Breakfast Topic: How did you like our April Fools' Day joke?

But this year just took the cake. I can't tell you how proud I am of the entire team for working so hard to pull it off. From our columnists to our editors, we all worked so incredibly hard, and I'm sure if you were watching the site yesterday, you have to agree: It paid off. This was most definitely our best April Fools' Day joke of all time.
So here's my question: What did you think of our joke this year? What was your favorite moment? I'd share mine, but it was all so amazing, that picking just one thing would be a total Sophie's Choice.

Um down rating because you don't agree with the poster is not what its for. The breakfast topic asked our opinion, and bond shared his. There is nothing wrong with that.

Agreed - better this year. This site has a history of getting a bit carried away with April Fools Day and carrying on just a little bit beyond it being funny. Hello Kitty Insider I am looking at you...

@Eros: And what's wrong with downrating an opinion you disagree with? I downrated Bond's comment *because* I disagreed with it. You can see all the uprated comments of people saying they didn't like this year's April Fool's Lack of Joke. Are people not supposed to uprate comments they agree with either? What's the point of having a rating system if not to say whether you liked or disliked the post?

I'm an old man who hates fun. This year's joke was perfect.
Where's my die-uh-beat-us medicine?

So was I the only one who saw Hello-Kitty Insider on here briefly yesterday?
aedonix Apr 2nd 2011 9:40AM
gnore that... seems somehow I ended up following a link to the archives.

I dunno folks, but the Reclaimed Ashkandi and those Balance Druid addon recommendations looked real and legit to me. But being April Fools, you never know!
Fox Van Allen Apr 2nd 2011 12:50PM
Well, Tyler Caraway is a joke, but that's more an everyday thing than an April Fool thing.
Utakata Apr 2nd 2011 4:02PM
Lol! :)

For the most part it was pretty good. I loved Crabby! A lot of the "news" were way too far fetched to be legit. I was kinda of disappointed that the Tomb of Immortal Darkness wasn't real. I mean my Gods! Could you imagine a dungeon that was pitch black, all you could see was the eyes of the enemy. The only light showing you the way would be from your spells. It would be a wonderful opportunity for Blizz to use their light sourcing in the new engine. It would have taken a huge amount of teamwork and would have been a blast!

Not doing an April Fools Joke and then claiming you did do an April Fools Joke is pretty lame.
Erzfiend Apr 2nd 2011 10:20AM
Trololololol.
It's laziness, is what it is. Son, I am disappoint.
Samutz Apr 2nd 2011 10:28AM
Pretty disappointing.
I was expecting a "new" comment system that did something funny with our comments, seeing as how we've been asking for a new comment system for ages.
Edymnion Apr 2nd 2011 10:45AM
You did absolutely nothing, and then want to call attention to that fact? Was greatly disappointed. I mean, seriously, would it have killed you to whip up something? Anything? I bet its because you're owned by AOL and they sucked your souls out through your ears, isn't it?
JC_Icefox Apr 2nd 2011 11:01AM
Wow.
I am in awe at the self-servicing commentary here. I've been of the opinion that some large news site should have done this forever. Can you imagine how much buzz someone like Google could've gotten if they did absolutely nothing?
I think the flaw was pointing out the joke so soon afterwards. Then folks give themselves permission to be offended about Absolutely Nothing. Eventually, April Fools jokes on the Internet will stop getting creative and strive to one-up each year because the general viewing public has come to expect it like god-damned clockwork.
conundrum Apr 2nd 2011 1:48PM
I think you're largely right, but the flaw was actually pointing it out at all. As other people have said, if you do it immediately afterwards you look hipster, like you're trying to get complemented for doing nothing and you thinking that makes you creative. If you point it out later as a "other websites made jokes on April Fool's Day, we just reported the news" it makes it look like you're taking the subject matter WAY too seriously. Boasting about it takes away the credibility of doing nothing, like you only did it so people would take you seriously.
Doing nothing is fine, but pointing it out proudly... you can't expect everyone (or even most people) to jump on board with that.

everyone is gonna QQ no matter what anyway, so this was well played, IMHO. I mean, remember the Hello Kitty Insider?! O.o
Jack Spicer Apr 2nd 2011 11:30AM
Its gotten to the point where I ignore and assume as false any story timestamped April 1st.
Malia Apr 2nd 2011 11:44AM
The April Fools Day stuff was cute, but couldn't you find something besides a movie about a woman's agonizing decision of which of her children to send to the gas chamber to compare your choice to? Don't get me wrong - I like fun and silliness as much as the next person, but "Sophie's Choice" is a terrible reference for a light-hearted post about April Fools silliness. I'm guessing few here have read the book or seen the film to be able to appreciate how gut wrenching the story is.
