Barring force majeure, it looks like
patch 4.1 lands tomorrow, folks. Not only is the
4.1 trailer out, Blizzard has also announced extended maintenance for all realms for Tuesday, April 26,
beginning at 3 a.m. PST and ending at 11 a.m. PST. Expect it to last longer, as patch day maintenance usually does.
While servers are down, check out our
Guide to Patch 4.1, including class analysis, dungeon previews,
UI additions, and more. Stop the machinations of the
Zandalari!
WoW Patch 4.1 is on the PTR, and WoW Insider has all the latest news for you -- from previews of the revamped Zul'Aman and Zul'Gurub to new valor point mechanics and new archaeology items.

There are some nerfs to HC's in the patch notes (twilight drakes in Grim Batol no longer create patches of fire on the ground, the ragezones in Deadmines no longer increase dmg taken, only dmg dealt, and the imps on Karsh Steelbender in BRC no longer creates heat pools when they die, so you won't accidently add stacks on the boss by killing the adds while they're on the tank) and since new gear will be available (epic 353 drops from ZG and ZA) thing's will go even faster and be even easier. And as soon as people start disenchanting those epics into Maelstrom crystals, the price on AH for those will plummet, and make high-end enchants less expensive to make, making things even easier yet.
It might not be as accessible as the end of Wrath was, but it sure is getting there.
On the "downside", since ZG/ZA give 140 Valor points and can be queued for separately from other HC's, there won't be as many players in raid gear in the regular HC's. Perhaps the nerfs are meant to counter that.

Anyone have any idea how big this thing will be? I know the PTR usually has to download the whole build every time, but I'm hoping this won't eat up too much of my bandwidth cap.

Don't take this 100% as the answer to your question.
But the PTR downloader this time was about 4GB larger than the last PTR.
It could mean absolutely nothing - and I'd guess there was some 4.2 content in the patch on the PTR, but it might give you a vague idea.

I don't think 4.1 will be 4GB. 4.0.1, which contained all the data for the rebuilt world, was only 7GB.

I'd be surprised if it was over 100 MB or so. While it may be a bit of an optimistic guess, the new instances and bosses already are in the game and much of the gear already exists in the game files as well. The biggest part of the patch is going to be the new quests added into the game and the 4.2 content that Blizzard will put in before 4.2 even is ready.

I am really glad that I work long-ish shifts at both my jobs tomorrow (go to work at 4 am, and other than a 2 hour break won't be home until 6 pm), so I won't care if the maintenance is extended.
Jonisjalopy Apr 25th 2011 8:46PM
Same.
By the time I get off of work and survive traffic it's almost 6pm. If the servers are still down I just repeat the process tomorrow :D

Will valor points zero out once 4.1 is live?
coraldayton Apr 26th 2011 3:46AM
No, the VPs don't zero out with 4.1. When 4.2 comes out, VPs will be converted to JPs. Tier 11 pieces will be purchased with JPs and Tier 12 pieces will be purchased with VPs.

When will the next expansion come out?

"The Horde is my people. If it be war you bring, then I stand against you."
Am I thinking too hard or Vol'jin is half saying that to the other tribes and half reforcing the position he has regarding Garrosh?
Barren Apr 26th 2011 9:01AM
Just to bring it to someones attention I just checked and yes in fact the loader downloaded something and now the version number has changed to 4.1.

I disagree regarding Rift; while the leveling process is pretty linear the end game is much more refreshing casual friendly then Cata's end game turned out being. Rift also has a unique public class system that pulls the community together during Rift Invasions. Yes there are patches every day but you are only talking about 30 minutes at a time once a day in the mornings. thats 3.3 hours per week which is half the down time that WoW has. There is a hell of a lot more variety for builds then WoW does. Some times I miss Wrath of the Lich King; but when Cata came out I needed to find the closest game I could to give me that smooth gaming experience I felt when raiding in Wrath; I have found that in Rift. Some day if Blizzard decides to bring WoW back down to the difficulty level of the Ulduar days I may consider coming back.
