The OverAchiever: The curious case of the Grey Riding Camel

The developers' strangest and most eccentric additions to the game often wind up numbering among the things that make World of Warcraft truly great, and -- fortunately for this column -- many of them are achievements as well. Today, I'd like to talk about something that, strictly speaking, is not yet an achievement. As of the most recent PTR build (13750), we know that it's going to be one in patch 4.1, and I am highly delighted that the Grey Riding Camel is now fair game for OverAchiever.
If you've followed Cataclysm zone or reputation news at all since the beta hit, you've probably known about the two camel mounts available at exalted with the Ramkahen faction. Getting them is a pretty straightforward process: Quest in Uldum, meet the kitty people, buy the kitty tabard, get the kitty people to fall in love with you -- and sooner or later, a Brown or Tan Riding Camel will result. Actually, that makes the process sound a lot more salacious than it really is, but I digress.
The Grey Riding Camel has always been different, and in order you get one, you'll engage in a little quest worthy of the zone's Indiana Jones feel. As with all Indiana Jones stories, it all starts when you find a valuable artifact after an agonizing search ...

While I've searched for my own special little camel on the live realms, I didn't think to take any pictures at the time, as it wasn't then the subject of an achievement. Consequently, we're going to abuse Wowhead liberally today, folks.
Uldum
Here's the deal: All over Uldum, Mysterious Camel Figurines spawn. They look like small gray camels, they're about the size of an average critter (which is to say tiny), and they spawn in a set pattern all over the zone. You'll always find one next to something -- a tree, a building, a grave, or random objects scattered around the scenery -- so stick to the many ruins and digsites of Uldum rather than the open desert. Fortunately, the figurines count as NPCs rather than objects, so if you make a /tar Myster macro, you can (and should) spam it while running around the zone. The addon NPCScan can also be a big help, but odds are good you'll run through a lot of camels before you get the one you need. If you're not someone who wants to spend a lot of time clearing your cache out in order to keep the mod useful, just use the target macro instead.

Once you find a figurine, right-clicking it will cause one of two things to occur:
- The vast majority of the time, you'll get Crumbled Statue Remnants. This isn't what you're after -- but hey, it's a free 25 gold from a vendor of your choice.
- Once you finally luck out, you'll find yourself helpless in a cyclone for a few seconds, and then you'll be forcibly teleported to Feralas. Don't panic.
After the teleport, you'll find yourself in the Steam Pools in southern Feralas (they're on the map between the Ruins of Isildien and the Writhing Deep, though elevated) among a huge pack of neutral camels and a not-so-neutral Dormus the Camel-Hoarder. Dormus is an ettin-type mob with 271,215 health, weak melee, and no major abilities of note with the exception of a nature damage AoE that you can simply move from. You've only got 20 minutes to kill him before he despawns, but that's plenty of time, assuming you can manage ... uh, 226 DPS. Sneezing once or twice in the direction of your keyboard should be sufficient. The Grey Riding Camel is a 100% drop off Dormus that, as of patch 4.1, will also award the achievement Scourer of the Eternal Sands. Enjoy your sweet new ride!

Brilliant, saw that comment on wowhead and was coming to wow insider to check if it meant what I thought it did...no more trawling the desert with a macro =D

Just to clarify, If I do this prior to the patch do i get the achievement retroactively? I would presume though.
Don't really matter if my past record is anything to go by I'll happen upon the required gubbins when we're all level 105

I think so too...
And I got him on my first statue that I wasn't looking for to begin with. GG NPCScan, GG.
Maribel Mar 17th 2011 8:35PM
It's a *camel.* Anything else would be unrealistic.
Rob Mar 17th 2011 8:38PM
It could have laser beams... just saying.

Good luck. 6 toons to 85, every one through all of uldum, and not even one mysterious camel figurine. Plus my druid herbalist was parked in uldum for 'The Great Whiptail Rush of 2011" and spent a good amount of time farming herbs and didn't see one.

Bejamin Button has nothing on this curious case

I was on my paladin alt just roaming around, about 5 minutes before server shutdown when my NPC scan went off. Checked it out and had seen the figurine, had never heard of it before but decided to click it and was lifted up in a tornado, went to a loading screen and suddenly I was in feralas, with ugly looking at me. Killed him just before server went down. (Super easy fight btw) then looted my camel. Server reset, and I logged back in at the same spot, killed him again and looted a second one. Second one is useless but I do have 2! :D

Is it possible to just sit at the steam pools and way for someone else to find the camel? or is the mob only visible for the person who finds it?
phaedra Mar 18th 2011 4:02PM
Jeancy - the quest mob is phased. Even if you go to Feralas where he'd be, you won't be able to see him.
Got my camel without even meaning to. Was killing the sheep in Uldum for Critter Killer when my NPC scan pinged (still haven't gotten a single BC rare). Flew around looking for that dang camel statue forever (they are TEENY TINY). Found it, clicked on it, and freaked out when I the cyclone came. Luckily, the Camel Hoarder is super easy to kill. And I'm not even a mount collector.
Then, a few days later, found a second statue in the same spot. Called a guildie in, thinking all camel statues transported you out. Nope - his turned to dust.

a couple of months ago i was flying through uldum to get to an arch digsite and npcscan popped. i barely knew anything about the figurine, and i had no idea you could find fake figures so i flew down and sniped it from a worgen and got teleported to horgus. until i read this article i had no idea just how rare it's meant to be. :D
the only problem with this is that nobody can tell the difference between it and the ramkahen camels. >:
cmoritz1 Mar 18th 2011 1:29AM
no it only works if u find the camel, and yeah I know kinda depressing just a pallet change. Would have been nice to have it be an armored camel or something.
beltrebeltrebeltre Mar 18th 2011 4:59AM
NPCscan. The only figurine I found, I NEVER would've seen without NPCscan. Thing was tiny, next to a tree and hidden by the fronds of a nearby plant. Not saying you won't ever stumble upon one by happenstance, but, if you are actively searching these out without NPCscan, you are doing it wrong. they can be targeted also, so macro "/target mysterious camel figurine" works. good luck

Speaking of camels, how hard would it be for Blizz to add a two-hump (ie: two-seat) camel for Cat?
I mean, they have three-seat mammoths for WotLK, why not a measly two-seat camel for Cat?
