The Light and How to Swing It: Gearing your tankadin for heroics

Every week, WoW Insider brings you The Light and How to Swing It for holy, protection and retribution paladins. Protection specialist Matt Walsh spends most of his time receiving concussions for the benefit of 24 other people, obsessing over his hair (a blood elf racial!), and maintaining the tankadin-focused blog Righteous Defense.
So you've dinged level 85, and you're on the cusp of the elusive endgame. Now come the first steps of your progression as counted in ilevels rather than actual levels. For a fresh tankadin hitting heroics for the first time, you're going to find it a more difficult jump than back in Wrath when all you needed to tank heroics successfully was some moxie, whatever random quest gear you accumulated along the way to 80, and 535 defense. (I'm building this up, but it's really not that bad.)
In any case, in this article I'm not going to specifically say "get pieces X, Y, and Z," because tanking is about tailoring your gear to a current situation. So while one piece might be amazing for two kinds of scenarios, it could be subpar for others, and I'd like to stress keeping a wide range of gear available so you can mix and match as needed. As such, I'm going to use this space to tell you what pieces are available where and recommend stats you'll profit from -- in essense, give you a fishing rod rather than the fish.

As such, I'm going to use this space to tell you what pieces are available where and recommend stats you'll profit from -- in essense, give you a fishing rod rather than the fish.
Then once I'm blue in the face and finally done blathering about stats, I'll detail what pieces can be nabbed from four easy sources: quests, factions, crafters, and the justice point vendor. Like I said, I'm going to avoid the Letterman-style Top 10 list, though, because your mileage with regards to the value of each piece may vary.
What stats to look for
Don't worry about strength when looking at gear and comparing two different pieces. As I detailed in Protection Paladin 101, strength is one of our weaker threat stats (hit and expertise are far better, but more than that on a bit) and shouldn't be a focal point.
Likewise, stamina -- while key -- isn't as important as it was in previous expansion packs. The name of the game is damage reduction, once you have enough hitpoints. While it's a little tricky determining how many is enough, in my case, I found myself breathing easy at 150k buffed when I first started running heroics. At that point, you shouldn't have to worry about getting gibbed within a couple of GCDs, outside of failing to interrupt something key or standing in something unpleasant.
So instead of inflating your health bar, you're going to find yourself getting a bigger return from mastery -- our bread and butter right now in all but heroic raiding content. Mastery provides the largest amount of combat table coverage (also known as CTC) per point out of all our other stats that affect the combat table. For example, 179.2 mastery rating gives you a 2.25% chance to block, while 176.7 parry rating is going to give you a 1% chance to parry. You're going to push normal hits off the combat table much, much faster adding mastery than adding any avoidance stat.
In terms of gear, that means you're going to find the pieces that provide you with the biggest survivability boost are going to have mastery plus either dodge or parry. Gem slots help too, but those are few and far between until ilevel 346.
Hit and expertise are going to present a bit of a challenge for you, in terms of balancing them in order to have enough threat while at the same time not shooting yourself in the foot by sacrificing too much survivability. Entering heroics for the first time, you're probably going to find your threat capacities inadequate compared to those who have been running heroics (and even raids) already and therefore have a higher threat potential than you might be able to cope with.
Thankfully, unlike raids, in which we generally endeavor to ignore threat stats and stack survivability like our lives depend on it, in heroics, we're given a lot more leeway. You can add some hit or expertise without feeling like you're putting your life at risk. Though in terms of hit, keep in mind you don't need to go all the way to the 8% raid boss hit cap. The most you'll need for heroics is 6%, since bosses are level 87. Going beyond that is wasted stats. Likewise, you don't want to stack more than 16 additional expertise skill (or 480 rating), because we get 10 skill for free from the Glyph of Seal of Truth.
In terms of our priorities for threat, the expertise cap (24 skill) is the best initial way to boost your threat, followed by the hit cap (just 6% for heroics). (Correction: Thanks to a commenter for catching my initial error, the expertise cap for both dodges and parries is only 24 skill total.)
Questing for upgrades
Not always ilevel 333 (and thus upgrades probably abound), but gear from the later quests in Uldum and Twilight Highlands represent the easiest pickups you'll find for your pre-heroics set. Be sure to take advantage of these, since you can collect them on your own.
- Pharoah's Burial Spaulders from the Uldum quest Harrison Jones and the Temple of Uldum
- Breastplate of the Witness from the Twilight Highlands quest Closing a Dark Chapter
- Gloves of Gnomebliteration from the Uldum quest Gnomebliteration
- Ramkahen Front Boots from the Uldum quest The Source of their Power
- Twilight Mirrorshield / Truthbreaker Shield from the Twilight Highlands quests Traitor's Bait (for Horde) and A Villain Unmasked (for Alliance)
- Dragonscorn Mace / Mace of the Gullet from Narkrall, the Drake-Tamer (for Alliance) and Fury Unbound (for Horde)
- Za'brox's Lucky Tooth from the Twilight Highlands quest Four Heads are Better than None
- Blackblood Freedom Standard / Shore-Cleansing Standard from the Twilight Highlands quests Insurrection (for Horde) and Landgrab (for Alliance)
Make use of your reputations
While you're running normal 5-mans for gear and justice points, don't forget to strap on that reputation tabard. The various factions have some great pieces that can last you a long time, not to mention the easiest way to get your first tanking epics.
Guardians of Hyjal
Honored Mountain's Mouth
Exalted Wrap of the Great Turtle
The Earthen Ring
Honored Stone-Wrapped Greaves
Therazane
Revered Felsen's Ring of Resolve
Ramkahen
Revered Red Rock Band
Exalted Sandguard Bracers
Dragonmaw / Wildhammer
Revered Grinning Fang Helm / Crown of Wings
Exalted Boots of the Sullen Rock / Gryphon Rider's Boots
Hellscream's Reach / Baradin Wardens
Honored Baradin Grunt's Talisman / Baradin Footman's Tags

Be crafty
Trawling the auction house and trade chat (or some helpful guildmates) can yield some of these excellent pieces.
- Elementium Guardian
- Hardened Elementium Hauberk
- Hardened Elementium Girdle
- Notched Jawbone
- Elementium Moebius Band
- Elementium Earthguard
Spend those justice points
Last but certainly not least, don't forget to spend those hard-earned justice points on these great pieces and avoid that 4k cap. These are the pieces that'll be carrying you into your first raids, more or less, and will probably take the longest to accumulate in the end.
- Helm of the Proud 2,200 JP
- The Lustrous Eye 1,250 JP
- Sunburnt Pauldrons 1,650 JP
- Chestplate of the Steadfast 2,200 JP
- Numbing Handguards 1,650 JP
- Girdle of the Mountains 1,650 JP
- Greaves of Splendor 2,200 JP
- Shield of the Four Grey Towers 950 JP
Heroics are just the beginning
Once you're ready to start the heroics grind, you're only a hop, skip, and a jump away from being raid-ready. Next week, I'll give an overview of heroics loot and how it'll have you plated to the gills and ready for some serious face time with some epic boss crotch.

You missed a couple. The Acorn of the Daughter Tree is better than both the Mountain's Mouth and Elementium Guardian thanks to the Mastery and the Agility>Dodge conversion, and the Haste can/should/must be reforged. However, it's on par with the JP neck if you're "uncomfortable" wearing something with Agility.
Likewise, the Signet of the Elder Councel, a ring for being Exalted with the Earthen Ring is better than any other ring you can get pre-raid, right alongside the VP one.
Rhidach Mar 18th 2011 5:25PM
Oh yeah, I agree about the viability (and depending on your goal, superiority of agility tanking pieces) but I'm saving that for a later column when I go more into agility gear for tanking and combat table coverage.
Bonasus Mar 19th 2011 5:43AM
Don't forget about offensive plate items with mastery. If you reforge the other secondary stat to dodge or parry, it's usually even better than a defensive item of the same iLvl without mastery . So you should consider, adding at least http://www.wowhead.com/item=62384 and http://www.wowhead.com/item=67238 to the list.

As long as you don't go stealing agility pieces from agility users. Otherwise I'm gonna have to buy Vili that plane ticket Rhi.... And in the vein of agility pieces (though this would be for your next article), I had a friend telling me that Tia's Grace simmed better than Throngus' Finger. Any ideas if it's better?

I may be wrong... but isn't this a bit late? Do we have a pally writer on staff or are the other columnist taking turns when they have a spare moment?
Roaana@Eonar-US Mar 30th 2011 4:24PM
It might seem like a rehash of the tankadin pre-raid gear list, but it is taking into account the 4.0.6 changes to stat preference as well as 333 ilvl gear.
However, I don't think the proposed article for next week will offer anything past the prepaid gear list. I would prefer to see some tankadin utility tips - what can and should we do that others can't, and what encounters do those things come handy in (heroics and raids both). We have more taunts, ranged attacks, aoe, and arguably cooldowns than other tanks. How do we prioritize all of the tools in those toolboxes, given a limited encounter time?
(I know the answers to most of those, but I wouldn't mind reading about them to/from work anyway!)

Rhidach is the new "awesomesauce bass source of grand info" tankadin columnist. It may take him a few articles but he will most likely move past this intro stuff soon. Give him a bit. We didn't have anything for prot before but now we have something.
Kar Mar 18th 2011 6:13PM
And thank you autocorrect for thinking badass is a reference to a fish.
M Mar 20th 2011 10:19AM
I think they were without a prot writer for so long, that now that they have found one (and a fantastic one at that) that there's a lot of catching up to do.
Boobah Mar 18th 2011 5:33PM
"In terms of our priorities for threat, the expertise soft cap (26 skill) is the best initial way to boost your threat... You could go further than that and seek out the hard expertise cap "
For heroics, the expertise cap is 24. And there is no 'soft' cap; 24 expertise will eliminate all dodges AND parries for non-raid boss mobs, assuming you're at the level cap.
Rhidach Mar 18th 2011 5:47PM
Bah, I remember to scale down hit for level 87 mobs and forget to do the same for expertise. Thanks for catching that, I'll be correcting it momentarily.

My wife plays a healer and is constantly complaining about the lack of good tanks out there, so its fallen upon my shoulders to sacrifice my beloved Retribution spec for the ways of Meat Shielding. This post will definitely help me start off in the right direction - Thanks!
nieboh Mar 18th 2011 7:33PM
So, I've dusted off the paladin and am currently in the process of leveling (just hit 83). This guide is timely and relevant to me. Thank you!
I'm currently dual specced protection and retribution, but for now I wouldn't dare risk the welfare of 4 strangers on my novice tanking skill and pathetic gear. I'll run as retribution until I can get my hands on these pieces. But, thanks to this article, at least I know what I'm aiming for and where to look instead of just stumbling around in the dark.
Dave Williams Mar 18th 2011 11:01PM
What am I missing, here? I'm at 349 iLevel, but I'm only at 136k unbuffed HP. "Quit when you get to 150k"? Ummm... I'm not really anywhere close and I got a whole bunch of strong tanking gear.
Shrikesnest Mar 20th 2011 1:54PM
150k *buffed*. Blessing of Kings + Prayer of Fortitude/Commanding Shout
Hal Mar 19th 2011 12:45AM
It's a week early, but I'll ask it now anyhow: What do you like for heroic trinkets? Are the current selection of tank trinkets suitable, or does the love given to agility by some of the above commenters extend to trinkets as well? What about DPS trinkets that might mix well (Strength + Mastery, for example)?
I'm currently wearing Leaden Despair and Porcelain Crab, with Heart of Thunder taking up bag space because I hate on-use health effects. I'm looking to grab Throngus' Finger, though.
zubbiefish Mar 19th 2011 8:41AM
I, for one, am glad to see this. My paladin is holy, and I'm a bit torn on an off spec. Looking at this makes persuing Protection a less daunitng option.
SamLowry Mar 19th 2011 11:26AM
My, you must be a highly impressive tank if you can go directly from dinging 85 to entering heroics.
This article seems to completely ignore what gear you need just to tank regular dungeons, which is where my retadin has been stuck ever since dinging 85. Heroics are apparently something casuals only get to visit during the mature phase of an expansion, and actually entering a raid, if only to do the weekly, is something that comes at the very end, right before the next expansion drops, if the history of Wrath is an indicator.
Bitter, I? What would make you think that? Just because I appear to be the only member of my guild who hasn't suspended his account until the game gets easier to play?
Dharmabhum Mar 19th 2011 6:48PM
It is quite possible to get into heroics right after dinging 85. Just about all of the useful quest rewards from late Uldum and Twilight Highlands will get you geared up in ~333 and one might also have some JP saved to buy a piece or two upon dinging. With craftable gear available as well, heroics are just a small jump away from that last ding of this xpac... by ilvl of course. Difficulty and knowledge and awareness not included.
Shrikesnest Mar 20th 2011 1:56PM
Check out the Hardened Obsidium gear that Blacksmiths can make. The whole set isn't super expensive, and combined with a couple of quest rewards it'll be basically all you need to run regular dungeons.
