Why Can't I Raid? was among my first exposures to the talented Sharm (who I called TaintedLore back then). The video itself was created by Leonarddum. While the auto-tune was a tad thick in this performance, that just mirrors the use of auto-tune in Rihanna's Unfaithful.
The lyrics paint the heartbroken disappointment of a raider who can never quite get a raiding spot. That's the kind of thing that can just crush a player's interest in the game after a while, and Sharm does a good job of illustrating the frustration. While I doubt she intended this parody to be an intense analysis of the game, I can't help but think there are more than a few raid leaders who would benefit by listening to it. Interested in the wide world of machinima? We have new movies every weekday here on WoW Moviewatch! Have suggestions for machinima we ought to feature? Toss us an email at moviewatch@wowinsider.com.
We had some people who were never going to get raid spots and we did sit them down and explain that they were probably never going to raid with us and if they wanted the opportunity to see raiding, it might be best for them to find another guild (back at this time people didn't PuG content). If anything, I liked that we were honest about their opportunities and didn't lead them on.
Not that I'm really jumping in here to defend G0rehowl's one-liner but...
Good god, sometimes I think that if there was one line of reasoning I could stamp out from the world of entertainment, the idea of "Well what have YOU done?" would be it.
I despise this type of defense because frankly, it's just as vacuous as the sound blurbs people put out to attack things. As I said to another poster in one of these columns: I've never made a movie in my life, but that does not and will not ever stop me from saying "Battlefield Earth" sucked a golf ball through a garden hose.
If people want legitimate criticism for their work, they put it to peer-review in a closed environment.
But if you put something ON THE INTERNET, you had damn well better be ready for every Tom, Dick, Harry, and Trolly McTrollington the 42nd to blast you with anything they bloody feel like saying. And yeah, that includes snarky one-liners.
By all means, vote someone like G0rehowl down if you hate his opinion, or the way he said it. You're on THE INTERNET too, and that's your right. But don't leap into this hyper-defensive mode of "I DON'T SEE YOU PUTTING ANY WORK OUT!"
Then you just sound like a cross between "filthy peasants!" and "LEAVE BRITNEY ALONE!"
I admit, I was being snarky in response to snarky. My comment was just as flippant as Gorehowl's. I'm just not a fan of the way the internet is becoming exactly what you describe. Normally I just ignore those comments and keep going. This time it struck me in just the right mood and I shot a little tongue-in-cheek rebuttal. I assume if he can dish it out, he can take a little back.
That internet feeding frenzy attitude to which you allude is precisely what spurred my reaction. Just because most of us know it's going to happen, doesn't make it okay. If you doubt Gorehowl's attitude, just look a few posts lower. He really believes if it's on the internet, it's okay to be rude. I don't think that has to be true.
Yeah, that's about how I felt for a while with my Pally and why I quit for a few months [cata got me back though] Not geared enough to get into anything good, but can't get any gear because can't get into anything.
how can you not get any gear? you get gear from doing regular dungeons and then you can get into heroics. when you have all you need from heroics your good to raid. what do you mean you can't get into anything? if you don't have time for heroics, why would you even be considering raiding?
Emblems from heroics -> raid gear. Gold -> ilvl 264 epics. Heroic gear (blues and ilvl 200 epics) were indeed too little for ICC, but getting raid geared wasn't hard at any point.
Yup, this truly is heartbreaking, both for the eager players who are ready and can never get in, and for the GM's and officers who have to tell those people every single night there isn't a spot. Being an officer myself, I totally understand this saddening frustration.
"The lyrics paint the heartbroken disappointment of a raider who can never quite get a raiding spot. "
The singer says right at the start that she's "all in greens". That's not ready to raid, period, not "never quite getting a spot". That's someone who's too lazy to bother getting the basic gear needed. Sorry, sympathy factor = 0.
"All in greens" is only ready to raid if you mean Cata greens and a Wrath/BC raid.
What Aruhgulah said. It's a very nice song, but if you analyze it... no basis. If you aren't geared and all you do is roll alts instead of working on it... why would any RL take you to a raid?
Auto-tune or not, I love this song and I think Sharm is amazing. Definitely creates emotion inside of me which is the purpose. Great Job Sharm and Leonarddum.
I actually just started raiding a bit in old content, I know we can 5 man a lot of stuff due to being 85, but it's nice to finally see all the content I missed out on. It has been a nice primer to learn boss mechanics, and teamwork. Following instructions and getting a win. Finally got my confidence in my ability to do what needs to be done. I was able to finally see icecrown the last 2 weekends as part of a 25man heroic run.
1st weekend we go through Sindi, in 4 hours, with a group of half noobs like myself. Cuts were made before the run on Arthas and more experienced players added to fill spots left by those who would not use vent or follow orders. I made it in because I did what i was told to do, and made no major screw ups. We wiped approximately 9 times on Arthas. It was still fun. Our Raid leader is a great guy but trying to run people in ICC, with everyone who had ever been in that fight giving orders it became a vent cluster****, for those of us who had studied the tactics and now were following the suggestions of 4 people. We still kept doing our best and we ran out of time to continue. Then came the announcement from the raid leader that the raid would carry over but only with people who had done this on regular mode that needed the light of dawn achievement. The frustration then set in. Does anyone remember doing that raid at 80? How many weeks or months did it take just to down Arthas once you found him? In 3 1/2 hours we had gotten almost through phase 2 on the valkyr, with arthas sitting at 56%. Sure its a lot less effort for us at 85, but its still very frustrating to know for some of us who were doing damn well for never having done it, are being dropped for people who have not been there the whole time nor made any effort on this run. Not going to cry about it as I know I'm a noob raider, and not at the top of my game and was lucky to have gotten in at all. I raid for content purposes, as I'm a BG gal over all. but that still was very frustrating.

I always liked this video :) I think it goes well with yesterday's Officers' Quarters: http://wow.joystiq.com/2011/04/25/officers-quarters-wait-listing-is-the-hardest-part/

Well said, Omegan. It seems readers on this site often use this lofty defense.

Because by the end of LK they wanted you to have better gear then even heroics. Trust me I had the full heroics set

That's how the the internet works bub... seriously what do they teach you kids in school other than the interchangeable nature of c and v apparently.
