Breakfast Topic: What do you listen to while you play WoW?
Your listening music for today's Breakfast Topic shall be A Whole New World from Disney's Aladdin. Rake in the nostalgia.
I grew up eagerly anticipating the latest Disney animated film. The first movie I can recall seeing in theaters was Hunchback of Notre Dame. The music has always stuck with me, and to this day, I have an extensive Disney music collection -- from the Oscar winners (Beauty and the Beast, A Whole New World) to the lesser known but still powerful (Hellfire/Heaven's Light), I've got most every song to come out of that studio. And when I play WoW, that playlist is on an infinite loop.
The in-game music has matured with the game, and the tracks introduced with Cataclysm are incredibly powerful and impacting. When the Shattering login music leaked, universal praise was given to the track, with many people -- myself included -- looping the 12-minute masterpiece for a good while.
And yet, despite the excellent default tracks, many people -- again, myself included -- choose to mute the sound of the music and replace it with a soundtrack of their own choosing. You can tell a lot about the way people game based on the music they listen to. Immersion gamers tend to listen to the default sounds, while more competitive types may replace it for a more high-energy sound.
What music graces your ears as you play, and what does it say about you?

Since Cataclysm, I've had the game music on to hear all the new stuff. But in the past, especially for leveling alts, I've broken up the monotony of the Vanilla music with a series of playlists that correspond to differently-themed areas of the world. Upon entering a "new" zone/continent, I'll flick to iTunes and change the music to something that fits. For example:
Dim, wooded areas like Tirisfal Glades/Silverpine/Duskwood: soundtracks from The Village and Lady in the Water.
The Barrens: soundtrack from Blood Diamond and tracks from Jurassic Park/The Lost World.
Usually I also have other select pieces thrown in from other soundtracks, like Pan's Labyrinth, Myst III: Exile, Lord of the Rings, Avatar, Dinosaur, even a few from Lost :P

Zeppelin, the stones and other artists from the 60's/70's if I am listing to anything at all.

Nothing. Not even the WoW music. If I have music on while I'm trying to heal a dungeon, I can't concentrate. Questing is a bit different... but meh.

My wife frowning ( yes it is audible ).

Well, it depends. I really love the WoW music, as many pointed out it gives that feeling and ambience. Usually when I'm questing I let the music flow... you know, to get the feeling that's intended to. But when it comes down to PvP I put on some metal: Moonspell, IronMaiden, BlindGuardian, Battlelore, Finntroll... you know, the usual. Sometimes, just sooooooometimes I put Summoning or The Soil Bleeds Black when I'm questing, but I never put music on dungeons. Too much air guitaring and air drumming gets me killed, or the tank.

Wait, he also does Yasmin's voice?

I'm an Elton John fan, so lots of live Elton lives on my playlist. But last night when I was wiping repeatedly in Halls of Origination (4 of us were friends, one awful pugger was wiping us) I put a live version of Walk Like An Egyptian on from YouTube. Yep, I'm a music/soundtrack wiseass.
Later when I'm on my worgen doing the CSI quests, I'll probably have Warren Zevon's "Werewolves of London" on at least once.
Usually I just plug in my iPhone and let iTunes play music from it on my speakers/headset.
Don't usually play music while raiding because Vent doesn't mute other sounds when someone is talking -- any way to do that?

Christian Rock-Christian Metal. Can't get enough of Skillet and Disciple. Been listening to a station out of Orlando called the Rock HD. I'm either listening to that and annoying my guild mates by posting lyrics on the chat or hanging out in vent.

Most of the time, the in-game wow music looping. The Wrath soundtrack is still my favorite, and sometimes I'll turn off game sound and listen to Wrath. Lately I've been sometimes playing Zac Brown Band or Train, or maybe an artist (usually country or pop) that I haven't listened to in a while. I work from home and sometimes don't have anything to do, so I can get several hours of wow play time in, for better or for worse...

Pretty much that, else the in game music.

I listen to the in game music and sounds, but I have to have something else in the background, usually the TV. Call it ADD or what have you, but I just can't focus on one thing fully at a time.
thekwickone_2006 Mar 26th 2011 11:39AM
I usually only listen to the in game music. That's how I started playing the game and it would just be weird without it now.
If there ever was a reason that I would listen to something else it would have to be Queen. Im a pretty die hard Freddie Mercury fan.
Thomas Higgins Mar 26th 2011 2:25PM
Good call. Queen rocks. The Fredster is undoubtedly the best frontman any British rock group has ever had, and he has some awesome competition.

Unless I'm doing something really mundane like archeology for extended periods of time, I mute everything that isn't important. No music, embedded or otherwise. No television. No distractions.
Given, about the only time I log on anymore is if there's a raid to attend.
Fatherskull Mar 26th 2011 11:46AM
Pandora: stations I normally use are "Cake", "Stephen Lynch", and "Da Vinci's Notebook". While raiding I'm normally trying to listen to my raid leader while my wife is complaining about having to lead the rag-tag B-team raid.
I haven't listened to the in-game music in years, vanilla music got old fast. I'm gonna have to try going back to it since everyone seems to love it so much.

Dethklok. It is physically impossible to not kick ass while Hatredcopter is playing.
