Patch 4.1 PTR: New PvE-to-PvP currency conversion

General
- Honor is now purchasable from the Justice Commodities Vendor at 250 Honor per 375 Justice.
- Justice is now purchasable from the Honor Commodities Vendor at 250 Justice per 375 Honor.
- Conquest is now purchasable from the Valor vendor at 250 Conquest per 250 Valor.
This is huge for people who have found themselves capped on one or another of these currencies for a while now. I know for myself, I've ended up stockpiling heirlooms for characters I may or may not ever level just to keep below the JP cap. Now I can get serious about those last few PvP items I've been holding off picking up. I am surprised to see a valor-to-conquest conversion but not a conquest-to-valor one -- seems somewhat unfair, as it gives PvE players with access to a lot of valor points a way to jump into PvP but gives no such return for PvP players who want to get a leg up in PvE.
Keeping in mind it's the PTR and is always subject to change, of course, this should be a more interesting solution to point capping than we've seen before with trade goods and suchlike.
WoW Patch 4.1 is on the PTR, and WoW Insider has all the latest news for you -- from previews of the revamped Zul'Aman and Zul'Gurub to new valor point mechanics and new archaeology items.

A thought kind of struck me just now: If the four currencies can now be exchanged, what on earth is the purpose of having so many currency sets instead of having a minimum of two standard currencies (one for the lower-tier [justice/honor] and one for the higher-tier [valor/conquest])?
I can understand why they would want to keep the currencies separate for thematic reasons, but at this point it just seems silly that there isn't a unified standard for the two levels at this point. There's probably a good explanation for it, I'm just not seeing it right now.

Well, the exchange rates aren't full, so combining Honor/Justice and Valor/Conquest would be a problem. Blizz doesn't want you to be able to kit yourself out with PvP gear as efficiently with Justice as you could with Honor (and vice-versa), that would just be... unpleasant.
Joseph Smith Apr 7th 2011 8:25PM
Note the disparity in exchange rates. You lose when converting between honor and justice. This way people will still feel compelled to do PvE or PvP first, but have a great way to convert to the opposite currency if/when they get capped and run out of stuff to buy.
If you unify the currency imto one, then PvPers will feel they HAVE to PvE to be able to stay competitive (by grinding out points/gear faster) and vice versa.

Or, adjust the pricing model.

Conquest can be bought for valor but not the other way around...

Also remember that Blizz is also doubling the rate of honor in battlegrounds too.

Buy stuff. Get the warmounts. Get heirlooms. Get trade goods if you have too. Maelstrom crystals will be sold there soon if they aren't there already (haven't checked).
Tokhand Apr 7th 2011 8:32PM
You buy stuff. This stuff could be equipment. This stuff could also be materials, like leather, dusts, essences, shards, ores, and herbs. You can use this stuff by making other stuff or auction it.
There. You are no longer at the cap.
Come 4.1 and you are again at the cap you could also get yourself Maelstrom Crystals. These will cost almost all of whatever points you are spending.

@ jsin: So basically you are upset over you flawed assumption that people who have families and jobs and aren't complete wastes of human existance who hide in their moms basement playing WoW all day every day would have the chance to enjoy the game too? Which as was pointed out before those who do play on a "I have a real lifeN schedule won't be seeing the benefits because you still have to earn points. You are an idiot.
jsin1276 Apr 7th 2011 8:15PM
What is happening to WoW? What are they thinking? First the Call to arms for LFG and now this. They might as well give us gear for logging in everyday while doing nothing. This is really disappointing.
unvme331 Apr 7th 2011 8:26PM
everyday log on, come on your not thinking of the "casuals" how about if your logged in for 30mins over the weekend, then you get gear free, your choice of spec, stats(although blizzard has pretty much took any choice of that now too). because that seems to be the direction Bliz is heading. make everything easy for the person who logs in once a weekend. who cares about all of us hardcore ppl who have been paying for 5 years, cater to the weekend warriors who jump on for a few 5 man runs.
ugghh, Blizzard are you trying to make WoW tank so you don't have to support it and can move onto you new baby, starcraft2?
Skiddy Apr 7th 2011 8:45PM
Actually, no, you're just holding on to archaic practices because you're afraid of change. As the world(of warcraft) progresses as a whole, the world needs to change to better suit the needs of everyone.
If you would actually read into it rather than making assumptions, you'd realize that you could PVP to get into heroics, yes, but that doesn't mean you're going to do well. You can get all the gear in the world, but it doesn't guarantee you're going to be good at what you do. Some people prefer to PVP, some people prefer to PVE(me), and the DPS aspect of the latter is being punnished for rolling a rogue/hunter/mage/warlock/everyclassinthegamethat'snotadruidwarriororpaladin. It's frusterating having to wait 25-40 minutes in a DPS queue and the thought of being able to at least GEAR for heroics through PVP is drool inducing.

@ jsin1276 and unvme331:
Skiddy has it right. And if you actually think about it, nobody's being *given* anything. This change benefits people who have more points than they can spend, not people who hardly play.
In other words, this change gives the "hardcore" people more to buy. The "weekend warriors" probably won't be making enough badges for trading them in to be worth it. Understand that? The casual players you seem to despite so much will hardly see any benefit from this.
Cyno01 Apr 8th 2011 1:05AM
This is good for PVE players. This is good for PVP players. This is especially good for people who do both. And they said they wanted to do this all along.
Gah, some people will just bitch about anything.
Cigan Apr 8th 2011 4:22PM
I completely agree with Mused. No one is being given anything. We don't have to play any less to get anything we just don't have to make the game like a job. We will still have to get through 7 heroics a week to get our valor points, and we will still have to be good enough to finish the dungeons. You think the casual players who don't optimize their spec or stats, and therefore take way longer to get through dungeons are going to have the patience to grind 7 heroics in a Saturday? Because having the endurance to marathon through 7 heroics is way WAY less hard core than logging in once a day for an hour. You don't even make any sense.
This change allows you trade the low end points for each other at a penalty. It will primarily be used by dps who aren't patient enough to wait for the misery that is the dungeon finder to get their justice points, but they will have to sacrifice faction rep to do it, and people who have maxed out on justice point gear, and want to get enough PVP gear to at least have some resilience when out in the world to give them a chance against that world pvp ganker. These are small things, but they make a huge difference in terms of quality of life. You can't get valor points from this, which would actually be a travesty. So get over it.
