WoW Rookie: How to learn mouse turning

We talked about the first steps to becoming a PvP legend last week, which spawned an interesting discussion. Most folks generally accept that it's "best" to control your movement with a mouse -- or at least your turning. This is because your characters spins about faster if you make the motion with your mouse. At the same time, if you're moving with your mouse, your other hand is free to execute keyboard commands.
Controlling your character this way can be a significant behavior change, especially if you've been a keyboard turner for your entire World of Warcraft career. Learning how to mouse turn requires relearning your interface and even going so far as completely rearranging a huge number of buttons.
Let's talk about how to mouse turn.
Your toolbox Here's the general setup: One hand controls your mouse. If you have a relatively standard mouse, clicking the right button and whipping the mouse left to right will turn your character. Holding down both mouse buttons will cause your character to run forward.
Nearly everything else will be done with your other hand. There are a couple of exceptions that should be noted. First, for all that I keep saying "all your movement should be done with your mouse," I know many very successful PvP players who strafe on the keyboard. Second, some targeting duties will still fall back to your mouse -- things like targeting just the right enemy or hovering your mouse over a healing target.
Most of what your "keyboard hand" will be doing is executing damage rotations, kicking off defensive cooldowns, and triggering reactive abilities like interrupts.
Getting started
The first step is to bind your old movement keys to be something else. Using a good, flashy effect that you will definitely notice is a good option; that will serve as a visual reminder when you've inadvertantly used the "wrong key."
Once you've done that, it's time to go for a jog. I'd recommend a leisurely stroll from the top of Kalimdor all the way down to Tanaris. Start your character running (on a ground mount's fine, but a flying mount rather defeats the point). By the time you've reached the bottom of Tanaris, you'll find turning left and right with your mouse has become a whole lot smoother.
Basic fights
I could tell you all of my keyboard buttons, but that won't help you; we use different spells. Instead, let's start focusing on the logic that drives how you should set up your keyboard.
As you're making your long jog along Kalimdor, pick a few fights along the way. What button do you use the most? Put that on your keyboard. Stop by a target dummy and practice your rotation. Everything you press should be somewhere on your keyboard.
I still use the Q and E keys for strafing, but my basic damage and tanking rotation goes on the old movement keys. (I back up using the tilde key [~].)
I put lesser-used spells where my fingers have to stretch further and less naturally hit the keys. Maybe I just have tiny-baby hands, but I tend not to easily hit the Y key with my keyboard hand. The letter G is about as far as I can make it.
Once I've got all the "big stuff" mapped out, I start setting modified keys. You can write macros and assign them to keyboard commands like Shift+2 or Ctrl+W.
Try it out in the battlegrounds Before you start trying to mouse turn in raids or arenas, try it out in battlegrounds. The high demands on your reflexes and situational awareness should cement your habits into place.
The other thing BGs will do, though, is get you in the habit of turning quickly. With rogues and mages whipping around you at all times, you'll pick it up very quickly.
Healing with the mouse
Mouse turning is slightly more complicated for healers, especially if you make good use of raid frames. After all, you'll probably want to use your mouse to use most healing macros and special tricks.
Depending on how you have your UI set up, you can still turn with your mouse, and use the strafing keys to get you out of most trouble. Experiment with the setup and see how it works for you. Healing is, admittedly, a pretty big challenge compared to the other roles, at least in terms of moving with your mouse while actually casting your spells.
Keep at it
The last trick to learning how to mouse turn is to take your time. Don't get frustrated if it doesn't come naturally. I guess if it were easy, that'd be how the default control scheme would be set up. But it definitely has benefits, and once you've got the method learned, you'll be a lot better off.

I think you would squeal with joy, honestly. You can turn your character 180 degrees in a fraction of a second. I guarantee it takes 3-4 seconds to do the same with your keyboard.

Cambro, I can see you clearly missed my point.

This exactly. I often play in places where I don't have room for a mouse anyway and a trackpad is awful. If anyone has hints on how to trackpad turn I'd love to hear them.
I use my left hand for abilities and my right on the arrow keys for fast movement.I also am able to use my right hand for occasional abilities, which is damn handy as a warlock with my mass of keybinds that I use frequently. My shaman is much easier to play with keybinds for my left hand only, leaving my right free for a mouse.
I have used a mouse for a while, but I found it more awkward. I made a conscious decision to train myself to mouse turn but never found the reward worth the inconvenience. The only real problem I encounter in normal play is that it's hard to steer flying well using either a touchpad or keys and vehicles don't seem to like trackpads which makes some quests a pain.

Just buy the Razer Naga mouse. All 12 keys at your thumbtip. Also more than 4 modifier keys multiply the usefulness of it.

I feel that works best for a player is how they should play.
There may be no reason for you to keyboard turn, but for me it just doesn't work.
To each their own.

I started out as a keyboard turner, but learned the importance of being able to mouse turn when attempting, and failing, to tank Murmur back in Burning Crusade. That's the fight where he does his air sucking thing, and you have about 3 seconds (as melee or tank) to do an about-face and run out, or else he will basically kill you from massive damage. I tried intervening (as a warrior), but you had to face the target. Definitely can't walk backwards fast enough, and if you use your keyboard to turn and run, forget it.
So being in that instance (which name I forget) and wiping repeatedly, the personal shame of not being able to tank that boss led me in pursuit of the means of success...and I became a mouse turner. I started using the mouse every time I wanted to move forward and/or turn. I still use the default keys to back up and to strafe, but the mouse is too important a piece of equipment; I need it to do my job well. And interestingly, as someone else pointed out, it's vital in pvp as well. My pvp skills improved very quickly once I got used to moving with the mouse.

What about strafing?

i technically mastered it by
1) doing AutoCAD at work..
2) raiding a lot.. requires turning at times...

Mouse turn since I started this game. Never played a game where I had to use WASD and I probably never will. Nice article tho.

Have Always used Mouse Turn.
As for walking back I just use right+middle mouse.
Right+Left is forward
Side buttons to strafe
Right and left buttons control the camera and move direction
I have never got on will keyboard moving as I always loose my place on the keys and find it hard to move and cast abilities at the same time.

Lots of people can interact with the game in a lot of different ways, especially depending on what role they want to fill.
But if you were advising someone new to the game, you would always tell them to go for the following setup:
E - Forward
S - Left Strafe (shift+S for turning left)
D - Backpedal
F - Right Strafe (shift+f for turning right).
Most skilled players use ESDF to open up more of the keyboard for bindings and macros.
Healers using Clique who praise keyboard turning: Sure, sometimes when you don't want to move your mouse from raid frames you can Shift+F or Shift+S. But there are going to be times in raids when you don't want your camera angle to take MINUTES to turn, and you'd still want your mouse to be available to preform that function.

I'm a hybrid turner. I strafe a lot. I do this for a few reasons:
1. I'm a healer.
2. I'm tank, so I never EVER want to turn my back without a good reason.
3. My alt is a shadow priest. It's a high movement dot class.

i personally keep the turn left and right buttons on my keyboard andwhen i right click my mouse they automatically change to strafe keys that way i can have the best of both worlds... that said while i dont have a full on mmo mouse with like 20 buttons i do happen to have a a logitech performance mx mouse that has 4 side buttons that i bind to keys and assign spells while using shift and ctrl modifiers... i also bind my mouse scroll wheel back and forward with modifiers to spells.... i have bound alt and scroll whyeel to zoom camera

The majority of these comments read like: "You are a bad player because of XXX and you should feel bad". In all honesty, the only time key-turning becomes really inefficient is in pvp, and only if you're playing a 'twitch' class. If you spend the majority of your time on WoW in PVE content doing PVE things, the long-term impact on a person's overall gameplay is completely negligible at BEST.
If we wanted to have an efficiency discussion, I could just as easily argue the merits of being ambidexturous, or using a trackball, or using ESDF movement binds and assigning ability toggles to mouse-wheel scrolling with a shift/alt/ctrl modifier. But I'm not conceited enough to imagine that whatever crazy crap works for me will work for everyone else, and neither should you
If a setup works for someone else? So be it. It's their 15$ a month, they can do whatever the hell they want with it. It's not your job to tell them how to spend it, or why they should feel guilty about the ways in which they spend it. the same applies here.

I am a PvP healer and i hadn't started to keybind until recently, i learned that i needed to when i couldnt click my trink and then bubble fast enough and i died. I pissed my partner off alot. But im having issues because i play on a mac. I had to get a new mouse because my other one died and it is the magic mouse (http://www.apple.com/magicmouse) With the magic mouse it's only one button but if i click to the right i get a right click. Up above you said if i click both buttons at once i will move forward, but i only have one button and it is physically impossible for me to click it at once. If a fellow mac player could help me on how they move with their one click mouse that would be amazing!
