WoW Rookie: How to learn mouse turning

We talked about the first steps to becoming a PvP legend last week, which spawned an interesting discussion. Most folks generally accept that it's "best" to control your movement with a mouse -- or at least your turning. This is because your characters spins about faster if you make the motion with your mouse. At the same time, if you're moving with your mouse, your other hand is free to execute keyboard commands.
Controlling your character this way can be a significant behavior change, especially if you've been a keyboard turner for your entire World of Warcraft career. Learning how to mouse turn requires relearning your interface and even going so far as completely rearranging a huge number of buttons.
Let's talk about how to mouse turn.
Your toolbox Here's the general setup: One hand controls your mouse. If you have a relatively standard mouse, clicking the right button and whipping the mouse left to right will turn your character. Holding down both mouse buttons will cause your character to run forward.
Nearly everything else will be done with your other hand. There are a couple of exceptions that should be noted. First, for all that I keep saying "all your movement should be done with your mouse," I know many very successful PvP players who strafe on the keyboard. Second, some targeting duties will still fall back to your mouse -- things like targeting just the right enemy or hovering your mouse over a healing target.
Most of what your "keyboard hand" will be doing is executing damage rotations, kicking off defensive cooldowns, and triggering reactive abilities like interrupts.
Getting started
The first step is to bind your old movement keys to be something else. Using a good, flashy effect that you will definitely notice is a good option; that will serve as a visual reminder when you've inadvertantly used the "wrong key."
Once you've done that, it's time to go for a jog. I'd recommend a leisurely stroll from the top of Kalimdor all the way down to Tanaris. Start your character running (on a ground mount's fine, but a flying mount rather defeats the point). By the time you've reached the bottom of Tanaris, you'll find turning left and right with your mouse has become a whole lot smoother.
Basic fights
I could tell you all of my keyboard buttons, but that won't help you; we use different spells. Instead, let's start focusing on the logic that drives how you should set up your keyboard.
As you're making your long jog along Kalimdor, pick a few fights along the way. What button do you use the most? Put that on your keyboard. Stop by a target dummy and practice your rotation. Everything you press should be somewhere on your keyboard.
I still use the Q and E keys for strafing, but my basic damage and tanking rotation goes on the old movement keys. (I back up using the tilde key [~].)
I put lesser-used spells where my fingers have to stretch further and less naturally hit the keys. Maybe I just have tiny-baby hands, but I tend not to easily hit the Y key with my keyboard hand. The letter G is about as far as I can make it.
Once I've got all the "big stuff" mapped out, I start setting modified keys. You can write macros and assign them to keyboard commands like Shift+2 or Ctrl+W.
Try it out in the battlegrounds Before you start trying to mouse turn in raids or arenas, try it out in battlegrounds. The high demands on your reflexes and situational awareness should cement your habits into place.
The other thing BGs will do, though, is get you in the habit of turning quickly. With rogues and mages whipping around you at all times, you'll pick it up very quickly.
Healing with the mouse
Mouse turning is slightly more complicated for healers, especially if you make good use of raid frames. After all, you'll probably want to use your mouse to use most healing macros and special tricks.
Depending on how you have your UI set up, you can still turn with your mouse, and use the strafing keys to get you out of most trouble. Experiment with the setup and see how it works for you. Healing is, admittedly, a pretty big challenge compared to the other roles, at least in terms of moving with your mouse while actually casting your spells.
Keep at it
The last trick to learning how to mouse turn is to take your time. Don't get frustrated if it doesn't come naturally. I guess if it were easy, that'd be how the default control scheme would be set up. But it definitely has benefits, and once you've got the method learned, you'll be a lot better off.

Autumn, you mention situations primarily for tanks and healers, and it's been noted in the comments that those roles tend to need their mouse for things other than turning more often than dpsers do. It's not impossible to be a tank or healer and be a mouse-exclusive turner, but for the greater number of people in those roles there are definite limitations to it. So it comes down to what works for you. But I still advocate being familiar with the practice of mouse turning no matter what your role is.

Why would anyone want to unbind the movement keys... I am using the standard WASD key setup (with A & D for turning, not strafing) - I am using it very often when my right hand is busy with a drink or simply resting. Sure, in combat I always use mouse for turning and strafing, but having a standard WASD backup is very convenient.

Haha, I have my movement set up exactly like yours and use Bartender. I never keyboard turned and barely ever click a spell, almost everything is keybound except for stuff I don't use in combat. But I just never thought unbinding walking keys (forward/backward) would be viable - that's what I was commenting about specifically.
I end up playing all roles at some point. Healing in PvP is probably where I use keyboard movement (not turning, but walking/strafing) most since there's a lot of quick target switching while on the run and I switch between mouse and keyboard walking like a madman.

First time I heard the term keyboard turner I had no idea what it meant. I've always moved with my mouse. Also I use a keypad, a Belkin n52te (Giving me 3x27 key under one hand.) right now. Razor also has some great keypads. I couldn't play without it and I only use the keyboard when chatting.

I tried mouse control once, and lasted five minutes, before I had to switch back. It created the same effect as I always get when I try to play any FPS, a severe headache and a feeling of nausea. It's also the same effect that 3D televisions/gaming consoles have on me and from what I can gather about 10% of people suffer the same way.

Mouse turning definitely improved my play, but not nearly as much as learning to use keybinds rather than spell clicking.
good article!

Okay I'm still not clear if I'm a mouse turner. I think I am.
I use my "mouse look" to turn. Is this mouse turning?
I tend to move forward with W and "mouse look" to turn. When necessary, I can do all my movement with the mouse, but I tend to use to W to move forward most the time.

I could be reading you wrong, but it seems like you're wasting at least one hand when you run with W and turn with the mouse, assuming you're doing both at the same time. It seems like it would be easier to run *and* steer with your mouse alone in such a case. If you're bent on running with your keyboard, I'm a huge fan of using opposing keys. Such as Q (left strafe) at the same time as D (turn right). (Or A and R to go the other way.) It effectively allows you to dance around your target, constantly facing it and never wasting a step. Since with that you're mostly strafing and a very short hold on a turn key will aim you plenty well, this frees up enough time to also cast with keybinds while you run if you have them bound close enough and you're familiar enough with your setup. Try it around your local cart, fountain, or other large semi-circular object. Mailboxes are too small. Try a dragon or dance floor if necessary.
Exmaple: I'm a holy priest. With this method I can strafe around the edges of a room while casting any instant-cast spell, such as Prayer of Mending, Renew, or Shield, each on a different target which I'm clicking on with my mouse. The keybinds are right next to the directional keys, so it takes one finger on one key to maintan movement (the strafe), one short click on another directional key to change course, and whichever free finger is around to push the nearby keybinds. I also use my thumb and pinky finger to push Alt, Control, or Shift to modify which spells I cast. Such as Renew is 1, Shift-1 is Shield. Both instant-casts and both able to be cast while running with the strafe/turn strategy with limited changing of finger positions. This frees my mouse for clicking targets.
Different example: Now I'm a mage, and that tank won't hold still, or that mob or rogue is being a jerk with Shadowstep. I'm now spamming keybound abilities with my left hand while using my right hand to mouse turn constantly so as to avoid the dreaded "You must be facing your target" or to keep up/in range. I use primarily Tab to target mobs or a /assist [X] macro (appropriately keybound). I just advise you not be the idiot who Tab-target pulls half the instance. Please. My tank hates you.

I use a mix of key-moving and mouse-moving, and honestly it's worked out pretty well for me. I still use the AWSD to move, but then always have the most important buttons in my rotation assigned to the 1-4 keys for quick and easy access during movement. At the same time, I'll have any secondary abilities assigned to the 9, 0, - and = keys (i.e. the last 4 slots on the action bar) as well as those same spots on the action bar directly above that so they can be quickly accessed with the mouse.
In this way, I can still move in a way that feels natural (I've used mouse turning before and still do sometimes, but for actual movement it's not as precise as I'd like it to be) while at the same time being capable of quickly using my most important abilities.

"I still use the Q and E keys for strafing..." -- waste of two good buttons... rookies should rebind strafe to A and D from day 1. It's far quicker to run away from something sideways. Mouse turning with strafe gives the most natural movement of your toon in the game and only takes half an hour to learn.

I 6 years in WoW, I've NEVER felt comfortable with mouse-turning. Likely, it has a lot to do with the fact that I play a healer ( or....7...), but it's something I tried to learn and get used to back in Vanilla (when I was PVPing 95% of the time), but utterly failed at.
That being said, I don't have my movement keys bound to the "standard" WASD keys. My binds are more centered on my keyboard, so that I can utilize my number bar a LOT easier, and also bind other actions to the keys that fully surround my movement keys, instead of being all mostly to the right of said keys. I think a lot of people,. especially those who downplay the effectiveness of keyboard turners, FORGET that movement keys can be bound ANYWHERE.
I just think that if folks are REALLY that bothered by a keyboard turner's fraction of a second movement differential (which is really debatable), they need to take a break and relax a bit. Mouse turners aren't perfect nor are they the Alpha players.

"I know many very successful PvP players who strafe on the keyboard."
You make it sound like we're in some sort of minority. Newsflash...EVERY SINGLE successful pvper strafes with the keyboard. Watch any high-rated pvp video and you'll see it. You can't pvp properly without strafing, there's no bones about it. I hope someone doesn't read this and unbind strafe from the keyboard thinking they're gunna be pro.
Priestess Apr 14th 2011 11:32PM
Wow, I never thought of moving my movement keys to the center of the keyboard! Genius! That gives me so many more options I never imagined..... I'm not very imaginative.
aoifeniaodhagain Apr 15th 2011 5:50AM
You can bind strafing to your mouse if you have one with extra buttons.

Yes, healing is a different beast. The comment below this (jfofla) also mentions the same thing. I am and have always been a healer. I prefer to mouse turn, but the huge number of abilities I use limits how many I can accurately bind to reachable keys, and as I have no fancy keyboard or mouse, I have to use keyboard turning as often as not. Another huge part of it is the necessity of a healer needing to click so many people, and that's more true if you're using things such as mouseover macros. If I'm really in a bind I can use my F2 F3 etc keys to target my group's players and press the corresponding keybind while running with my mouse, but that's often not quite as effective. I find that it's best for me to pivot using the mouse whenever possible, but if it's just a run I can be better served by clicking people or abilities while using my keyboard to take the hike. So that's from a permanent healer's point of view.
Overall I think it's a great idea for everyone regardless of role to get familiar with mouse turning whether or not you actually decide to use it. It can be a big asset in PvP or in certain PvE situations (such as running a certain direction instantly or pivoting away from a boss's blinding ability). My husband (a tank) is a die-hard keyboard turner, but I did get him to try it, and at least *having* the ability to do it with some accuracy has been helpful for him in some situations. I guess it's one of those things where it's nice to have it and not need it, IMO.

Dah! This comment system is attrocious! I copy my posts for those times when they get mysteriously eaten, but I still can't stop it from not replying to the correct post no matter how many times I checked it. Garrrrrr!

I'm a keyboard turner because I use a laptop, no mouse. And if I attempt to turn with the touch pad, I end up looking at the sky. My left had does all my abilities, my right hand hovers over the directional keys. I never use A S D W. I will however occasionally use Q & E to strife.
And the fact of the matter is I started playing WoW back in mid BC with a laptop, I have always played with a laptop. I don't think I would know what to do if I had a mouse to work with.
