The last build rolled out on the patch 4.1 PTR introduced
some cool new items, but Blizzard wasn't done there. The build rolled out today included even more! These items include:
Technically, the turtle shell was in the last build, but we misinterpreted the item when we saw it on Wowhead. Our initial guess was that it would be a drop in Firelands due to a display bug giving it the heroic label, and we assumed its itemization was unfinished. However, we eventually came to the conclusion that it's extremely likely that the shield is actually an archaeology award -- it's bind on account. It will lose its current heroic label between now and when the patch launches.
These items are continuing Blizzard's effort to
populate neglected research types. Trolls needed a little more love beyond the endless journey to find Zin'rokh, and fossils needed even
more love. An epic shield, another pet, and the other additions from previous builds will go a long way toward making fossil dig sites less ... painful.

Blizzard often copies items, and changes the name. That's why holiday boss loot is usually a copy of a preexisting item. They just copy it, and change the name. It's also why the low-level rings from the random dungeon bags were selling for 1g 31s awhile back, They copied a higher level ring, adjusted the stats and name, and forgot to remove the sell price from the previous ring.
So that shield is probably a reuse of anoher shield, which drops from a Heroic instance, and they just haven't removed the "Heroic" tag off it yet.

Was a screenshot of a turtle boss in one of the previews, likely an Edge of Madness summon one.

Yup, I know. I can certainly farm up the maximum fragments for each of the races with new stuff though :) Then I get to have fun solving a bunch of items on patch day.

Like I've said before, I think its great they're adding these much needed artifacts, I'm just a little bitter that its after the HUNDREDS of solves for Trolls and Fossil fragments that I've done. Still no sword too :'-(

I swear, I said "Yay!" out loud as soon as I saw the title to this article. Even before I knew what the items were. ^_^
But it's always good to see archaeology getting more love. I've nearly got my archaeologist character to 85, which means I'll have plenty to do leveling up that profession as I wait in dungeon queues. :P Pity that tanking's not for me, though; that new shield seems like it'd be useful. Maybe there's hope for a caster shield...

I'm still farming for the fossil mount. I did take a 2 week break, but I am at a loss for fossil sites.

Try Eastern Kingdoms. I think about 33% of the sites there are Fossil.

i have a zin rokh myself much to the annoyance of quite a few of my guild members... i currently have no character able tyo use it so its gathering dust
