Once upon a time, the boats of Azeroth were decidedly unsafe. They would spontaneously disappear, stranding boatloads of players in the ocean. Within moments, fatigue would claim the lives of these player characters. As a temporary solution, Blizzard dropped Captain Paceholder on the shores of Menethil. The good captain would simply teleport you from Eastern Kingdoms to Kalimdor.
When the boats were fixed, Captain Placeholder was removed. His brief stay in Azeroth deeply touched all of us. This deep longing for our old friend led to the creation of The Lament of Captain Placeholder. Eledainn penned the words, and Cranius made the music.
This lament is still one of the finest WoW songs out there. It's playful, poetic, and excellently performed. Even if you don't know or care about Captain Placeholder, hopefully you can enjoy the song. Interested in the wide world of machinima? We have new movies every weekday here on WoW Moviewatch! Not sure about that, I saw it here long, long ago, with a different singer. The description credits Eledainn as the writer of the song, not Cranius. Granted you can't believe everything you read on the internet, but I'd still say Cranius covered the song.
edit: Reading the description on this particular video, Cranius credits Eledainn also, stating that this is a cover.
Quote: "Eledainn, Night Elf Priest of Graystar, penned this song, "The Lament of Captain Placeholder", so that we would never forget. This is my rendition of that great song. I dedicate this rendition to mariners everywhere."
I heard hints that Captain Placeholder was actually going to be in Cataclysm, as he was spotted some time in the late alpha to early beta... what ever happened to that?
This sort of begs the question: What would you consider captain placeholder? He ports people around, so you could consider him a mage/warlock, but his holy-looking spells make him out to be a priest/paladin, although as a sort of naval captain he could be regarded as a rogue/warrior...

One of Cranius's "home runs." Great machinima, and great musicality.

There was only one problem with the captain:
For a while, he was pvp flagged.

Actually, he's in Azshara now. You can find him somewhere along the goblin racetrack.

Alpha/Beta = testing
Testing = placeholders.
Placeholders = Captain Placeholder for instance.

I was a little ticked that when they brought him back, he was Horde-aligned.
Moeru Mar 29th 2011 12:39PM
Step One: Roll a human toon and name him 'Placeholder' and get him high enough to get all the the pieces of the outfit.
Step Two: Make a guild called 'Boat Operator'.
Step Three: Get 'Captain' title.
Step Four: Stand on Menethil Pier.
Step Five: Win at WoW.

In terms of actually equipment I'd take the safe route and do pally/warrior (though most of it looks like cloth).

Bah stupid comment system

Clearly, the Captain is some sort of hero class.
pearsontech Mar 29th 2011 12:58PM
The song has a sort of Puff the Magic Dragon feel to it don't ya think?
ladygamertn Mar 29th 2011 2:36PM
Kinda like a troubadour might sing of ancient heroes and legendary feats... yeah, brings a tear to the eye.

The chord sequence isn't identical, but I can hear the resemblance there.

I wonder if he is related to Biff the Understudy.

This is an excellent song lamenting the removal of a NPC placed in the game to temporarily make up for bad coding.
... I love the WoW community.

Does anyone else think Cranius sounds like the lead singer of 'Great Big Sea'? ._. I do.
