The Undercity elevators were getting jealous of the BWD elevator boss' kill count and wanted to sucker new victims into their evil clutches.

Do people really die that often in the Undercity elevators? There are doors that prevent you from walking into the elevator shaft when the elevator isn't there. Is there a bug or something that gets you killed there?

It is very possible to die in the elevators. You simply have to get through the door at the very instant they close--and that that instant, the floor drops. There's about half a second between the door closing and the floor beginning to drop, and if you aren't already on the floor before the door starts to close, you're dead because the floor will fall faster than you. This means you plummet all the way to the bottom of the whole elevator shaft.
Happens. All. The. Time.

If you time it right (wrong), you'll end up running through the door as it closes, but the elevator itself drops a second earlier. Hence if you fall, you never catch up until it's already at the bottom. Splat.
It's also possible to do this at the bottom of the elevator and get stuck, and have to wait until the lift comes back down. Whether it crushes you or not, I don't know, since I've been able to run back out as the door opened.

@Cephas - My paladin had a hell of a time (for whatever reason) doing Headless Horseman runs one year. Every day that I signed her in to do the fight I'd die to the UC elevator.
No other character was gifted with the elevator curse like she was...
Not to mention that my drakes usually don't fit into the elevator...a good reason to avoid the town in general!

Also, if you hump the wall you can eaisly get caught on a edge and be left stranded in the middle of the shaft. You can jump down and die, or try to time a jump perfectly to jump back on while it goes back up.
Note* you can try, but dont expect to succeed
