The Queue: Defiance
After Mike Sacco's puppy video yesterday, we had countless requests for a kitty rebuttal. A bunny rebutt, too. Well, I'm not going to do that. Kitties are played out, and bunnies are so Matt Rossi. I present you with a hedgehog instead.
In today's edition of The Queue, we cover lava damage, the story of Zangarmarsh, archaeology XP and more.
Kellandor asked:
What should I level if I'm going to be tanking the whole time, warrior or paladin?
This completely comes down to personal opinion, because both classes are good. Personally, I find warrior tanking a lot more fun and interactive. It always feels like the warrior has a much larger tool kit to deal with whatever crazy, wacky thing might go wrong while you're tanking. That doesn't mean it's true -- I haven't made a Big Box of Tools checklist for the tanking classes. That's just how I feel when I'm playing a warrior tank compared to a paladin tank.
I'm sure some of our readers will disagree with my assessment, and that's perfectly fine!
Andostre asked:
Why were the naga draining all the lakes in Zangarmarsh, anyway?
They wanted to control water as a resource in Outland. It was their way of waging war -- cut off the other team from basic necessities, and their ability to function is drastically reduced. There were also rumors in a plot thread in The Burning Crusade that Illidan, Kael'thas and Lady Vashj were all working together to create a new Well of Eternity in Outland, but that never came to pass. That rumor was most likely total bunk.
sup asked:
Do you have any idea why doesn't lava damage scale with level?
I enjoyed MusedMoose's reply to your question, so I'm just going to use that. MusedMoose said:
"It does. It's just really, really hard for lava to level up. I mean, people have to walk into lava and stay there for it to kill them, so it's not like lava gets any real exp. And most lava isn't in places where it can get rested, so there's another disadvantage. Lava that's over level 5 is a real rarity, which is too bad, because I've heard that once lava specs into Raid Fire, it can be really overpowered in the right situation. The talent Make People Stand in Me really needs to be nerfed."
Tolsimir asked:
Is there any way to remove a learned Mount spell? I've been leveling a character mountless, but accidentally taught myself the shiny pony. I'd prefer to have a blank page; any way to get rid of it?
Sorry, nope!
brighthammer asked:
Does archaeology award experience when leveling/grinding? And how about fishing? I'm thinking of returning to the game, and I'm trying to plan the most efficient way to get the items I want and hit 85.
Archaeology does provide experience, but fishing does not. I would really suggest not touching archaeology until you have a flying mount at least -- running all over creation on a ground mount for archaeology XP does not sound fun at all.

Makes me miss my hedgehog who passed, Snuggles. Middle name, carefully, made the vet laugh.

LOL@Grovin
Spoken like a true Chicago-guy :) "You send one of ours to the hospital, we send one of yours to the morgue- that's the Chicago way." comes to mind. Hey grove, you try the elementium dragonling? It's a trinket that summons a non-combat "looking" pet unless you are near a hostile enemy- then he fights for you :) Downside would be that you have to be an engineer to use it.

Q for the Q
What, in your collective opinion, is the bravest decision Blizz has made in regards to World of Warcraft?
Grovinofdarkhour Apr 11th 2011 11:25AM
Can bravest also be the stupidest? Or does it have to be both brave, and a good decision?
Also, do they have to have stuck with it, or can we included decisions they later went back on?
(I'm thinking about real names on forum posts - stupid, misguided, and wrong... but brave as hell)
airfric Apr 11th 2011 11:27AM
In my humble opinion, the very creation of World of Warcraft was a huge risk for Blizzard; MMORPGs are a ridiculously huge endeavor, and for any one company to invest time and resources into such a project is an extremely brave decision.
Sky Apr 11th 2011 1:43PM
The bravest decision was the move away from 40-man raids to smaller size raids and to a lesser extent, the badge system. You have to remember that what made Vanilla popular was the sheer epicness of having 40 people come together to fight a raid boss. Moving away from that design philosophy towards a smaller group is a very risky move.
Skrotus Apr 11th 2011 2:34PM
@Sky
While I agree with you that 40 mans felt pretty epic, I was under the impression in vanilla that raiding in general was only partaken by a small percentage of the playerbase. Fielding 40 players was hard. It wasn't really until WotLK that raiding was brought to the masses, and I'd be pretty interested to hear what the percentage is now, is it a majority? Even in a major raiding guild there's usually a portion of casuals who don't raid, and there's a lot of non-raiding guilds out there.
I guess offending the hardcore raiding section of the community was a bit of a risk, but like all these "catering to casuals" moves, the reward is getting more of the community involved in raids which is pretty huge I imagine considering how much of their development time goes in to creating raid content.
Suzaku Apr 12th 2011 5:13AM
Skrotus is correct, 40-man raids were far from what made WoW succesful. Hardcore endgame raiding could be found in all of WoW's contemporaries, and it was Everquest's hardcore endgame raiding that directly influenced WoW's, because Kalgan was recruited to WoW because of his experience as an EQ guild leader.
What really made Vanilla succesful was mostly the Blizzard and Warcraft branding coupled with the accessibility and ease-of-play features it incorporated, previously absent in the genre. Plus, it sort of developed that kind of popularity that feeds off itself, getting more people interested in it the more mainstream attention it got.

Could someone please explain to me why in the blazes you'd want to level a character mountless?
