The ability to place buy orders on the auction house would be amazing but I doubt we'll see it unless they completely revamp the system. That's actually one of the things EVE Online did well with it's economy.
As for historic prices, I think it would actually benefit even casual players. It would make the market a bit more fair for those who are currently clueless about the price they should expect to pay or ask for a certain item. It wouldn't completely eliminate good deals on the auction house as there's always room for undercutting and price wars.
