With WoW shrinking, BattleGroup transactions are perhaps the last thing needed to avoid or at least delay server consolidations. Well, maybe also LFG for raids but Blizzard is resisting that.
Currently, your LFD experience is the same regardless of which realm of the battlegroup you are on. Same for your BG. But a small server may not have 6000 glyphs and several pages of trugold on their AH.
Buy orders also reduce the impact of bots on the AH. The current system is designed to reward people the more often they scan the AH for deals. Which leads some taking it to the extreme of against-the-TOS automation
