The Light and How to Swing It: Retribution paladin gear in patch 4.1

Patch 4.1 will be hitting live servers ... well, eventually. We don't really know. It's been on the PTR since later February, and it never feels any closer, does it? Regardless, patch 4.1 is bringing the revamped Zul'Gurub and Zul'Aman heroics which have both been (more or less) fully itemized in recent weeks. That's what we'll be looking at today.
Do note that this is content that is still on the PTR, so itemization changes could still happen before the patch hits live realms, though it is unlikely. We can all be reasonably sure this list will work just fine come patch day. Do note, however, that what bosses these drops come from isn't concrete quite yet -- but that's fine. They're not raid zones; you don't need to save up your DKP. Plus, knowing that they exist within these two dungeons narrows it down pretty well already.
The list is also going to be fairly short. It's only two dungeons, after all.
- Weapon
- Head
- Neck
- Shoulder
- Cloak
- Chest
- Bracers
- Gloves
- Belt
- Legs
- Feet
- Rings
-
Trinkets
- Miniature Voodoo Mask (just for fun)
You won't be able to make a full set of Zul'Aman/Zul'Gurub gear, because there are gaps in select slots. For example, there's a lovely pair of DPS bracers that all non-raiders will desperately want due to how difficult it is to find a quality pair of bracers in pre-raid content, but there is no plate DPS belt. This is because it's already a belt like that which is very easy to acquire. Exalted with the Guardians of Hyjal will get you the ilevel 359 Belt of the Ferocious Wolf. Based on ilevel alone, it would be superior to any drop in these instances anyway.
There are also some pieces that simply don't math out very well with current mechanics. Haste became a rather undesirable stat in patch 4.0.6. Combine that with how relatively easy it is for us to reach our hit and expertise caps, and pieces like the Plunderer's Gauntlets are just not that desirable, even with reforging.
This shouldn't be a surprise, though. The developers have stated clearly that they don't want itemization to be perfect, especially not in the early tiers of the game. You shouldn't be able to have absolutely perfect stats in every slot. We shouldn't expect every item out of these two instances to be ideal. As long as there are a few pieces that are ideal, such as the Skullpiercer Pauldrons, we're set. Crit, mastery, and a red gem slot? Yes, please!
I also feel that it's worth noting that the two weapons, Reforged Trollbane and Jeklik's Smasher, have only one minor difference between them. They're completely equal except that Trollbane has hit and Jeklik's Smasher has crit. In a world with reforging, I fully expect Jeklik's Smasher to be primarily used by Alliance players and Trollbane to (ironically) largely be used by Horde players, for the same reasons Reclaimed Ashkandi and Shalug'doom are playing out that way, even though the stat gap between them is much larger: racials. If you're not a human (with the swords and maces racial) or an orc (with the axe racial), you'll just use whichever one you get first.
* Marked items are undeniably tank items. However, they have at least one stat useful to DPS, so I included them in the list just in case you're still using a blue in that slot -- reforging half of the dodge or parry into mastery, crit or haste will almost certainly turn that item into something better than your blue. You should, of course, defer to tanks -- tank gear is tank gear. But if you're wearing a blue and the item would otherwise be disenchanted, yes, take it and make use of it until you get the DPS drops.

axe racial does us(pallies) no good. Orc pallies dont exist.....yet
shadowhowl1900 Apr 13th 2011 4:31PM
its suppose to mean that as a horde pally, we would pick out whichever one we get first and have no priority as listed

And three points of expertise isn't really a big deal, either.
Though I would prefer the mace on my dwarf. I am sick of axes.

"You won't be able to make a full set of Zul'Aman/Zul'Gurub gear"
Thank god for that. I come back to WoW after a couple months and this is my main's gear? Jesus christ, this is some of the ugliest crap I've ever seen. What the hell, Blizzard.

My Paladin, on the other hand, can't get enough skulls for his armor.
BLOOD FOR THE BLOOD NAARU!

@DeathPaladin: Heh, that was good.
I had the gnome-skull shoulders back in the day. Ah, the memories...

Helm is awful, looks like Venom, from Spiderman in a Mexican wrestling mask.

I'm really glad they're bringing back some of the worst looking gear they've ever made in the game. It's also gear that probably has the exact opposite style of what heroic fantasy characters, especially something like a paladin, should look like.
Not sure how wearing bamboo wrapped in poo is any kind of look any player would ever want to sport...

Thank the Light I turn my helm off... I'm not a fan of troll fashion...

Heh, ZA loot is probably my favourite looking loot in game. To each his own, I guess.

Why didn't you use the wowhead PTR links to show the items instead of the mmo champ database links? I like mmo champ, but I don't like having to click 15 links to see the items.

I dunno about 'lost' it - i think it was just re-allocated. New things coming up, outside of WoW...

Not really true. Off-tier armour has almost always been reskins or generic stuff.
Take Molten Core (first raid). Several of the off-tier armour pieces are generic models:
- Helm of the Livegiver
- Deep Earth Spaulders
- Wild Growth Spaulders
are all reskins of generic Common loot.
Whilst most of the weapon models are unique enough, some are decidedly meh (Blastershot Launcher, Earthshaker).
Blackwing Lair - weapon models cleaned up a bit, most are now specialised draconic looking things. Off-tier armour still very generic (Helm of Endless Rage, Black Brood Pauldrons).
AQ40 was the same - good unique weapons, fairly generic off-tier pieces.
I forget Naxx 60, since never went there
In TBC, almost all off-tier armour pieces were reskins. 60-68 instances had dungeon set 1/2 reskins. 68-70 had Tier 1 & 2 reskins. Karazahn/Gruul/Magtheridon had Tier 2 and Dungeon Set 3 reskins throughout.
Most of SSC/TK off-tier pieces are reskins of various Tier 5 sets - the very set you were supposed to be there to obtain. This is the theme they have used for most of the rest of the raid instances - use same models for stuff of the same quality, so it all kinda fits together.
Oddly enough, the primary exceptions to all of the above are Zul'Aman, which has it's own troll-themed stuff as a non-set; and Sunwell Plateau, which has it's own non-set models (albeit, shared with the Brutal Gladiator set).
To be honest, this reskinning doesn't bother me too much. For each new raid tier the model designers have to come up with 10 sets of interlocking armour pieces (1 per class), and a variety of unique-ish weapon models (heck, even Finkle's Mixer Upper, a wand so rarely if ever seen has a unique model). Asking/expecting them to make another 9/10 new armour sets purely for the "filler" drops (meaning not-tier items) seems a bit harsh.
This has an added benefit, though a fairly mild one. In current content (BoT, BWD, ToFW?) the Holy Plate is the Paladin set, the DPS Plate is Warrior set, and Tank plate is the Death Knight set. So if a Warrior really likes the Death Knight set, he can collect a look-alike set.

I know you're not trying to support dps needing on tank gear, but when you include it in lists like this you're practically begging the more than a few dps plate-wearers that already do it to feel justified in this dbag behavior.
Xenikos Apr 14th 2011 12:03PM
It would be stupid of them not to include potentially useful loot in lists. Items don't always clearly prefer one spec over another, especially ones that lack sockets and socket bonuses. Mastery, hit, expertise....if secondary stats are a combo of both, then it is equally tank and DPS.
Take an item like the Tia's Grace trinket, that grants mastery and stacking agility. Designed to be a DPS item, but it is one of the best tanking trinkets for warriors/paladins. Should tanks not be informed of this fact, out of the fear that they might ninja it from DPS people??
