Assuming they only saw photos of the submissions and not the physical objects themselves, it's probably due to the entrants more than the hosts. If someone sends in an obviously awesome axe but it's a bad picture, what're ya gonna do, disqualify it for being a bad photo, or recognize it anyway as an awesome construct? You would hope the creators would take more care is presenting their work though, I know as an artists getting good quality representation of your work is very important.
