Breakfast Topic: What are your Warcraft movie predictions?

With the Warcraft movie on the horizon (though probably the distant horizon, at best), a lot of us are wondering what it might be like. Sam Raimi, the director of the recent Spiderman movies, is still supposedly attached the direct the film. Outside of the director, though, there aren't really any people set in stone to work on the project. That leaves open a lot of speculation of who might land starring roles.
Of course, that will also all depend on what story they end up using. As far as I know, they will not be basing the plot off any specific plot line we have now. We won't be seeing a movie about the Lich King or Deathwing's attack on Azeroth, though many of the important lore figures are likely to be around. Instead, this movie will focus on an as-of-yet unknown hero. I predict the main character will be human, both from the popularity of the race in game and the ease of casting a human, relatively. (There just aren't that many orcs in Hollywood.) I'd also go as far as to say this human will be functionally close to a warrior or a paladin, since American movies love to see brute force fighters and wrathful avengers. Someone like Chris Hemsworth is someone I could see being a lead actor. There are just so many potential plot lines, character choices, and talent specializations that could be chosen for this movie.
What do you think the movie will be like? Are you expecting a typical adventure plot or something that is highly tuned to Warcraft themes? A star-studded cast or a bunch of talented unknowns?

Bruce is full of win. For those of you who don't watch check out Burn Notice sometime. Next season doesn't start until June but they usually play the last season marathon style the day it comes back. Good show and Sam Axe is the man.

Reading the headline, my first thought was "Bruce Campbell cameo". A small, but memorable, appearance just to remind everyone that he's still awesome.
Also, Noyou, there'll be a special made-for-TV movie about Campbell's Burn Notice character, Sam Axe, covering the events right before the start of the series (sort of like a prequel). Burn Notice: The Fall of Sam Axe, April 17th (9ET/8CT).
On USA: Characters Welcome.
(I figured if I was going to sound like a commercial for USA Network, I might as well go all the way with it)

Oh thank Heavens! I would have missed that. Thanks for the info ;)

Please cast The Big Chinned One for a cameo as Leeroy Jenkins *crosses fingers*
Actually I don't care what he does, Campbell is a legend and has to be in thise.

You guys speak of Bruce Campbell and all you guys reference as a showcase of his work is "Burn Notice"?
Wow... that is so NOT what I thought of upon hearing his name.
I must be getting old.

Bruce could resume his role of Autolycus and fit right in!

I'm fine with almost any actors/actresses...ses, but if they let Knaak so much as LOOK at the script, I'm going to kill someone!

You should all know by now that the WoW movie is an urban myth

Whichever way it goes, I think seeing all the faction leaders playing a big role in the movie is a must. Who wants to see Sylvanas played by Tricia Helfer? I know I do!
thinkuknowme Apr 8th 2011 8:40AM
You had me at Tricia Helfer.
You reeled me in at Tricia Helfer as Lady Sylvanas.

See, this is the kind of thing that annoys me. An actor or actress becomes popular, and suddenly they pop up in everything. No offense to you guys, but I would rather not see her in the movie.
When they announced her as the voice of Kerrigan, I was like "WHAT?". They chose her simply because she was popular at the time. Over the original voice actress.
When you cast a famous person in a role, that role stops being the character, and becomes "That celebrity in that role." You think anyone would even see Sylvanas? Hell no. They would see Tricia Helfer.
Press would refer to the character not as Sylvanas, but "Tricia Helfer's character".
That's one of the reasons they cast unknowns in Star Trek. They didn't want the characters to be known from other roles, and have that overshadow their characters. You want this movie to stand on it's own feet, not be "So-and-so's new movie."
BadAndyMk3 Apr 8th 2011 10:55AM
... Who's Tricia Helfer
Seriously... I think she qualifies as an unknown in movie parlance.
thinkuknowme Apr 8th 2011 11:19AM
BadAndy - she was the blonde Cylon on Battlestar - she's a chameleon - she became like 8 different versions of "Six" with total professionalism. I think she'd be a wonderful Sylvanas - tall and lithe. But I don't think a WoW movie is her 'style.'
bimberiusz Apr 8th 2011 11:31AM
I think that sylvanas part is already reserved to michelle morrow ;)
and to BadAndyMk3
bad geek! bad! not knowing who number six is!

The producers of this movie have such great subject matter at their disposal. Lets hope they appreciate this fact and not make a bodge job al lá dragonball or any of the half assed marvel movies.
"I'd also go as far as to say this human will be functionally close to a warrior or a paladin, since American movies love to see brute force fighters and wrathful avengers" This made me rage. This is a movie that should be left to the film makers and not the marketing crew trying to find a target audience.
Luturna Apr 8th 2011 8:14AM
Unfortunatly thats how hollywood works they make a film to sell to a certain audience not make a film then try and sell it.

Using resident Evil as a frame of reference I can say it will probably disappoint most WoW players. I think the fact that they are not picking an Expac/plot line to center on is a mistake from the beginning. WoW lore is too big to just gloss over. Having said that, if it is done right and draws things from the game it could work. The longer it takes to start production the more chance it has for the director/actors to not be available.
Darren Apr 8th 2011 11:47AM
From what it sounds like, they're at least claiming real effort is being put into the script... but it's still a movie intended to make money. They're going to go for what could appeal to a larger audience and not just existing Warcraft fans.
The general populance wouldn't be able to get behind a hero that was a lock, rogue, or DK; they probably wouldn't understand a Wow Shaman or druid enough to support it. Priests aren't usually lead characters in fantasy movies (with the new "Priest" movie as an exception). Hunters as well find themselves as support characters more often than not. This leaves Warrior, Paladin, or Mage as the possible "class" for the lead character...and lets face it. They guy in the center of the poster is going to be the burly melee guy as opposed to the dude in a dress. Actually in the movie, the caster will probably be a girl - go stereotypes!

Wait, wait, wait, WAIT! American movies do what? Last time I checked Captain Jack Sparrow is a scoundrel and Harry Potter is a kid. Not much brute force there. /myth busted.
