and the server time and that I'd just missed my window.
It doesn't happen a lot, but this will be a welcome chance.
Wolfshanze Mar 18th 2011 9:18AM
Oh, go ahead and let me down.
I thought with the opening line in your post that you were going to tell me the status of the slime pipes.
Wolfshanze Mar 18th 2011 8:21AM
So, what this means is that I don't have to make a choice to be kickin' my random heroic on Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday or Thursday... instead I can decide to be kickin' it on FRIDAY... or the next day which is Saturday, or the day after that which is Sunday. With this change, everybody’s lookin’ forward to the weekend, Partyin’, partyin’ (Yeah).
We so, so, so excited!
Dystant Mar 18th 2011 8:51AM
I'm a semi-casual and I have to say this would be AWESOME.
Most evenings I have enough time to raid, but not to raid and run a random heroic. This would help me keep up with my fellow raiders gear levels.
