Two Bosses Enter: Augh and Lockmaw vs. Mograine and Whitemane

That's right, ladies and gentlemen. It's time for our third of four wild cards this season. Whitemane and Mograine make a triumphant return from WoW of old to tackle the dastardly duo from Lost City of the Tol'Vir: Augh and his pet croc Lockmaw.

In last week's matchup, Karsh Steelbender and Forgemaster Throngus went toe-to-toe in what turned out to be quite a tight matchup. Which of them could stand the heat, and which of them couldn't?
Follow along for the details of this week's matchup, as well as discussion on last week's match.
The rules of the ring
- The WoW Insider Ring is considered neutral territory, where both combatants are able to access their usual encounter mechanics and abilities. If you can't visualize it inside the squared circle, visualize it someplace else -- but you must take into consideration all of each bosses' abilities and mechanics.
- Assume that each opponent is intelligent and capable of strategic thinking.
- All of the competitors' abilities, including crowd control and other effects to which bosses are usually immune, work on their opponents (with apologies to considerations of lore on this point).
- Assume that the opponents share similar levels, health pools, and comparative overall damage output.
- Don't get caught up in gameplay mechanics and what actual players might do in each encounter.
- Don't neglect style, story, and scale. Everything is a factor; seeking balance is your goal as a spectator and judge.

Gwaaaaaaaaaaaahhh!!!
Let's be honest: Augh's defining feature is that he's an extra-obnoxious member of a race that could very easily be interpreted as an immensely offensive racial stereotype. He's kind of a jerk! Lockmaw, though? Lockmaw is cool, because crocodiles are cool.
Augh's abilities include: Lockmaw's abilities include: Want to learn more about this duo? Read what other adventurers had to say about the encounter!

Whitemane: Arise, my champion!
Mograine: At your side, my lady.
Whitemane and Mograine were World of Warcraft's original duo of badasses. Their devotion to each other inspired countless players in one way or another, whether it be how they roleplay their characters or simply how they carry themselves in PvE. These two are iconic, and there is no tackling one without the other. Can Sally Whitemane and Renault Mograine topple Augh and Lockmaw to cement their place in Warcraft history?
Oh, and Whitemane's hat totally rules.
Mograine's toolkit includes: And Whitemane's repertoire: If you've never witnessed the righteous fury of Whitemane and Mograine first-hand ... what the hell is wrong with you? Go take a level appropriate character to Scarlet Monastery ASAP!

Last week's competition was a tight one. Forgemaster Throngus knocked off Karsh Steelbender by roughly 5% of the vote, which is certainly one of the closer matchups we've had. Reader Ganatola was Throngus's first major supporter, and this may be the scenario that carried Throngus to his victory:
"Heat feel good," the mighty Ettin thought somewhat intelligently for one of his kind. The blazing air current flowed across Forgemaster Throngus' face, beckoning to him like a fat, slow sheep would to his eye. The Forgemaster lumbered through a great, rocky caverns full of black rocks and the broken bodies of whatever idiots tried to oppose Throngus. It wasn't a matter of Throngus' overall violent nature, no, it was that the Twilight's Hammer were too small for him to see – thus, he merely stepped on them as they stepped in front of him.
Unaware of the slowly approaching monster, the drakonid Karsh Steelbreaker continued applying his armor, fastening it to his bare flesh to create Karsh's dream – complete invulnerability. "Perfection! It is I! And I am it!" the drakonid boasted as the last piece of obsidian armor was seared to his skin. The Forgemaster also walked into the room at that exact moment, unable to take in everything at once: the weird dragon-thing, the shiny lava waterfall, and the dots all over the ground...
"Too much! Too bright!" Throngus wailed, pulling out his encumbering mace in hopes to smash out the bright lights of this terrible room. He walked past the amazed Karsh and swung the mace clean through the lava flow to absolutely no affect other than splash lava across the room and hit an unfortunate gnome mechanic in the face. His short, shrill shriek of pain frightened Throngus. Throngus swung the mace in the direction of the shriek, but found that his mace had struck something even harder than he – Karsh. A feral growl filled the room as Karsh's fury broke.
"Your body will be perfect to test my armaments on, you maniacal idiot!" He brought up his wicked spear and began circling the confused Throngus, who was still figuring out what "armaments" meant. He soon found out. The Ettin loosed a pained yelp as the spear dug deep into his thigh, but retained his instincts and returned the blow with his mace to Karsh's face. The still-confused Throngus nearly cried when his beloved mace failed to even scratch the dragon-thing's armor. A look of pure shock crossed Throngus' face as he remembered the sword he left on the anvil when he left to explore...about a week ago.
"NO! Throngus get whipped if Throngus don't get back and finish!" The frightened Ettin whimpered to Karsh as the drakonid swung again, this time striking the Ettin in the arm. Throngus took a couple more blows from the swift Karsh, but then the Ettin decided that he had enough. "Throngus slice you up!" he yelled as he tossed aside the mace, taking up his beloved swords. A new passion glowed in Throngus eye's, a glow that only appeared in an ettin's eye when it is threatened with it's greatest fear – in Throngus' case, a good whipping.
Throngus rushed the drakonid and jabbed both swords at Karsh, both points managing to impale him. A look of amused surprise crossed Karsh's face, but he showed no pain. Though it did little damage, Throngus paraded about the room, smashing Karsh into just about everything within reach while the drakonid remained impaled. Karsh's incessant laughter only fueled Throngus' anger, an anger growing quickly because the dragon-thing wasn't dying like everything else he touched! Finally, Throngus noticed the lava waterfall again. He moved to it quickly, dragging the dragon-thing across the bumpy ground.
"Congratulations, Ettin! It only took you seven minutes of you parading me around," Karsh boomed as he was thrust under the flow of lava, "and now you have unlocked my full potential! Feel the burn!" Karsh's armor turned bright orange as the obsidian became superheated. The spear swung stabbed into Throngus once again, but a terrible burn remained.
"TOOOOOO HOOOOOTTT!" Throngus screamed, dropping his swords out of pure fright. The Ettin pulled up his massive shield, holding it before him in a death grip. He stood before Karsh, and Karsh stood within the lava flow. Karsh's grin grew wider as he continued to heat up, knowing that the hotter he was, the more powerful we would be. "You not get through defenses!" Throngus yelled to Karsh, more to comfort himself than taunt Karsh. Karsh decided to test the boast regardless.
The molten spear grated off of the shield, a rain of sparks setting fire to the ground below. Throngus had not been moved back a step. Slightly annoyed, Karsh continued to bash Throngus, but he was unable to hurt the Ettin in any way. Karsh was almost bored with hitting the shield when the first arrow struck him in the back, a searing pain felt through the warmth of his armor. The fatal flaw! He was vulnerable when he was so able to destroy! "NO! Not like this!" Karsh begged as faceless arches began loading dozens of flaming arrows into him. Throngus remained behind his shield, Karsh became more vulnerable by the second, and the waves of stinging arrows began taking their toll. Karsh fell to his knees, a look of deathly shock on his face, though a small look of triumph crossed his face before he fell deep into the lava.
"We number in the millions! Your efforts are wasted..." Karsh muttered as the lava flowed over him, concealing the final fate of the drakonid. The archers dispatched to find Throngus walked up to the Ettin, who still had his shield up, his eyes clenched tight. One archer mustered the courage to poke Throngus, that archer jumping back ten feet when Throngus' eye flew open.
He looked around at the vaguely familiar archers, saying, "Dragon-thing! Throngus fight dragon-thing!" One of the archers informed Throngus of what had transpired. "Throngus win!" one head said.
"It would seem," the other head said in Throngus' manliest voice, "that dragon-thing no can stand heat!"
"YEEEEEEEEEEEAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAHHHH!" The archers yelled in agreement.

Remember, Two Bosses Enter matchups are all about substance and style, not gameplay, mechanics, and numbers. Don't base your strategies on player tactics, which opponent has been easiest or most difficult for you personally, or the difficulty of each opponent relative to instance progression. Vote for the spirit of the battle as set forth above. Set aside differences in opponents' health pools, game level, and actual damage output. Absolutely no game mechanics nitpicking!

I have a feeling this one may be a blowout...

A Pygmy with his pet lizard versus a trained paladin and priest of the Scarlet Crusade? No problem.
Hell, they may not make it past Mograine phase 1...
Necromann Apr 25th 2011 9:14PM
I love scarlet monastery, so my vote is obvious.
Biskit333 Apr 25th 2011 9:23PM
Its got to be the Scarlet Monastery duo, if only for the fact that we all have so many fond memories of them. And lets be honest, two of the greatest warriors of the Scarlet Crusade would have no trouble killing a pygmy with attention issues and his six legged lizard.
MusedMoose Apr 25th 2011 9:29PM
I admit, I voted for Augh and Lockmaw just because watching Scarlets die is always fun. ^_^
abartusek1996 Apr 25th 2011 9:33PM
Well of course I'm picking Whitemane..shes ho..I mean both of the duos do great in battle.
abartusek1996 Apr 25th 2011 9:40PM
Whitemane for sure.
Rai Apr 25th 2011 9:49PM
The mighty crocolisk Lockmaw squinted into the distance as the scarlets approa-
Okay, I'm sorry. I can't do it this week. The scarlets have access to powerful paladin abilities, shields and healing. Augh is a pygmy with no sense of direction and while crocolisks are cool, Lockjaw would either end up eating him or just chewing on one of the scarlet's shields, retribution aura whittling down the other crocolisks that smell blood. That's if it'd even work through the shields.
Next week will be back to normal, I promise. This matchup is just too one-sided.
Fletcher Apr 25th 2011 9:56PM
Yeah, I'm looking forward to Ammunae vs. Ashbury. "This chamber will flourish with your life energy!" "Unfortunately for you, I'm already dead."
Rai Apr 25th 2011 9:57PM
It's gonna be a lively debate, that for sure.
*herp derp*
Fletcher Apr 25th 2011 9:52PM
The *interesting* fight will be when these two go up against Ashbury.
Sarducci Apr 25th 2011 10:18PM
I'm with the "augh and Lockmaw don't make it past phase 1" theory.
mibu.work1 Apr 25th 2011 10:49PM
The scarlet duo, easily.
That dragon breath will do little against the shields of Mograne and Whitemane's healing. The scent of blood on whitemane's tabbard will do little as she puts all the little crokalisks to sleep in a mass, while mograne bashes away at the lizard. Eventually, Whitemane will mind-control Auugh, and his whirlwind will make a quick end of the sleeping crocalisks, until Lockmaw is dead and mograne can bash Augh's head in. Easy.

Ozruk just got a new contender for an ultimate victor...
Ganatola Apr 25th 2011 10:36PM
Augh pulls a Leroy Jenkins and charges Morgraine with a predictable outcome.
The End.
Seriously, what more do you need to describe this story?
osdeath Apr 25th 2011 10:48PM
So, let me get this straight - we have a croc who is protecting a treasure and a pygmy who only shows up after the croc dies vs a team of two crusaders, one of which rez's her partner so you have to fight them both at the same time?
This seems like a silly match up. Two humans with thinking brains, one of which is smart enough to rez the other vs a tiny brained creature and a crocodile.
Mal Apr 25th 2011 10:56PM
Ehh, it's kinda hard to come up with a decent scenario considering the HUGE difference in levels and abilities of the two bosses.
I get that we're not supposed to get hung up on that, really, but the only way to balance the fight is to either crank up W&M's abilities and damage to heroic level (although Heroic SM would be glorious, yes). Whitemane and Mograine have a clear advantage if you compare them that way. But which fight gives you more trouble at the appropriate level? W&M is little more than a tank and spank (not counting the mobs in the Cathedral) and L&A is a semi-complex, three-expansions-of-design-improvements-later endgame fight.
There's a reason why heroic DM and SFK needed to have brand new bosses with brand new abilities instead of just buffing vancleef and co.
Apple Apr 26th 2011 12:15AM
There's also a reason why all of the rules of this column exist. If it were based on the difficulty of the encounters for players to complete the whole thing would be moot (see rules 3, 4, and 5).
Sure, Whitemane and Mograine are a tank and spank, but Augh and Lockmaw can't heal, and tanking doesn't work against an intelligent opponent (rule 2). While it's not impossible L&A could win, the tactics a 5-man group would employ in the fight do not matter at all, unless one of the combatants is capable of applying the same tactics with their available skillset.
The only things that matter are the abilities of the combatants and how they compare on a tactical, qualitative level. If your approach is "L&A are harder at 85 than W&M are from 36-45, QED" then you aren't approaching the question the way it was originally posed.
Throm Apr 25th 2011 11:04PM
Honestly?
Lockjaw eats Mograine and Whitemane gets beaten and eaten because whats left of Mograine can't be revived.
Augh does a little victory dance in the background.
Minstrel Apr 25th 2011 11:29PM
"Oh, and Whitemane's hat totally rules."
Absolutely. I made sure to get it on all my female casters.
