Crowd Control serves as "each character engages one mob" and preferable to each person picking a their own target to DPS. If everyone could take the hits from each heroic mob, there would have to be a heck of a lot of homogenizing between the classes, and that would be boring.
Something makes WoW (and any game like it) interesting is the specialization of the classes and their roles. I know some complain about the "Role Trifecta" but I prefer it to having everyone do everything.
