The OverAchiever: The curious case of the Grey Riding Camel

The developers' strangest and most eccentric additions to the game often wind up numbering among the things that make World of Warcraft truly great, and -- fortunately for this column -- many of them are achievements as well. Today, I'd like to talk about something that, strictly speaking, is not yet an achievement. As of the most recent PTR build (13750), we know that it's going to be one in patch 4.1, and I am highly delighted that the Grey Riding Camel is now fair game for OverAchiever.
If you've followed Cataclysm zone or reputation news at all since the beta hit, you've probably known about the two camel mounts available at exalted with the Ramkahen faction. Getting them is a pretty straightforward process: Quest in Uldum, meet the kitty people, buy the kitty tabard, get the kitty people to fall in love with you -- and sooner or later, a Brown or Tan Riding Camel will result. Actually, that makes the process sound a lot more salacious than it really is, but I digress.
The Grey Riding Camel has always been different, and in order you get one, you'll engage in a little quest worthy of the zone's Indiana Jones feel. As with all Indiana Jones stories, it all starts when you find a valuable artifact after an agonizing search ...

While I've searched for my own special little camel on the live realms, I didn't think to take any pictures at the time, as it wasn't then the subject of an achievement. Consequently, we're going to abuse Wowhead liberally today, folks.
Uldum
Here's the deal: All over Uldum, Mysterious Camel Figurines spawn. They look like small gray camels, they're about the size of an average critter (which is to say tiny), and they spawn in a set pattern all over the zone. You'll always find one next to something -- a tree, a building, a grave, or random objects scattered around the scenery -- so stick to the many ruins and digsites of Uldum rather than the open desert. Fortunately, the figurines count as NPCs rather than objects, so if you make a /tar Myster macro, you can (and should) spam it while running around the zone. The addon NPCScan can also be a big help, but odds are good you'll run through a lot of camels before you get the one you need. If you're not someone who wants to spend a lot of time clearing your cache out in order to keep the mod useful, just use the target macro instead.

Once you find a figurine, right-clicking it will cause one of two things to occur:
- The vast majority of the time, you'll get Crumbled Statue Remnants. This isn't what you're after -- but hey, it's a free 25 gold from a vendor of your choice.
- Once you finally luck out, you'll find yourself helpless in a cyclone for a few seconds, and then you'll be forcibly teleported to Feralas. Don't panic.
After the teleport, you'll find yourself in the Steam Pools in southern Feralas (they're on the map between the Ruins of Isildien and the Writhing Deep, though elevated) among a huge pack of neutral camels and a not-so-neutral Dormus the Camel-Hoarder. Dormus is an ettin-type mob with 271,215 health, weak melee, and no major abilities of note with the exception of a nature damage AoE that you can simply move from. You've only got 20 minutes to kill him before he despawns, but that's plenty of time, assuming you can manage ... uh, 226 DPS. Sneezing once or twice in the direction of your keyboard should be sufficient. The Grey Riding Camel is a 100% drop off Dormus that, as of patch 4.1, will also award the achievement Scourer of the Eternal Sands. Enjoy your sweet new ride!

To clarify, is this in game now, or is this coming in the patch?
Hollow Leviathan Mar 17th 2011 6:12PM
Been in-game since first day of Cata.
Task Mar 17th 2011 6:12PM
As Allison mentioned, it's coming in the patch.
Chairman Kaga Mar 17th 2011 6:13PM
The camel is currently on live, but not the achievement.
One presumes it will be retroactively awarded.
tgrhwke Mar 17th 2011 6:14PM
The figurines and the camel mount have been in the game since the expansion's release. The new achievement for getting one is what is being added in 4.1.
Eli Mar 17th 2011 6:17PM
The figurines and mount are already in game.
The achievement is coming with the patch.
Ryan Mar 17th 2011 6:21PM
The MOUNT is in the game, the ACHIEVEMENT and title are in the patch
Task Mar 17th 2011 6:25PM
I stand corrected, but Jfolfa, you should have asked if it was about the achievement or the camel itself.
Wilk Mar 17th 2011 6:23PM
The achievement is coming in 4.1. The figurine, mini-adventure and mount already exist in live realms.
Ruth Mar 17th 2011 9:05PM
Yes Task, blame the other person. It's totally not your fault because you assumed something.
Task Mar 17th 2011 6:10PM
Ahh the camel, the horse of the desert, and will now be known for it's toothy grin, as seen above in the pic above for the article header.
Very nice pic by the way, Allison. = ]

NOOooOOOooo! Shhhhh! Don't tell. I've been hunting for this thing and have only found ONE stinking figurine so far. Now EVERYONE will be looking. ;-p
I kid. I can share. I have made my sacrifices to the RNG gods, all will be well.

Lol you and me both. I've spent about 3 hours searching and found . Not a horrible amount of time.
Tri Mar 17th 2011 6:14PM
I believe it is in game. The only thing coming with the patch is the actual achivement for getting this camel :)
Scott Mar 17th 2011 6:19PM
Strange... MMO-Champion has this listed as a Feat of Strength in 4.1, not an achievement... Might this mean that the Dormus is actually being REMOVED from the game in the patch, or is it just a typo?
Pow Mar 17th 2011 6:23PM
Dormus isn't going anywyhere. The only reason it's a FoS is because it is a massive, stars-and-planets-are-correctly-aligned type of luck-based achievement. Any point value, however small, would just be cruel.
Sleutel Mar 17th 2011 6:49PM
Quite a few hard achievements start as Feats of Strength instead of being moved there when they became deprecated. Being a FOS doesn't necessarily mean that something is no longer achievable--just that it's hard to get and doesn't count toward your total Achievement Points.
I have 39 Feats of Strength on my main. Out of those, only 11 started as regular achievements. The other 28, regardless of whether they're still attainable, were always classified as a FOS.

Maybe the promise of an achievement and title for the "Time-Lost Proto Drake of Cataclysm" will take a little of the camping pressure off the actual TLPD that still eludes me after more than 2 years? No? Didn't think so. :(

Great article! I've started the hunt for this guy, as well. An interesting fact: There are 2 different types of Camel Figurines; One that is the dud, and the other that ports you up to Feralas. This is apparent on WoWhead by seeing that the second item id (50409) includes the cyclone effect to teleport you. So, in my opinion, enlisting NPC scan's help is actually a great idea, since you can put in the 'active' Camel Figurine id and search for it. No need to empty the cache when it only pops to yield your mount.

If you can understand what this guy is saying, you'll understand the genius of it.
Thank you, sir. Appreciate.
