I got all the chocolates, didn't encounter the pet, thought ok, going to buy it now. TWO EGGS LATER, I FOUND THE PET.

Yep. If I can remember almost everything you need can be found in eggs. Best strategy is to count up how many chocolates you need over all (I think it's around 200) before you start buying stuff. Also a couple of the quests are dailies after you complete them once. As always the event seems to start early and also finish early. Last year I thought I had a couple hours to get it on one last toon only to have it end as I was collecting eggs :(
