The Queue: Enjoy some Diablo lore
Who doesn't like themselves some Diablo lore? Give the above a listen; it's got a great pace and theme to it. The entire thing reminds me of these opera shorts I used to see on PBS at a kid, where a lady quickly told the story of an opera with animation going on the in background of the description.
Now, what were we here for, oh yes, The Queue.
Let's Queue.
Sterrin asked:
Lately when someone leaves my guild, the guild log doesn't show a name. It just says "Unknown leaves the guild". This holds true for both of the guilds my toons are in on two different servers in two different factions. Is there another place (the Armory, perhaps?) that shows the comings and goings of guildies?
It's been working like that for a long time -- several years, at least. I'm not entirely sure the mechanics behind it, but I think "Unknown leaves the guild" appears when the person who left doesn't have any more alts in the guild or isn't on your friends list. That my entirely observational hypothesis, which has no backing by Blizzard statements or anything. If someone out there has solid proof of how this works, by all means, do share. I'll update this question.
There is evidence that it also appears if the person deletes his or her character or server transfers, because at that point, the internal character ID (that you don't ever see) can't resolve and the system defaults to displaying that message.
Tim asked:
I just ran the improved Shadowfang Keep last night and saw Godfrey and his goons that have died, what, twice now? Since the group wanted to plow through it could the Queue be gracious enough to let me in on what the "lore/story" is now with the Keep and what we are doing in there with the Forsaken?
Blizzard did not do a very good job here with its storytelling abilities, in my opinion (and the opinions of many). The lore is split between the worgen starting zone and the undead starting zone (even though the story is good). So if you want to see more, make an undead toon and play it through for a bit.
The story is quite great and raises some very interesting questions about Sylvanas and her future intentions. I won't spoil it, though -- spend a weekend playing through, and you won't be disappointed.
Elmo asked:
Where is Bastion of Twilight located lorewise? it clearly doesn't fit in it's instance portal so it must take you to some other dimension or something.
You're right, it doesn't really fit into the instance portal. But there is a suspension of disbelief you still need to have when playing WoW, and I think this is just one of those cases.
In terms of lore, The Bastion of Twilight is the base of operations for all the Twilight Hammer. Cho'gall is there, ruling like the boss he is.

Considering what Cho'gall is hiding in his basement, I can only guess the Bastion is underground. Possibly just below the ground-level questing area.

I always thought the huge gate on top teleported you to the actual citadel, situated miles below underneath the mass of metal tentacles holding the gate in the air.

BoT is in the firelands. The portal is similar to the ones you enter in Hyjal questing and there is magma everywhere.
Cephas Apr 22nd 2011 1:52AM
The portals look similar because they were all made by the Twilight's Hammer, not because they go to the same place.

BoT = The Tardis

That right there made my day.
(3 days till season 6!)
It's bigger on the inside.

I'm convinced that Naxxramas is a TARDIS, and Kel'thuzad is a Time Lord.
Reasons: It's bigger on the inside, and can violate the laws of time (KT's return was explained, but none of the other bosses)
KT has a massive, ornate shoulder/helmet and too great of an opinion of himself. Plus, he's "regenerated" already...we killed him twice according to lore.

My GM says that the first question is because of the toon being deleted
furry Apr 21st 2011 11:47AM
I believe it is when a toon is deleted, server transferred, or name-changed, that it just says "unkown"
dragon_eel Apr 21st 2011 11:53AM
But how come the toon is still listed in the armory?
MattKrotzer Apr 21st 2011 12:04PM
Because the Armory is, in actuality, a very highly-polished turd.
tophimos Apr 21st 2011 12:31PM
It has always shown Unknown there as far as I know, deleted or not.
Also, you can search up your guild on WowProgress and find out the who and when on people joining or dropping guild.
The Dewd Apr 21st 2011 12:49PM
The toon is still on the armory because it probably updates whenever new data is available for a character. If you remove a character from a realm by transfer/deletion/etc there's no new data for toon@realm to update the armory. And we all know how Blizzard feels about purging data. Eventually, after either a cache clear an armory upgrade or whatever, that toon will "disappear". Or if someone rolls a new toon with the same name on that server, that should overwrite the old one on the armory.

I've never seen this error "unknown has left the guild". For me it has always shown up as "so-and-so has left the guild". Even when I knew for a fact that a toon was leaving because it was being deleted (because the player of the toon said in guild chat just before logging out, "brb gonna delete my failock"), it said "so-and-so has left the guild".
delete your interface folder, delete your wtf folder...nah, just kidding. That rarely works, it just takes your mind off the problem as you work on redoing all your addons.

The armory is the slow cousin to the WoW game client. But don't let it fool you. It's a bit of an idiot savant. Even though it's slow to catch on, it has a different view on the world that can provide an entirely different take on the environment than WoW game client can.

The only one of these possibilities I'm absolutely sure of is server transfers. When someone transfers off the server, it doesn't leave a trace in the guild log or anywhere else.
One night I logged in and we had 212 toons in our guild. This caught my attention because when I had logged off two nights earlier, there had been 218. The log showed no changes of any kind, and the last record was still someone who had left a week earlier.
Someone in guild informed me that two of our newer members had changed servers the previous night. They had each had a main and a couple of alts in our guild. Voila! Another Scooby Doo mystery solved.
