What about restricting demons based on spec.
All specs get Voidwalker, Infernal, and Doomguard.
Affliction gets Felhunter.
Demonology gets Felguard.
Destruction gets Imp.
The leap isn't as big as it sounds. There would need to be adjustments to the spec specific demons to make up for the lost utility of being able to summon all demons, especially for PvP. This would give blizzard another knob for fine tuning each warlock spec.
Related idea:
- Tie soul shard usage to demons:
* Destruction: Demonic sacrifice. Banish imp in a soul shard to empower spells with (haste, crit, spellpower, int, whatever) for a short duration. At the end of the duration, the soul shard shatters and releases the imp. Demonic sacrifice was a cool talent that seemed misplaced. Destruction use of the talent seemed both fitting and interesting.
* Demonology: Felguard metamorphosis. The warlock's pet should have a chance to shine. Some effort would be needed so that it doesn't feel too much like BM hunter's The Beast Within (aka Big Red Hunter).
* Affliction: Shadow chomp. Shadow bite also refreshes the duration of all afflication DoTs to their max duration for the duration of this effect. Gives affliction warlocks a chance to spam nukes instead of mostly DoTs.
