How I learned to stop worrying and love level 70

On our way to the Black Temple, as a lark, I asked if I could bring my level 70 warrior I'd started the week before Cataclysm dropped in order to test the new talent spec and leveling changes. Oh, and because I have a problem. I figured what the heck, I could maybe snag a couple of pieces of gear that would last into the mid-70s if I ever played her again.
Six drops later, I'd locked her XP gain and run Hyjal, Karazhan, ZA and Sunwell on her, and I am probably going to do so again.
The hazy glow of nostalgia
Some of it is undoubtedly nostalgia. The Kara and ZA runs were done with no level 85 characters, in full PuGs with other level 70 players with XP turned off. In fact, it made me a little sad for the first time that the level 70 version of ZA is going away, because we easily did a full timed run with all level-appropriate characters (if admittedly ridiculously well-geared ones). I was surprised to realize that none of the level 70 epic gear originally purchasable via Badges of Justice is available to level 70 characters anymore unless they queue in the DF for random Wrath dungeons. All these items require justice points, and those aren't available in BC era dungeons, not even heroic ones. If you want a Blade of Harbingers at level 70, don't hold your breath.
Honestly, though, I've always thought that Onslaught was the best-looking DPS warrior set. If we had cosmetic set options, I'd always be tanking in Wrath and DPSing in Onslaught. Once I realized I had started to accumulate a pretty solid set of gear for level 70, I realized, why should I level up another 85 warrior? I've got three of those. With there always being a mix of players around willing to run their terrifying juggernauts through old content, why not reap the benefits and put together a solid-looking, powerful set of gear I could hang out forever in?

This used to be my playground
World of Warcraft itself always has to move forward. But while I enjoy new content, I'm also enamored of the older content I had good times running, and I see no reason not to go have fun romping about in those old playgrounds. Some of the art and scripted events in these dungeons remains among the best ever produced in the game. I defy anyone to tell me Karazhan isn't a fantastic-looking instance. Making a pit stop in Magtheridon's Lair is still excellent fun (it might be the best use of a single large room for a raid encounter), and Tempest Keep is still some sumptuous eye candy.
Frankly, though, the highlight of my day was either BT's long run up to Illidan's rooftop chamber, or riding up the slopes of Hyjal and trying to figure out where I was in relation to the level 80 leveling zone. How time has changed you, Hyjal.
It doesn't make me feel bad that I queue up for a random Wrath dungeon and absolutely tear the roof off the sucker while the tanks and healers and other DPS in their heirlooms keep asking me what shoulders those are that I have on. Those are Onslaught Shoulderblades, my friends -- and yes, they do look awesome. It's even possible and fun to queue for old BC heroics, although I admit it's not a very happening scene most of the time. I get a couple a day at most, and most are Magister's Temple cause people still want the riding chicken. Luckily, there are a few excellent drops in there.

A moment in time
In the end, for this particular character, making the choice to freeze her XP and just run the BC content has been the best possible decision. It allows me to revisit some of my favorite content and collect the gear I had (and in some cases wanted but never got), and it gives me some completely selfish, completely self-oriented things to do in World of Warcraft.
At the moment, I'm working on the various BC reputations like Ogri'la and the Shattered Sun Offensive. I'm not trying to maximize my rep gains or feeling at all constrained to get there for the raid; this is just for me, when I have time. Same with the old raids; I go on PuGs when I can, I let friends run me through when they're amenable, and I otherwise just chill out. One more BT run and I should be exalted with the Ashtongue Deathsworn.
I don't know if I'd want to play this way full time, but it's fun as heck.

I'm doing exactly (almost ;)) the same thing as you Rossi. Leveled and freezing one char as lvl 60 and one as 70. Perhaps later I'll do the same with 80, but WOTLK is too close right now. What one can remember is that WoW has 4 different endgames! One doesn't have to lvl to 85 asap on all alts to run the same content 2 or 3 times every week. :)

Strange that you should post about this, for the past few weeks I've been playing my Warrior that I locked at 70. It's been a bit of a side-project for months, running myself through Kara/ZA with my Paladin that's on my other account. It's a fun little side-game, I just wish I had other people who'd consider joining me in doing it. Would be much more fun that way.

You can level cap, but I think the modern Talent Trees and abilities are superior to the original TBC, so you will still be OP

I'm considering clearing Kara as often as possible to re-make my old demon-stalker set. Coolest hunter set in my oppinion, and worth all the kills on Malchazar. Throw in Zul'jin's bow and fist weapon, and I'm the coolest troll around mon!

We've been having this discussion in guild chat lately as I finally got people with keys to Caverns of Time and Netherstorm so we could finish off the guild achievements for those. The people with me when we did them were "Wrath-babies" and so never had the experience of running Shadow Labs for 5 hours and dying on Murmur because we were all too tired to push the right buttons. I never saw the end of Arcatraz until I was level 75 because the only time I'd been in there was to get the Kara key fragment. Then you ran out. I can't remember what that first boss does anymore, void circles maybe, because he's dead in 6 seconds. People want to know what it was like, but they don't necessarily want to give up the new talent trees to go backwards.
My guild runs something in all content every month and did Molten Core last week naked. You wore what dropped, green, blue or purple. Even half-dressed, we cleared the place in an hour which is about the time we clear it fully armored. It's the running from boss to boss that takes the time, not the actual killing of them.
I think a lot of the boss fights were strokes of genius. People love fishing up Lurker and the mechanics of having to toss someone a core to shut down Vash'ir's force field probably means she can't be soloed.
I like where I am in game. I also like the fact I can go back and run earlier content, in different ways. When you've been beating your head on a Cata boss for a couple of weeks, taking people who have never heard of Gruul into his lair reminds us that we play a game for fun.

Ha yeah. I like looking back and my old screenshots and smiling at some of the things that impressed me so back then. Murmur is one of them and I very much remember wiping on him for at least three hours one night. People didn't just drop group back then because you were bound to run into each other again and you cared what people thought of you. So you stuck it out 'til the end or until you were physically incapable. In the end it was insanely gratifying. You felt like you really did it. Not that I'm asking for that again. So much of it was probably that BC was just my first end-game and everything was epic. But its hard to argue that that much effort doesn't make it feel more rewarding.

@Luci
That's the biggest thing I miss. Only seeing people from your own server in BGs and heroics meant people built reputations, and people were much more hesitant to leave a group or otherwise give up.

TBC was personally my favorite expansion thus far. For many of the reasons every has stated. Nagrand was my favorite zone and may very well always be my favorite zone. I will never forget one day in particular where I respecced 4 or 5 times just because I couldnt make up my mind on whether I wanted to PVP or run Heroics I was having so much fun.

all emblem gear is purchasable with JPs and yes, JPs still drop. you can get them through daily random or, if you're doing a heroic, every person needs to be level 70 and they will drop from bosses
Herman Apr 21st 2011 12:14AM
or you can do the daily heroic, and the shattered sun dailies. same place they always were before the RDF spoiled everyone.
Narshe Apr 20th 2011 10:20PM
Why would you feel bad about the lvl 70 version of ZA going away? Theyre only adding a heroic version, not removing the regular version.
Mitawa Apr 20th 2011 11:53PM
I have a friend that always "twinks" at level 70.
She has a hard time turning her experience back on. ^^
Herman Apr 21st 2011 12:12AM
I have a mage at 70, and one of the best things about it, is that even with xp turned off, there are a ton of people in pvp queues, I can play all day with other twinks. Its the most active twink bracket so far.

I think nostalgia and where/who you were really affect what WoW players feel to be the "best time ever". Personally, I loved the WoW the most pre-AQ and remember having such a good time playing. Then I realized that I was a single guy in college with great RL friends, no rent to pay, and all the time to just hang out and play. So basically, what was going on in my personal life really influenced how I felt about WoW. Even with all the polish and great additions to WoW over the years, I still place my single-specced, completely useless in solo questing Dwarf warrior above all others.

How do you stop xp gain???
themightysven Apr 21st 2011 2:04PM
there are NPCs in Stormwind and Orgrimmar (Bestin and Slotz) would will turn off XP for 10 gold
Kaahn Stewart Apr 21st 2011 9:54AM
For those who are looking to get through their 70-80 levels much MUCH faster, just do some PvP queues from 68-70, and get yourself a solid set. A full set of Brutal will last you all the way through 80 as far as questing. I think I replaced one piece of gear through all of NOrthrend, and that was the weapon.
themightysven Apr 21st 2011 2:03PM
On the random queue for BC Heroics:
When my mage hit 70 I was still rocking in outland, so I queue for a BC Heroic and started to fill in my map while waiting. At the time I had only done Hellfire, Terokkar and Nagrand. I completed Explore Outland and the first five quest hubs in Howling Fjord before I finally got Heroic Steamvault. There was a guy in there with a "The Patient" title from just BC heroics, which he clearly totally deserved.

Eventually they'll come to their senses and make the following achievements:
Achievements are not mandatory, yes? So as long as all classes/players have reasonably the same chance to succeed, let's have some fun and encourage people to do content at the appropriate level for which it was designed.
Achievement: Kill all bosses in Molten Core with no-one in the raid over level 60 or wearing ilvl gear over 78
Achievement: Kill all bosses in Blackwing Lair with no-one in the raid over level 60 or wearing ilvl gear over 83
Achievement: Kill all bosses in Ruins of Ahn'Qiraj with no-one in the raid over level 60 or wearing ilvl gear over 74
Achievement: Kill all bosses in Temple of Ahn'Qiraj with no-one in the raid over level 60 or wearing ilvl gear over 88
...for the entire fight etc, etc. TBC. Wrath. Maybe even low dungeons. Needs a way for the raid members and leader to see who is wearing too-high-level gear.
Pro: People get a bit of a pat on the back for defeating raid content at an appropriate character and item level. As most classes are fairly OP while leveling, you can get away with less than 40 people in the raid to defeat Rag/Nef/C'thun. High-level gems and enchants would help make it easier, too. Would be a way to bring the old ZG20 and Naxx40 back via Caverns of Time. For no real additional rewards other than fun if you like stuff like that.
Con: People start crying about mandatory leveling of alts and finding classic/tbc/wrath raiding guilds. Which is a huge organizational hassle. Plus classes are balanced for leveling at breakneck speed, not to have decent class representation for level 60 spec X. High-level gems, enchants and heirlooms could make it too easy. QQ for the grumpy old people about having to repeat this or that content. Hey - it's not mandatory, just an achievement.
