Sounds like you need to make new members fill out a good ol' fashioned guild app. That's how you weed out most of the bads from the get go. If you ask serious questions like "what's your previous raid experience?" "explain why you chose your spec and talents" they'll get the message pretty quick that you mean business. Plus it already weeds out the lamers who think that filling out an app is somehow beneath them. I'll admit there's probably a few good players out there who hold that belief, but 90% of them are horrible, horrible noobs. People who say "lol, WoW isn't a job why do I need to fill out an app?" aren't the types you want in your guild. They couldn't take 30 minutes to answer some simple questions and you're trusting them to raid on a consistent basis? I don't think so.
Plus, you should advertise yourself as a HARDCORE or at the very least semi-hardcore raiding guild then people should get the message that you don't want to just &$%# around and farm the first couple of bosses for months on end.
tl;dr: I think you'd have less "misunderstandings" if people knew what they were getting into from the get go.
